Hmm, right now it's a toss up for me. The violins and a well arranged string section particularly in early disco was a must.
That said whether it's early or late disco, there has to be a high hat. By the way, thanks to the person here that taught me that. Prior to being a member here I had no clue what that was :)

For me, its the drums. I've heard a lot of disco tunes where the bass took a back seat to the other instruments. A good bass line will add to the danceability to a track, but without a good drum track, you can't have a disco song.

Just think about it, would a dance song still work if you mixed out the bass? Yes. But if you mixed out the drums and left in the bass, you got no backbone.

This is what gives a song his power, or NOT.

    1)bass guitar
    2)drums and percussion
    3)piano and/or keyboard
    4)strings
    5)brass

    In that order, IMHO!

Are you guys serious?!! You're saying that a disco song is still a disco song if it has no drums?! :)

Or do you mean it doesn't matter what drum pattern is played, as long as you have a good bassline, its still a disco song?

    Don't forget the synths !!

Though not required .... most disco gets its ultimate umph from the string and horn sections ....

But really it all just depends on the particular song

    It's The .....

    The BASS is the Boss.
But all the rhythm section (bass-drums-guitar) is THE disco beat

Even with my love for basslines, I have to give first place to the drums. A simple reason: they're the only thing you hear on most instrumental breaks, a part of the track that came to be the standard when disco artists started to record thinking in disco DJs.

Now, if "drum" means bass drum, hi-hat, congas or a synthesizer.... that's up to you fellas (smirk)
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

The 4 on the floor drum is essential.

I have heard many tracks that would be so in need of a great re-mix because the kick drum is lousy.

When I say remix ; I don't mean an update but a nice clean mix of the original tracks.

Just a punchy drum track with a kick-@ss bass player ; with a layer of strings...
