Based on sheer emotion, melody, range, talent, and the ablility of the song to lyrically take you places, these are the songs. There are a few darkhorses.

    1)Rick James+Teena Marie-Fire and Desire
    2)O'jays-Stairway to heaven
    3)Spinner/Phil Perry-Love don't love nobody
    4)Blue Magic-Chasing rainbows
5)Marvin Gaye-Just to keep you satisfied
    6)The Deele-Two occasions
    7)Dramatics-Be my girl
    8)Dj Rodgers-Say you love me
    9)The Dells-Stay in my corner
10)Sam Cooke-A change is gonna come
    11)Aretha Franklin-Ain't no way
    12)Labelle-Isn't it a shame
13)Al Green-I'm still in love with you
    14)Angela Bofill-I try
    15)Dells-I touched a dream
    16)Spinners-It's a shame
17)Jennifer Evette Holiday-I'm telling you, I'm not going
    18)Phyllis Hyman-The answer is you
    19)Temptations-Firefly
    20)O'jays/New Birth-Wildflower

There's probably 200 more, but these are the most gut-wrenching!
I would love to have somebody review this list because these 20 songs are the most challenging and emotional.

    Qdearl-You have a great list!!!

Actually in the initial running, I thought of Phyllis Hyman's "No one can love you more" and Delfonics "I gave to you".

I thought about Black Ivory and could not decide between the aforementioned "You and I" or "Don't turn around".

Excellent picks with Enchantment's, Lenny Williams (which I forgot and should have been there), and Bloodstone.

My favorite darkhorse is DJ Rodgers and apparently yours was Kalideoscope's "Thank you" which I definitely like but can not find on CD.
And the Lakeside track I am not familiar with. I may have it and if I do I must play it. I really enjoyed "Bullseye" which was very melodic.

P.S. I see your from Jersey and I must state that NY radio is terrible of late. Too much talk in the morning and afternoon. The "Quiet Storm" and "Kissing after dark" are derived from mere playlists where half of those core songs we mentioned in our posts are rarely, rarely played. Every other song is a midtempo Usher and Destiny Child clone.

    Love song

Ashford & Simpson "It seems to hang on"
Gladys Knight "When you need somebody"
    Teddy P "Love TKO"
SOS Band "Tell me if you still care"
Anita Baker "will you be mine" (and just about every ballad she has done)

Just a couple things here, but far too many to mention from artists & bands like:
    Change
    Luther Vandross
    Atlantic Starr
    Jackie Moore
    William De Vaughn
    Light of the World
    Paulinho Da Costa
    etc etc :D :D

    Eddie,
1st thanks for the compliment! 8)
    your list was impressive also!
And you are so correct about NY radio! I don't even listen to any of the "quiet storm" shows much. They weren't always like this, during the late 80's early 90's there was sooo much more variety to what they played, You could hear Black Ivory, Miki Howard, George Duke, Aretha Franklin, Pat Methany, Hall & Oates, The Deele, One Way, the Bee Gees all in the same hour, on the same station, lol.

I also was thinking the same thing regarding Black Ivory, lol then rationalized that "You & I" was longer, so it was a better choice!

And outside of any people I know personally, no one seems to have heard of Kaliedascope outside of the tri state area, lol. I don't think that song will ever turn up on a CD, trying to find it on vinyl is a nightmare, I have what's "left" of the 45 (I played it so much the vinyl is now white....) though I did get a friend to make me a copy of a CD someone made for him with it on there. 8)

Most people in Jersey remember the AM station WNJR where all these songs would have been on constant rotation, I was introduced to cuts by the likes of the Fuzz(like an open door. love u for all seasons) The Nights (Country Girl) 14 Karat Soul (say u want me too) Ponderosa Twins (Bound) and so many others when I was growing up, I miss those days..... :(

"Bullseye" is definitely one of my fav Lakeside songs, there is also the cut "Real Love" that is HOT! You'll find "I Can't get you out of my Head" on the flip side of Fantastic Voyage 12" or 45 and I think it's either on the 1st or 2nd LP

A few friends recently got together and we held an impromptu "King of Slow Jams" competition, lol (1cd, your best picks, audience judged) I lost :( So my friend Mike has stolen my "unofficial" crown, until next year.......lol

P.S. the song that won the audience for him was......"Is This the End" - New Edition :-?

Hey Paul that's a pretty good list. You're thinking of Keith Washington with Kissing You and Barbara Lewis with Baby I'm yours. I like it when somebody throws something in from another era which adds a little spice to the flavor.

Someone in a previous post asked me if "It's a shame" is really a love songs and I would have to say yes. It's lyrics describe the feelings of someone disgruntled and abused but he still loves her. "Love don't love nobody" and "End of the Road" are also love songs but they are about the hardships of breaking-up.

What I like about the 60's love songs or Motown in general is that one tempo was not dominant here in the states. And songs like "It's a shame" and almost anything by the Four Tops have that 4/4 pre-disco feel which makes it an even more relevant song on this forum.

    Thanks eddie.
My opinion of It's A Shame is it just misses the mark as a love song for me for the reasons you described. I like the song and have loved The Spinners since day one.
By the way I really prefer the live version of "Love don't love nobody."

    To add to my list:

    Chaka Khan - Everlasting Love
Al Green - Let's Stay Together
    New Birth - Dream Merchant
    Atlantic Starr - Losing You

ITS A SHAME may not be the best song to have cued up during a snuggle session ........

    some of the lyrics :

Why do you use me, try to confuse me.
How can you stand, to be so cruel?
Why don't you free me, from this prison.
Where I serve my time, as your fool.

    Verse 4:

Got to be a shame, sha-ame.
The way you mess around with your man.
    Ohhh, it's a shame, sha-ame.
    The way you hurt me!

Written by Stevie Wonder in response to his break up from Syreeta Wright .......

Fully agreed that its not to be played at weddings and making out. But it does belong on the Quiet Storm despite being a tad 4/4. The falsetto gives me goosebumps and the song has a climatic build. I do see your point though-not a CUDDLE song.

Oh, and I'll also add Keith Sweat's Make Last Forever, the extended version. I was biased against him because he wore me out with all that begging he did in his songs. Several years away from his music, I can now come out of the closet :D and admit to really liking this song. It belongs with the other classics I listed.

Yeah, a constant barrage of Keith Sweat is liable to put you in a coma, but he's one of the most consistant R&B artists of his time, I have at least 6 of his releases and they always have at least 3 or 4 memorable cuts on them. He's probably one of the last "new" artists to make songs that might actually stand the test of time, as opposed to all this disposable assembly line music being released today(and forgotten by tonight....);-)

And you can add these to my list.....

All 'bout Love & Lover's Holiday - Earth Wind & Fire
Why Have I Lost You (2nd version) & Sparkle - Cameo
In These Changing Times - The Four Tops
Soulmates - Q.T. Hush (duet w/ Teena Marie)

Keith Sweat's debut Make it last forever debut and sophomore set called I'll give all my love to you were both rock solid with a slight edge to his debut. However his best track IMO is from his second set. The gut wrenching ballad "Just one of them thangs" with Gerald Levert yelling and moaning throughout the song. It was a real throwback to his father"s singing (Eddie Levert) in the O'jays "Stairway to heaven". What really impresses me with "Just one of them thangs" is the vocodor and how soulful Gerald really is in that broken-down oddly constructed bridge.
