    Gasoline prices.

Oil is at about $71 (€57) a barrel today. I pay $3.11 (€2.49) a gallon for 87-octane gasoline on Staten Island. That's a good price for NYC.

That works out to approx: $0.82 / liter or €0.66 / liter.

For those who don't know, Staten Island is the smallest and most auto-dependent of NYC's five boroughs. The subways do not reach here. Nearly everyone owns at least one car. Most homes have a driveway or garage. We get to our jobs in Manhattan by express buses or the Staten Island ferry.

I live in Hollywood--work in Sherman Oaks; buy gas in SO cuz it's cheaper.

Last night I filled up my Mazda (have to use premium); 10.467 gallons @ 3.339 = $34.95

that would probably be 10 cents more a gallon in Hollywood....

we need to BOYCOTT; start with Exxon/Mobil; Old Fat Bastard CEO Lee Raymond gave himself a $400 million retirement package...START WITH THEM.

Boycotting isn't the answer. Driving less is. The suburban model of sprawling neighbourhoods is an urban planning disaster; we just haven't realized it yet.

Do you HAVE to use premium? Sometimes the owner's manual recomends premium but you can get by with mid-grade 89 octane gasoline.

This is true of most North American cities. And this is the real problem: designing communities that are tied to a finite resource, one that often comes from hostile nations.

There's 4.54 litres to a gallon in Europe. What is the conversion from U.S. gallons to the rest of the world?

Of the $6.74 per gallon quoted above, around 75% is tax levied by the government.

I'm ultra glad I have a diesel car that returns an average of 54 mpg, no matter how I drive it (stop start, fast motorway, whatever). If I really try, I can get at least 64 mpg out of it in the summer months.

I'm basing conversions on the US Gallon: 1 U.S. gallon = 3.785 liters. Isn't gasoline sold by the liter all over Europe?

The Imperial gallon is 4.546 litres. The U.S. gallon is 3.785 litres.

    Here in Canada, we're paying $1.05 - 1.13/ litre....equivalent to $3.97 - $4.27 / US gallon.

I'm ultra ultra glad I have a motorbike....I do 100 miles a week on it and it costs c. £12.00 ($21) every two weeks to fill up. 8) 8)

(I also have a Landrover Discovery V8 but hardly ever use it so it costs £80 ($145) to fill up - probably every 2 months)

On this link you can find the Belgian prices. Gasoline and Diesel are very pricey at this moment.

It's a big cut in my budget these days. 6 trucks, 4 powergroups and daily transport.

Plus the heating for house and trailer Cost a lot of bucks to keep all those things moving :(

I agree Marky. Gas prices are nutz! I filled up in West Hills a little while ago. $72.00 to fill my truck. $3.49 p gal. There isn't a very good public transportation system here in LA. I work in Arcadia and live in San Gabriel and that isn't very far, but is 4 busses away. It's nuts!

    Re: Gasoline prices.

Gasoline prices have fallen since this thread started. My local gas station is today charging $2.839/gallon (€2.234/ gal, €0.59/liter) for 87-octane gasoline.

More a function of other factors. People are driving less and combining trips to save gasoline. Prices usually drop after Labor Day. There have been election years in which the price was going up.

Expensive gasoline must kill you guys in California. I need a car where I live but all my trips are short. Two shopping centers with supermarkets are less than ¼ mile from my house. I could walk to one if I wanted to but don't want to dodge 6 lanes of traffic.

I just saw it at a local Mobil station for 2.55 a gallon (regular), it was 2.65 a few days ago in the same place.
