7" vs. 12" - which one you prefered? [ keep it cle

There wasn't much choice early on (1974-1975) concerning playing a 7" single versus a 12" disco single. But as time progressed, there was options to do one or the other (besides dynamic range on 12").

When it came down to playing short versions or longer ones for dance floor traffic and attention span, which did you prefer in the early years - or later years?

I prefer the album version particularily aimed at the African American market as opposed to the clubs. Personally, I can't stand 45's especially if their split in half with the second half on side b.
The later 12" I found to be quite dubby like the Mac Band's "Roses are red" or Windjammer's "Tossing and Turning". One great 12" is Stephanie Mills "Whatcha gonna do with my lovin".

Here's my general rule: If the 12" includes additional music, then that's the preferrable mix. If its a remix or adds fake percussion like a number of early 80's cuts, then its not worth the 7 minutes of airplay.

On the radio and when making tapes .... I liked using the 45's . They slipped cued so easily ...and so easy to handle.... thumb curled thru the big center hole .
Eddie : A large part of the fun of DJing was mixing the A and B sides of a two parter .... or even moreso if the B side was an instrumental with which to extend the A side in various ways ....

In clubs ... I liked the way the 12" fit the entire turntable and much easier to cue at particular points deeper in the song ....

Currently I'm building up my 45 collection of disco songs I only had on 12". I find the editing fascinating ....
