Hi
I went to see Marlena at the Jazz Cafe and was completely blown away. I knew she was good but I didn't expect her to be THAT good. Her voice was amazing, her repartee and sense of humour were outstanding. Every wannabe 'singer' should be made go see her and see how it's really done! Sadly though she seemed to have difficulty walking...I hope it's just a temporary thing.
Highlight of the evening was 'Go away little Boy'...everyone should see her sing this live..uplifting and funny at the same time. Close second was 'California Soul' though unfortunately there was nothing from 'Take a Bite'. Although she's moved far from disco I was hoping she might have done 'Haven't we been in love before'.
Betty Lavette is playing there in May....I'm thinking about going but has anyone ever seen her live ?

Quelle surprise. Artists constantly refuse to admit that they had any part in the disco movement. How tiresome n'est pas? :-? It was the same story whan I saw Roy Ayers; did he play 'Sweet Tears' or ' Dont Stop The Feeling'? Did he heck as like!
Don't be too surprised that Ms. Shaw didn't sing any cuts from "Take A Bite." Even when the album started to get popular, she didn't promote it. When we saw her post show at the bar of this little club, we boldly approached and talked to her. She seemed to appreciate the "love" we were showering on her (especially since the audience turnout was on the small side) and we were able to chat a little about the music. We mentioned that "Touch Me In The Morning" was breaking out as a big hit at Trocadero and she might consider doing something at Troc to promote the album.
It took her about a year or two (long after the song had peaked) when Marlena finally started making apppearances at the clubs.
Anyway, glad to see she still has the magic when she's on stage. Now that she's touring the rest of the world, I don't see her touring the U.S. very much anymore. :(
