What Disco artist would you like to perform for you at a private party?
For me it would have to be Anita Baker....I get goose bumps just listeneing to some of her vast arsenal of songs.
:D
Don't know if he still tours:
Isaac Hayes, backed by a full orchestra, yeah, why not, maybe the Love Unlimited Orchestra as a tribute to Barry!!!!
8) Candi Staton 8)
and Gwen McCrae if I still have money ...
Honestly, I would love to have a 1 hour concert featuring Chante' Moore singing all the songs from her debut album Precious. Anything else she ever did was moot and no I do NOT want to hear Chante's got a man. It would have to be complete with George Duke on a Grand piano, maybe Harvey Mason on drums, and Randy Bowland on guitar.
For the poster who mentioned Anita Baker, try Chante' Moore's Precious Lp from 1992 on MCA. It is now a budget title and worth every penny. Disregard her crossover fluff.
I'd have a hard time considering Anita Baker or Chante Moore to be disco artists...I'd probably choose Voyage, Change, the Peter Jacques Band, the Ritchie Family or maybe Debbie Jacobs.
Sorry Ol'Skinflint I do like soul much more than disco and get the 2 confused. Most disco artists did other things and I also like to reflect on them. Actually the soul crowd considers her work with Chapter 8 to be insignificant disco with the exception of "I just want to be your girl." Many music critics say they cringed when they heard a few uptempo cuts from 1983's Songstress.
Strictly disco speaking: I'd go for A Taste of Honey. I'd like to see a girl's chops on guitar. But I do want to end it with "Suikiyaki" and yes it is a love song albeit a very sad one.
Of course it's not possible now, but to see the original Chic with Nile and Bernard would be amazing. I never got to see them live - and they are one of the few disco acts that would benefit from a live performance, that is, they would I'm sure sound as good or better than their recorded works.
Or EWF, just to have a solo by Verdine White.
Excellent choices all...and I would add Chubby, Butch and Pooch Tavares, :D
This topic occurred to me this morning when I was listening to MISS LINDA CLIFFORD; it was her 2002 cover of Sharon Ridley's CHANGIN' that I was reviewing and on one version , Miss Linda was allowed to talk or rap as only she could do...this led me to think how much fun she would be to have at a private party--where she could take her time to just"dish the dirt" over the vamping beat of her band. Also, Marlena Shaw could be her opeing act--since Marlena was another great talker/rapper (BEFORE THAT TERM BECAME TOXIC)...her version of "Yu Ma/ Go Away Little Boy" is peerless.
(oops..I typed "Yo Ma"..too many RAP songs I guess....)
Then again, I guess I gotta pay MISS MILLIE JACKSON to perform too---she set the standard--but I have fewer fave Millie songs....."All the Way Lover" would be at the top of my list.
Do ya think I could afford Linda/Marlena & Millie????![]()
Coïncidence: last days I listen much to a track of an old tape that is 1 hot live funkpiece. The female singer is dissing Linda Clifford and talking about the gay liberation movement that has taken over Hollywood.
Could this be Millie Jackson???? The lyrics that return: "Give it up goddamn...."
I must have Grace Jones, with Tyra Banks, Kylie Minoque, Edwige Fenech and Uma Thurman doing backups. I'm not quite sure what Uma's or Edwige's singing would sound like but hey, an off key voice never hurted, it's the overall package that counts. And that would be THE package that Fab Five! After nibbling of antipasti, the curtains would part and to everyone's suprprise there they'd be, all in Issey Miyake, shining and shimmering and launching directly into happy birthday, dear Jussi, happy birthday to yo-uuuu! "Do Or Die" would follow, and then a slow, hot "Mas Que Nada", during which I'd probably hyperventilate and pass out.
I hate to sound like a conformist but it would be Donna Summer. She is fun and still sounds the same today as she did 30 years ago. The Tina Turner of disco - never ages.
