I've just got an old minidisc collection I made some time ago off of the shelf. Right now I'm groovin' to these sounds.

    Cameo - Word Up
Junior - Mama Used to Say
Raydio - For Those About to Groove (How I loved that groove).
Evelyn King - Love Come Down (ditto above)
Tony Lee - Reach Up (an underground UK disco hit)
Larry Graham? - Sooner or Later
Rose Royce - Rose Royce Express (I can't tell you how much I love this record, especially the drumming - it reaal kicks and you can just tell that they had so much fun making it)
    Harry Thumann - Underwater
Barbara Roy & Ecstacy, Passion and Pain - If You Want Me
Chas Jankel - Glad to Know You (a huge US hit but did almost nothing in the UK. I was about the only jock regularly playing it in my local area)
George Clinton? - Loopzilla (Don't Touch That Radio)
Atomic Dog? - Do Fries Go With That Shake.
    Whodini - Whodini's Magic Wand
Rockers Revenge - Walking On Sunshine
Mike T - Do It Anyway You Wanna

I played the hell out of most of these at the time. The only one that sounds a bit lacklustre now to my ears is the Tony Lee cut. Mind you, I was never that into it originally, but a local record shop picked up on it, released it and there was quite a buzz that built up.

First of all, welcome along to the Board, Quinny!! It’s always nice to see some fellow Brits come along!! I have enjoyed your contributions you have made to the debates about music so far!! And I agree with your comments as well!!

Secondly, you are about the third person that I know who has an MD recorder on this Board, the other being Jussik. If you want to get into trading some music via MDs, then let me know!!

Thirdly, I loved your list to bits!! Just goes to show that good music was alive and well in the Eighties!!

Rose Royce – I truly love that record as well! It’s just the SHEER POWER of that groove that always gets me!! Wow!!

I remember Tony Lee very well, of course. At that time I was living in Tunbridge Wells and that tune was massive there. I’ll have to play it again to see how it sounds to me these days.

But there are some great songs in your list that I loved – Whodini, Larry Graham (massive song), Junior (a truly GREAT Brit disco/funk tune) , Evelyn King, Harry Thumann (haven’t heard that one for years!!), Cameo and George Clinton (DON’T TOUCH THAT DIAL!!!). All massive in my local disco. Reminds me of the time just before I moved up into London. In Tunbridge Wells, I remember I could just pick up the soul pirate stations like Horizon Radio from London where a lot of these would blast out…

Great list!! Great memories!!

    DEAR JAZZ,

Glad you enjoyed the list. I would never swap an MD but could always copy if needed. Trouble is, once a DJ always a DJ, I tend to make chop edits between tracks that (a) because they are on MD leave a lot to be desired and (b) tend to leave off a lot of the tracks playing time.
I've got to say that for me personally, 1981/2 - 1986 were my favourite Disco years as a DJ. There was diversity and lotsa heavy grooves.

Have you ever heard the Mike T tune (with Joe Thomas)? That's just about my idea of Disco heaven Jazzy funk rap

It's amazing!!! The only one I dont like too much is Chas Jankel's track. And the only one that I dont know is the Mike T's track.
The others match perfectly with my taste.

    P.S.
Finally Jazz found somebody with a MD!!!

Quinny, I meant copy music onto blank MDs for each other ... rather than trade...

Best to ignore my good friend Blax!! He's never been the same since the World Cup !!!

Is that Mike T the same song as the People's Choice?

Also, love the Quinny list? Especially the top half up to and including Chas Jankel...

By the way...I am looking for a Rose Royce LP on Epic Records with Best Love on it....anyone?

    DanceMan,
No it wasn't the same tune at all. It featured Joe Thomas and I believe it was on Golden Pyramid records in the States. It came out in 1982 or 3 and clocked in at 118 bpm from memory. A really funky groove, especially the instrumental side, with great sax and percussion break(s).

2.I Love The Nightlife - Alicia Bridges
    3.Dazed & Confused - Led Zeppelin
4.Show and Tell - Al Wilson
    5.More,More,More - Andrea True Connection
6.Riders of The Storm - The Doors
7.Cherish/Maureen/Love Is Stronger Than Pride/Is It A Crime - Sade
    8.Spring Rain - Silvetti
    9.Sun Goddess - Ramsey Lewis
    10.You & I - Black Ivory
    11.Ebony Princess - Jimmy & The Beavers?

it was a nice surprise to see al wilson's "show and tell". "la la la the peace song" was a funky song too. could start something about that particular "style" with johnny bristol, h.b. barnum, al wilson, don't forget the boz scaggs album "slow dancer" too.

and on an earlier list...juniors "mama use to say" which i have started hearing on the radio recently.

    HustleBaby:
Of course by the time Whodini came out, Rap was already almost 3 years old. On good days,I can remember some of the OLD, OLD SCHOOL RAP stuff too. (tongue firmly in cheek) My goodness, some of us Brits must have been hipper than we ever imagined!
