I wanted to start a thread

    here

    to suggest
Funk and Soul Disco tunes for the Top 500

I am not asking nobody to reveal their lists here
just to reveal their funk and soul disco gems

I guess you can call this thread an extension to my Top100 Black Disco thread

    Suggestions are welcome
I am ofcourse hoping on rediscovering some lost motown and atlantic gems

    "Disco........
Thats where the happy people go
    And there just dancin along
    to a quality song
    Down at the Discooooo"

    Real Disco comes from Funk

I suggest the rare group TTF and the 12" from 81 "Mighty fine"

    A timeless funk gem

Or why not "Get up" with One way from 81.

    Cheers

I keep forgetting to mention BROTHERS JOHNSON - "I'LL BE GOOD TO YA". I used to love, love, LOVE this song. And wasn't that Syretta in the background?

    Great little funky piece.

Does "It Aint Reggae But It's Funky" by Instant Funk count as true funk...i would think so....
    and SOUL.......
How about anything from the Whispers
"Bingo" - then jump to the 80s material especially, "Rock Steady" from 1986
Ben E. King's best from 1980 "Music Trance" and "If you Are Looking for a Nite of Fun" (Atlantic)
    Gayle Adams, "Stretchin Out" (Prelude)
Midnite Star's "Wet Your Whistle" (Elektra)
    Carl Carlton's "She's A Bad Mama Jama"
Leon Haywood's "I'm Out to Catch"

    to name a few......

I will try to stick to the pre-disco days. Soul and funk dance tunes:

First of all, by a long shot, my funk favorite song of all time:

"Papa don't take no mess" by James Brown... like 16 minutes, for me it could go on for hours!

    Some others:
    -"What's going on" (Marvin Gaye)
    -"Trouble man" (Marvin Gaye)
-"Here I am (come and take me)" (Al Green)
-"Take me to the river" (Al Green)
-"Funky stuff pt. 1&2" (Kool & The Gang)
-"Rumpfunkstiltskin" (not exactly sure about the spelling) (Parliament)
    -"Agony of defeet" (Parliament)
    -"Rock with me" (Aretha Franklin)
    -"Wild and free" (Curtis Mayfield)
    -"Theme from Shaft" (Isaac Hayes)
-"Can't turn you loose" (Otis Redding)
-"Stand" (Sly & The Family Stone)
-"Nutbush city limits" (Ike & Tina)
-"Sex machine", "Funky side of town", "The payback" (J.B.)
-"Doin' it to death" (The JB's)
    -"Celebrate" (Earth, Wind & Fire)
    -"R-E-S-P-E-C-T" (Aretha)

    Some of my favorites.

Marky mentioned D-Train and Nano mentioned Sly/Family Stone and "Trouble Man" (I still play this!) by Marvin Gaye.

My choice for a funky D-Train would be "Tryin' To Get Over". The instrumental rocks! For Sly and Family, I'd go with "Sing A Simple Song", although I'd probably play "I Want to Take You Higher".

Anyone remember Sly's 'Little Sister', "You're the One" or "Somebody's Watchin' You"?
