I think the number one reason for the masses is that people wanted to dance and this form of music was popular and used at social events. Keep in mind how popular Motown acts were in the 1960's across an extremely diverse population. This disco music sounded much like that Motown music like the Four Tops, Gladys Knight, ect.
The primary reason I would intially take interest to disco as opposed to rock or pop is that I don't not like squealing electric guitars. So this fit would seem most natural. I'm not into esoteric or political lyrics or fabricated vocal stylings like Rod Stewart. The African American vocal delivery is quite genuine and for somone who does not like a lot of loud, fast music its a natural progression of taste.
