I was there once several years ago. I remember the dj played a song which I hadn't heard before and it turned out to be "I'm Leavin" by Lisa Stansfield.
I just returned from South Florida where I learned The Copa in Fort Lauderdale was destroyed last year in a hurricane.
The Copa was my favorite disco and I was really saddened to hear of its' demise. It was my #1 hangout from 1979 - 1982, and for many visits for years thereafter.
Everybody played The Copa BITD. Sylvester, Two Tons O' Fun, Lime, Grace Jones, Evelyn Champagne King, etc. Even Madonna when she only had 3 songs.
Any one else have "Copa" memories? Or know anymore about what happened or if it will rebuild?

I was there Spring Break 1983 and had a wonderful time. I saw Sharon Redd in concert at the Copa, and she was brilliant. She took the stage and proceeded to kick her shoes off. Someone in the audience handed her a bottle of poppers, and she emptied them onto the dance floor. She seemed a little "high" and sang all the classics, "Beat the Street", "In the Name of Love", "Can You Handle It?" and her new song at the time, "Love How You Feel".
I just found your post about the Ft Lauderdale Disco Club the Copa... What a great club.. I also found this like to the Copa http://www.copaboy.com/.
