    George Duke 12"

    Hello everyone,

I have a question for all of you vinyl junkies out there. I recently found a copy of George Duke's "I WANT YOU FOR MYSELF" B/W "PARTY DOWN" PROMO 12" (EPIC RECORDS #AS 681).

This track goes for uber dollars on ebay and I can't figure out why. I listened to it a few times and it doesn't stand out or sound particularly amazing to me. Is there some kind of lure behind it that I'm missing?

    Anyone have any commentary?

    Thanks,
    -yo-i-got-beats-

Hmmmm..... Maybe this is just not your type of song, lol

"I Want U for Myself" is a skating rink classic! That bassline, those horns, that Hook! Man it don't get any better than that! that breakdown in the middle, man when you rolling around the rink, you in the "zone", baby! lol

That track lenght is the same as what is on the Cd album and the his new Essential collection which I'm happy to see a stateside reissue. I bought the import a few years back and was truly amazed and then bought almost all of his Lps. My favorite by him is "No rhyme, no reason" featuring Racheal Ferrel. Most of his 80's catalog on Epic and on Cd is starting to sell for BIG BUCKS!!

I agree with you eddie! No Rhyme, No Reason was a scorcher back in the day, in constant rotation on all the quiet storm shows at the time.:p

its a very rare 12", strangely the finished blue one is harder to find than the white promo. as a recognised loft/ny classic it sells as a collectors piece more than for the music.

Fantastic song! It was from the 1992 Snapshot album which marked a change of direction for him. Leaving Elektra gave him full control over his career as Warner Bros didn't expect for him to keep on doing vocally based crossover hits like it was the case for elektra. Or at least, that's what Duke said in a 1992 Blues & Soul interview. Still, "No Rhyme No Reason" went on to actually being a chart entry.

Eddie if you're not aware, I just recently (like 2 wks. ago....) found this out,

There is an underground club remix of this song!!! I don't know where they're selling it at, I uh, acquired a digital copy from a DJ friend, this track is smokin'!!!

My favourite George Duke track is the instrumental 'Positive Energy' from '82. It sounds like it should be on some cop show like Starsky & Hutch or Kojak. Fab.

There have been a recent reissue of the white label promo, so most of those you see are reissues, while with the commercial blue label you are sure you got the original pressing
