Glass Family - Smoke Your Troubles Away

I've come across four different mixes of this track: the Valberst 45 mono mixes (vocal & instr); Earhole 45 stereo; Unidisc CD without the fiddle.

I've got a few questions about this track:

    1. Was it ever released on 12" back in the day?
    2. Is there a stereo mix of the instrumental (which is titled Dance Your Troubles Away on the Valberst 45)?
    3. My copy of the Valberst pressing has these weird 1 second pauses throughout the song. I thought it was the record skipping but its not. These pauses are found on the vocal and instrumental sides. I was wondering if this was on all pressings, or did I just get a bad one? I've never come across such a defect before.

Ah DF ...so many issues buzzing about your head ...... just follow the song title's advice ....and you'll too become more relaxed .... and all those concerns will melt away ... ............... no more worries about 1 second pauses throughout the song any longer ... 8) ................ and you'll just be left to enjoy the music ... 8)................................................ ....................................

Lol, Remicks! I'll just smoke those troubles away.

Incidentally, the Unidisc CD features a mix with a sax only playing throughout whereas the 45 had a sax and fiddle. I wonder where that mix came from. Smoke wasn't released on any LP as far as I can tell.

I'd still like to know if the Valberst pressing was a bad one on every copy or was it just my copy that had those weird pauses every few minutes?

Remicks, I think you will like this track. It's kind of undergroundish, and gritty sounding. Amazon might have a sound sample from the best of CD that Hot Productions put out. But the version to get is the non-CD, 45 mix with the cool country fiddle on it. It's such a unique sounding dance tune.

Hey Disco Funk go to the source! Jim Callon could tell you. He autographed the 45 you speak of for me not too long ago. He owns and runs JDC records in Hermosa Beach CA. Yes that JDC. I have the previlage of visiting his warehouse and turning up some great finds now and then. He has great stories of performing back in the day. Also have had the previladge of him coming to our Disco events. He's a great guy and he was there!!!

Thanks Vinyllife, I'll look into it! Which version did you buy? The Earhole or the Valberst? If the latter, did you find it had the same defect?

Re: Glass Family - Smoke Your Troubles Away

Hey Disco Funk, Just obtained a copy of the Glass Family 45 on a Valberst USA pressing.
It has an A side Smoke...at 4' 57" (Disco Mix), and Dance your troubles away at 4.55 on the B side, which is more of an instrumental on my first listen......
BOTH sides have the weird dropout - but the A side has more- I counted about 4/5 silences...the B side only had 1/2 .
Did you speak to Jim Callon...or find out if this is a pressing problem/dodgy discs or meant to happen (some sort of Disco Editing?)
    Cheers

I didn't bother with calling Mr Callon. I doubt he'd be thrilled about someone calling to complain to him about some bad editing job done over 30 years ago! He probably got an earful back then about it. Not only that, why is the single in mono?

The follow up release on Earhole doesn't have the same problems, but sadly, it doesn't have the instrumental mix.

The sound quality of my mint Earhole pressing is very poor - if you play it thru a big sound system you can't seem to get enough volume out of it without distortion. Still, it epitomises the kind of disco students worldwide adore., there's NO way you can go wrong with it. And the fiddle is so cute.

Yes, I really like the fiddle too! Originally, I had the greatest hits CD, which has a saxophone instead of a fiddle, so hearing the fiddle on the 45 really made me enjoy this song a whole lot more.

FINALLY , (can this be ? SIX YEARS ! later !!!) I have this record .... the Earhole 45 version . And yes DF you are right . I do like this song , one of my favorites to emerge this year. It is odd .... kind of a hillbilly chug-along . Those gravelly , nasally female vocals --- comparable to ...???? ( Macy Gray??)

    marijuana is my name

?? Why it is not on youtube ??

    Wanna mix it into :
