    Neil Diamond's 'Heartlight'

This song has been a favorite of mind for quite some time now. I guess I just like the melody and the sound of the instruments. Anyway, I always assumed that the song was just a great little love song. Then out of the blue, I realized what the lyrics were about!

    Neil Diamond - Heartlight Lyrics

    Come back again
I want you to stay next time
'Cause sometimes the world ain't kind
When people get lost like you and me
    I just made a friend
A friend is someone you need
But now that he had to go away
I still feel the words that he might say

    Turn on your heartlight
Let it shine whereever you go
Let it make a happy glow
For all the world to see

    Turn on your heartlight
In the middle of a young boy's dream
Don't wake me up too soon
Gonna take a ride across the moon
    You and me

    He's lookin' for home
    'Cause everyone needs a place
And home's the most excellent place of all
And I'll be right here if you should call me

    Turn on your heartlight
Let it shine whereever you go
Let it make a happy glow
For all the world to see

    Turn on your heartlight
In the middle of a young boy's dream
Don't wake me up too soon
Gonna take a ride across the moon
    You and me

    Turn on you heartlight now
    Turn on you heartlight now

This song is about ET! LOL! I confirmed it by looking around the internet, and yup, it was inspired by the film. Talk about being a slow learner. :)

This was co-written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager. Too bad it didn't make that Idol's medley!

This is one of my all-time favorite Neil Diamond songs. Like you, I love the melody. Yes, this song should've been one of the songs selected from the Bacharach songbook to be included on "Idol".

I love a good slow song, whether it be soul, pop, even country. While I'm not a fan of Neil Diamond, this is also my favorite song by him, even though I don't have a list of other songs I like by him. :)

Too bad they didn't include 'Heartlight' on the ET DVD. Did he do a music video for the song?

not only do I love this song, it made me gain a whole new appreciation for Burt Bacharach's songs (there are some other fine Bacharach songs on the parent album). I still don't care much for most of Diamond's other records. Next I checked out "Painted from Memory", Bacharach's collaboration with Elvis Costello. Awesome songs that REALLY deserve a better singer.

Bacharach is a great music writer. His Hal David collaborations are great, but his 80s collaborations with Carole Bayer Sager were really great. Arthur's Theme and That's What Friends Are For, both of which were in the Bacharach medley on American Idol's finale, are two other wonderful tracks by those two. They also wrote 'On My Own' which Patti Labelle and Michael McDonald sang.

Dusty Springfield and Dionne Warwick were 2 of the best interpriters of Bacharach songs IMO.
Oops...........apart from Arethas delicious version of 'I say a little prayer'.

I also like the Sergio Mendes & Brass '66 version of 'The Look Of Love'. Isaac Hayes also did some great covers, like 'Walk On By' and 'The Look Of Love'.
