Just hope it is Let's Start The Dance and NOT Let's Start II Dance Again by Bohannon. Otherwise I think I'll write to the guys at Optimum (and every other label that's released the wrong track) and show them the error of their ways.

The 12" 80's Cds have been brilliant. Let's see if they release a few more of '70s stuff, that delves into decent club material.

mhmmm Quinny....... I am one of the greatest world fan of Hamilton Frederick Bohannon, and I sincerely think that the famous re-do of "Let's start the dance" is superior to the original.
I think that the re-do version is one of the most potent floorfillers that I ever knew. Every serious dj should always have it in his bag since it can revolve the dancefloor in a couple of minutes.....
I am a classic disco fan too and of course I love the original (I have 3 vinyl copies of the original promo 12"!!!)

As for the CD it’s OK, all the usual suspects again, although at least you get extended versions.

As for Bohannon, I’ve always quite liked the Francois Kevorkian instrumental mix of “Let’s Start the Dance III”, probably my favourite version next to the original “Let’s Start the Dance” version.

Now your just showing off… but as you’ve mentioned it I do have two (or may be even three!!!) copies of the “Bohannon Disco Symphony”/”Andrea” promo 12" around the place – I think I may be a classic disco fan too!

I think it may be it’s just a phase (II) you’re going through.

Let's Start The Dance is remarkably similar to a track that appeared on an album of his released in 1974. The track was called Keep On Dancin. I'm with Quinny in that the 1979 version is the most superior of all 4!

    Well, I did'n know there was a 1979 version! I have the 1978, 1981 and 1983 versions.

So are they 4?!?! or are you wrong?
Is the fourth version the "Keep on dancing" track (1972)???

Agree with you 100%, but whereas I have Let's Start II Dance Again on CD at least 5 times (and vinyl 2 or 3), I don't have Let's Start The Dance at all on CD (just the 2 copies on vinyl). All my vinyl is (and will remain) in storage, so a CD copy would be nice, especially an extended one.

BTW: Although Let's Start II Dance Again was undoubtedly one of the biggest dancefloor anthems of all time, I enjoy the original 12" from '78 just as much, sometimes even more. It's Caroline Crawford's wailing that really exhilerates me every time.

Quinny: I'm with you on this one. However, I did manage to pick up a CD (can't remember when) on Polygram called "Let's Start The Dance, Volume 1."

There were two volumes. Volume 1 contains the original 1978 version of Let's Start The Dance (5:54). The liner notes go on to say, "Bohannon's Let's Start The Dance has been done several times (at least three times by Hamilton Bohannon himself) but the 1978 original, included here, is still the best. As is the case with most of Bohannon's Best, Let's Start The Dance is pure jam; like other self-descriptive Bohannon hits (Foot Stomping Music), there's little song to speak of here. But you'd have to go to James Brown to find a groove harder than this. The world might not remember the name Carolyn Crawford, who sang the rallying cry of Let's Start The Dance, but her screams are unforgettable. " So I'm listening to the CD now while I write this.

I don't know about a '79 version. Keep On Dancin was I believe from '74 (Bohannon did Stop & Go in '72), and featured the same medley, chords, bridge, and even bass riff as the '78 Let's Start The Dance. As far as I know, the album version was the only mix floating out there until the track was remixed in '81 as Let's Start II Dance Again. I've got a 12" mix that features a Vocal version (i.e. with the rap) on one side, and a Party version (rap mixed out) on the flip. Let's Start The Dance III came out a couple of years later. Bohannon certainly has gotten a lot of mileage out of that track!

Here's a track listing of the Unidisc CD that included the latter two versions and their various remixes:

I have a CD 'Let's Start The Dance' on Polygram and although the liner notes refer to it being the original, it's the Rap version that's included. Did that piss me off.

Mental note to self: I must get Carolyn Crawford's Comin' On Strong out of storage and transfer to CD if I can. Boy, was that track a scorcher too (produced, as it was, by Bohannon)!! Her vocals on it were soooo strong that there's audible clipping distortion on them. Rather let the track down audibly, but the groove is BAAD!!

    Hey Quinny:
The number of my CD is Casablanca 838 810-2 (Polygram). Other tracks are Sugar Pie Guy Part 1 and 2-The Joneses', Casanova Brown-Gloria Gaynor, My First Mistake-The Chi Lites, You Can Get Over-Stephanie Mills, Funkytown-Lipps, Inc., Ain't Nothing Gonna Keep Me From You-Terri DeSario, Take Me Home-Cher, and Flashlight-Parliament. One of those CDs in the cheapie bin I picked up. The Bohannon track doesn't contain in rap in it (well I haven't heard the rap version).

A great compilation. I found this in a cheapie bin years ago too. At the time, I hadn't heard the songs, especially Sugar Pie Guy. Talk about eye openers! Sadly, they stopped at just the Vol.1

If you guys are looking for the Summertime Groove album, with Lets Start The Dance, Me & My Gang, etc.. it's out on CD. It's a euro import. The quality is really good (master tapes).

To answer my own question, so to speak, it is the original 12" version of Let's Start The Dance that's featured in this compilation. Congrats to Optimum for getting it right!

They went on to do a volume two and it is worth seeking out.

You got that right Quinny. I am definitely more interested club material.
By the way, I for one am a little tired of Let's Start The Dance. If they wanna release Bohannon, how about Foot Stompin' Music instead.
