Coming from an experienced jock like Quinny, these comments should be taken serious! Maybe I should have a good listen before purchasing this box.

What exactly do you mean? Is this some 4th take or something? Hope Ben isn't getting the DISKY-fever instead of the Disco fever????

BTW, Quinny, have you ever bought the Ferry Maat's Soulshow compils?

Video: This isn't even a 4th take or something. The Runner is most definitely a Demo version in comparison to the finished 12". If you know the 12", you won't be able to listen to this version.
I've found Disky compilations to be pretty good in the past...maybe I've been lucky with the few that I have.

I thought of buying Ferry Maat's CDs, but there just wasn't enough different stuff on them to really entice me. They're very credible though and do contain the odd track I'd like to have in CD format (but the odd track is NOT enough).

I can't agree with you more, Videoskooter. Quinny is great. I always learn from him. I appreciate your advice, Quinny, although my English is not perfect.

I think the degradation started with volume 3. I was mentioning it earlier in this thread. Tracks made from BAD vinyl and a 10 min unnecessary live track and too many standards as "fillers".

My copy of vol 4 hasn't arrived yet.
OK it's 4 Cd:s and as long as half of the material is good enough it's worth buying, but the trend is it's deteriorating.

Maybe the Grand 12" saga ends here. :icon_confused:

[quote=QUINNY;121647](1) There are too many album versions on what is called Grand 12-inches for chrissakes. If the 12" release was just the album version on a 12", why not include tracks by the bands that were true 12" mixes??? /[quote]

I feared that this was the case when I saw the timings of tracks like Sister Sledge & Mike Theodore; they're the same as the LPs aren't they? How naff.:icon_sad: There's always the sound quality to enjoy I s'pose.:icon_confused:

I shall be looking out for this on itunes only and getting Who's Zooming Who. I have been looking for a CD/digital version of this for years. It came out on itunes in the States last year as part of the dance re-releases but never made it to the UK.

I am intrugued about The Runner. I've been waiting for that album to appear on CD for years but it still doesn't appear. It seems the masters are lost.

Maybe that's the reason and Ben had to pick some substitute take. Then, maybe it was better to choose another track.

    Quinny,
I am sorry to read your obvious disappointment with this set. I guess my initial concerns about the songs and their lengths were valid.
Hopefully your message will get back to Ben. Everybody needs a little kick in the ass sometimes. :icon_cool: In my opinion the the best set based on my collection would have been his second set. I don't have it but plan on buying it sometime later. As for his latest offering, I'll pass.

    Cool Re: GRAND 12" , Vol. 3-Updated: Vol.4 Released!

I've resisted buying Vol. 4 because I have too many of those tracks.

Regarding The Runner, is the 8.13 Moroder mix not available on CD anywhere? I have the blue vinyl 12" and its getting worn out. Freakin' hell it's an amazing record though.

I've got that extra long version too but on white vinyl. It is a fantastic version & gets quite trippy on the instrumental breakdown. I'd love it on CD as the coloured vinyl has a background hiss I find.

Even I (generally a Moroder hater) think this 12" is a freakin' amazing record; that's why I find the demo version contained on Grand 12-inches 4 sooooo disappointing.

The instrumental break and build up is devastating - a dancefloor killer thats for sure.
I think I'll just rip my vinyl.

Finally I had my copy and you're right. This is an unknown version of "The Runner", totally lacking punch. If I would here this on the radio I would think: who made this cover???? Where's that slapping base coming from? Never heard this before!

The rest of the box is cool, specially the Bobby O productions!

I have found that a lot of the Three Degrees songs reissued on CD are ReRecordings done in the 90:s. I have found information about recording sessions in Portugal -93 and some after that. They all sound similar to this version of the runner. Almost as a stripped down demo version. Could this be the result of a studiosession done in the 90,s?

Just got Vol. 4...very disappointed, compared to the others. Me thinks it might be a European vs American thing, as to why I am getting more frustrated as this series continues. I am getting real tired of the more electronic tracks...I want more real, organic disco.

Agreed...the Bobby O stuff has probably never sounded better, but even what he lists as a "12" Version" of "Disco Nights" by GQ is a joke...my 12" white label Arista Disco version is 5:51 and with a much meatier sounding breakdown.

Maybe licensing reasons are to blame, but Ben really needs to plunder the Prelude, Salsoul, and Casablanca vaults.

The sound quality of these sets are generally good...but for song selection, I'm starting to prefer the GetDisconnected comps over these (though I think the mastering on those is TOO COMPRESSED).

I too wondered about that Disco Nights being the 12" version. I have a longer version. I don't have that Liebrand release but when I saw the track listing I was curious.
As for mastering, I mentioned earlier that they sound good though I wonder if they are compressed/dynamically limited. I recently made my own compilation with songs from Vol. 3. I noticed on the program I used for burning there was a lot limiting on the songs I was burning. Graham, if you are reading this, any thoughts?

I can't speak in Ben's name but knowing the man a little bit I think he's more of an 80's lover. He started in 1976 (he's 47) but really got his breakthrough in the early 80's with his mixes for Dutch radio station Veronica. I would be very surprised if he can't get the license for Salsoul recordings since they're putting out so many compilations themselves.

Maybe it's a personal choice by him or maybe it's indeed a copyright problem.
