Barrabás influenced Cerrone??!!
Some days ago I buyed (for the first time) a LP by the Spanish group Barrabás (of which I only knew their early-Eighties hit "On the road again"). The disc had no cover and its centerpiece feature no album title, but I checked AMG and it's ˇSOLTAD A BARRABAS! (1974).
Three surprises (at least for me):
1) The band sound great and the A-side is first class funky soul for its time.
2) Their "Hi Jack" sounds way better for me than Herbie Mann's (theirs is the original version).
3) The second song of the album, called "Susie Wong", sound a lot like Cerrone's "Love in C Minor". Basically, the bass track (which carries the melody during the body of the song) is practically the same. As you already know, this bassline was repeated with little variations in many Cerrone tracks, also in some of Don Ray (which Cerrone produced) and even in a song by German rock group Supermax. But all these songs came after "Love in C Minor". And "Susie Wong" is from 1974!
Casuality or cause? Anyone else know this track?
And what about other albums by Barrabás? Should I look for anything by them? They usually are found at bargain prices.
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)
