Recording vinyl to mp3 hardware question

Hello,

Im trying to records some vinyl to my computer but I keep getting a loud buzz,hiss...it comes from that little U shaped connector on the back of the tuntable I dont know what its called.

This is my set up to record....

Technics 1200 line-in going into an equalizer that lin-in's to my mac mini.

Im not using a receiver, when I have the turntable hooked up to my stereo there is a littleplace to put this U shaped connector to cancel out the buzz, I was wondering if there is anyway to cancel the buzz with out hooking up a receiver?

The u-shaped connector is the ground wire. And yes, it must be grounded to get rid of the buzz.

BTW, unless the equalizer has a phono stage, you're going to get far too low a signal going into the computer... not to mention a total lack of bass.

Just screw the u shaped connector to the center screw that holds the Face plate to your Power outlet in place, no need to remove it all the way just loosen it up, power outlet box should be grounded, unless you live in a very old house in which case the box may not be grounded.

PS: if you don't connect your Turntable to a phone stage amplifier at the very least you wont get the proper sound reproduction, there is no getting around this with vinyl..

I've never connected my tuntable to an amplifier except my stereo receiver... is there some type of part that can be installed in the turntable or a small amplifier that can be purchsed something that doesnt take up a lot of room and is not expensive??

man, I wrote a long reply and was lost :evil:

use your old amp with the "phono" input or get a new separate phono pre amp, they run from 20 to 100 USD and are small, connect TT to this pre and output to your PC audio card, use software/headphones to cue and monitor recording the best bang (quality) for the buck is the NAD brand, but I'm sure others will do just fine, check Radio Shack they may still carry some, or Google " phono pre" and start there, Amazon has many different models. Here the one I bought a few years back (actually PP1 for 79USD I think )

Ok here is what I did...

Next I need to decide what software to use I have a mac and I was going to try to record with garageband unless someone can recommend a better alternative ?

I run OS-X on a Mac as well and use Bias Peak to record tracks, but you can use the much less expensive Roxio Toast which comes with Spin Doctor for under $100.(US)

Ok I got the pre-amp in the mail today still waiting on the ground wire, but the problem now is that the bass sounds too heavy before it was too flat the pre-amp i bought has no adjustments just a simple line in/line out does anyone know how to correct this?
