    Greatest Girl Groups?

(Bernie: I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this topic, so feel free to move it to Trivia if you think that's more appropriate.)

June Pointer's passing got me thinking about girl groups, and which were my favorites. I recall that a VH1 show from several years back--a show that featured four celebrity guests (the likes of Leif Garrett and such!) who discussed music and created Top 3 lists--made me crazy with its choice for greatest girl group: Destiny's Child, I think. Or maybe the Bangles; I don't remember for sure.

In any case, wrong wrong wrong. Is there any doubt that the Supremes were the greatest girl group ever??! Without the Supremes there could never have been a Destiny's Child!

So who are your choices for Greatest Girl Groups? Mine are:

    1.) The Supremes

    2.) Ponter Sisters

    3.) Bananarama

Yeah, I know I'll catch a lot of crap for my No. 3 choice. But based on the number of their CDs and records that I have and the enjoyment I've gotten from so many of their songs, that's my choice and I'm sticking to it.

I was a little too young to fully appreciate some of the other early girl groups like the Shirelles and such (and I guess we don't want to go as far back as the Andrews Sisters, etc.--or do we?).

Heart would have made my list if not for its male members (band members, that is! ), and I guess there are arguments to be made for the Three Degrees, First Choice, the Go-Gos and others. Maybe Pink Lady? :D

    OK, your turn...

I'd like to add the one group of female singers who never cut a record of their own, but whose voices are unmistakeable on every Philly record they sang on:

The Sweethearts of Sigma - Evette Benton, Barbara Ingram, and Carla Benson.

    Disco Funk

I was waiting for it !!! :D 8) 8) . I'm with you on the SOSs ..... their voices sweeten so many disco / Philly songs .

I think First Choice have the tightest smoothest blend of voices .

I'm also very partial to Honey Cone :
lovin' you is like sittin' on a time bomb ... waitin' for the hurt to come ....

    And The Emotions
we... hold the key .... to the world ....

I agree with TLC remicks. I'm not the biggest hip-hop fan but this group stands out to me.

    even though I agree

that Diana Ross and the Supremes would rank as the number 1 girl group of all time (I STILL play their songs regularly), and Martha and the Vandellas and the Ritchie Family numbers 2 and 3 respectively as my own personal favorites, their producers and writers deserve as much credit as they do for their success (did you know that Diana Ross once called "Where Did Our Love Go?" a piece of 'crap' (before it hit, of course). I've checked out girl groups like Vixen, the Donnas, the Bangles, Klymaxx and others, but either the songs, the musicianship, the vocals or some combination thereof leaves me a bit less than impressed.

I think First Choice are one of the absolute best - perfect blend of voices, strong lead, excellent complimentary music.

I also absolutely love Stargard. So funky, not the typical "nice girl" vocal group.

    I recently re-discovered them & can't believe I wasn't more into them back in the 70s.

And, nothing beats the combination of Martha Wash & Izora Rhodes - Two Tons were great!

Are Inner Life classed as a girl group, 'cos i really like 'em! I agree with many others mentioned previously; other personal faves are First Choice, The Jones Girls & Bananarama (more hi-nrg/pop I s'pose but they are fabulous aren't they?).

    fun topic

this is tough, but i'll give it a shot.........

    70s:

Supremes (with or without Ms Ross)

First Choice (amazing body of work)

Three Degrees (not as consistent, but still swell)

Sister Sledge (if only for Love Don't You Go Through No Changes On Me)

Pointer Sisters (if only for Betcha Got A Chick On The Side)

    80s:

Bananarama (amazing body of work from a group so often dismissed as disposable)

Klymaxx (and the incomparable Bernadette Cooper)

Pointer Sisters (talk about inconsistency - but RIP Baby Sister June)

The Flirts (Menudo with a uterus, but 10 cents a dance is a great album)

Expose (expecting some grief for this, but great singles)

    90s and beyond

    TLC (RIP Dead Eye)

En Vogue (Wow, they're the new Supremes only they don't hate each other - oh wait, never mind)

The Sugababes (if trends continue, they will be all-stars within the decade - great GREAT GREAT singles)

    Girls Aloud (see above)

    Beyonce and Co..........

The 00's-I'm racking my brain and cannot think of one decent girl group.
