What's up everyone? Great night @ the ringside this last Friday as Larry Holmes had a post-fight celebration following his win the weekend before against Butterbean. Nice crowd, good food and great spirits. With that I covered a whole spectrum of classics from the '70's and '80's crossing genres from disco, funk, soul and club. Here are just a few of the songs I played this past Friday:

    Back Stabbers - The O'jays
Don't leave me this way - Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes featuring Teddy Pendergrass
Bertha Butt Boogie - The Jimmy Castor Bunch
    Rigor Mortis - Cameo
Don't wanna lose your love - The Emotions
    First time around - Skyy
    Make that move - Shalamar
    Walk on by - D-Train
All night thing - The Invisible Man's band
Treat her like a lady - The Temptations

to name a few. On the mellow side I played:

Going in circles - The Friends of Distinction
Loves Holiday - Earth, Wind & Fire
    Love's calling - Zingara
    Tomorrow - The Brothers Johnson
The look in your eyes (live) - Maze featuring Frankie Beverly

All 'n' all, a great fun night to be had by all who were in attendance. Hope these bring back some positive memories for y'all.

    Easy,

Well, Sammy, the usual excellent list! And I thought I’d try and beat Blax to it , today!!

Pick of the bunch for me is The Invisible Man’s Band – All Night Thing. Not very well known in England, as far as I can remember, but I gather there was quite a buzz on that one in the US (from reading past messages)

You can never go wrong with Philadelphia International, can you? Back Stabbers – possibly my favourite O’Jays track, and enjoying a welcome renaissance in the form of Angie Stone! I have probably played that Harold Melvin track to death, but I still love it!

I bet Blax will love Skyy and “First Time Around”!! That record was certainly very popular amongst the Jazz Pilgrims - I loved the way the rhythm keeps stopping and starting… Good one!

To save me hunting around – which LP was that Cameo track from?

All the other tracks are great as well! D-Train, Shalamar, Tempations – you’ve got me humming them already!!

The only track I cannot recall(of the uptempo stuff) is the one by the Jimmy Castor Bunch …

Any thoughts on the next “challenge”??

As you have chosen the basis for the first round, and me the second round, perhaps it is up to Blax to decide the basis for Round Three?? How about it, Blax, meu amigo?

    Sammy--

Friends of Distinction put out some very good music in the late 60's-early 70's. It seems that everyone only remembers them for "Grazing In The Grass", but I actually like their 1970 hit "Love Or Let Me Be Lonely" more. "Going In Circles" was a good song; my mom still has the 45's to all of their songs.

As much as I liked Thelma Houston's rendition of "Don't Leave Me This Way", Teddy's version had a lot more "force" to it, musically and vocally.

"All Night Thing" by Invisible Man's Band is another good song; that came off of "The Last Party" CD. The mixing on that CD could've been better, but that song was one of the standouts.

Sammy, do you mix the songs you play or do you play them in their entirety?

The reason I asked is Harold Melvin's "Don't Leave Me This Way" has a major beat fluctuation.

    Dear Sammy,

Certainly it was a great night!!!

The only song that I dont know is (like Jazz) the Jimmy Castor's song.

Skyy's song is a wonderful funk piece, Jazz is right when he said that I would like it.

"Make That Move" is my Shalamar fave song!! You can check this on the Paul's "Best Of..." topics.

Cameo's "Rigor Mortis" it's a serious funky song!!! You know what I think about Cameo, isnt it? LOVE THEM!!
(Jazz, this song is from "Cardiac Arrest" album - 1977)

Invisible Man's Band - I love this song, but I never could see this band.

    D'Train..........what can I say? Marvelous!!

    Temptations......ditto!

Sammy, this time will be tough beat you.......I think.

    Peace

I recall ONE of Jimmy Castor Bunch's tracks being popular with one of my mates from the Jazz Pilgrims - Andy, who was the REAL jazz fusion expert, and I am sure I have heard Greg Edwards play this record on Jazz FM.

Looks like I need to dig around a bit to see if I can locate the track .... I will keep you posted

Go to go ...Time to have my nappy (diaper) changed !!!

Well everyone, nice to see the positive responses to this weeks happy hour list. I must say I have just as much fun playing these songs for a group of people who enjoy them as much as I do. Now to address some of the responses. Robbie, as you stated The Friends of Distinction have alot more great music other than 'Grazing in the grass'. Happy to hear your mom still has her 45's because I thought I was the only one.
Nrgbeat, in response to your question, sometimes I do mix the songs I play. It all depends if there are people dancing at the time. See I'm playing during happy hour 5-9PM, thus alot of people are just getting off work and coming to drink and mingle with each other before the night truly begins so the dancing usually doesn't happen till at least 8PM. However, whenever anyone steps to the dancefloor during my set, no matter what time it is, I'm in mix mode. Now to my good friends Jazz and Blax. As always you guys are knowledgeable when it comes to good music, which doesn't surprise me. Jazz, you were right when you thought The Invisible Man's Band's 'All night thing' was a huge record in the states. Classic indeed! Here's a little trivia on The Invisible Man's Band, they were originally The Five Stairsteps of 'Ooh child' fame from the early '70's. A family group that grew up and changed their name and format to fit the times. Blax, thanks for giving Jazz the info on Cameo, I took a half day yesterday to go to Philadelphia and just got a chance to post this morning. I will issue my next challenge on my next post. Thanks again for the feedback.

    Blaxman and Jazz:

For our continuing saga, I thought we could do the following; Go through the alphabet, starting with 'A' and we each list five songs from artists that begin with the letter at hand. For example:

    Are you single - Aurra
    It's you - Afterbach
    Love and desire - Arpeggio
Do it good - A taste of honey
    Way out - Steve Arrington

Now that I've hit you guys first, it is your turn to respond with five tracks from artists that begin with the letter 'A'. After you've each responded with a round of 'A', then we move on to 'B' and so on. Are you guys up to the challenge? Let me see what you come up with? By the way, this is open to anyone who would like to come and get some. However, my two buddies from Brazil and England you know we have an on-going battle that needs to be settled. Tell me what you think fellas. I await your response, with my guard up that is.

By the way, I would love to get my hands on a 'Treat her like a lady' 12" as all I have is the LP version. I've never come across one yet. I love this song so an extended version would be nice.

Wow, Sammy - you seem to be up and about very early today!!

Was the 12" of the Temptations "Treat Her Like A Lady" markedly different from the LP version? I did see it recently in a second-hand shop somewhere, but exactly where I can't recall...

BTW, I have just seen your round 3 format for the challenge. I'm champing at the bit ready to go !!

Like the format for Round 3, Sammy!
I reckon that with 12 days to go till your next gig at the Larry Holmes Ccenter, we might just manage to avoid the "Q"s !!

Nice choice of trax to start with - especially Steve Arrington and Aurra.
Seriously good dance music! Play 'em loud!!!

I was gonna pick Arpeggio but it's too late!!

Notice that I am nice and polite for the first round!!

Here is my list of five songs - and, beware, I'm playing around with the musical styles. Hopefully, this list will provide some good memories!!!

    1. Dear Limmertz - Azymuth (Laid back Brazilian jazz - my favourite record for the Autumn!)
    2. Little Baby - Patti Austin (my favourite track from her from around 1974 - absolutely essential soul music!!)
    3. You Got The Floor - Arthur Adams (with THAT sax solo!!!)
    4. Am I The Same Girl? - Barbara Acklin (I know it's 1969 but how many times have I danced to that in a London funk club? Bet that's got you humming the tune!!! )

and my killer track ...who else could I pick but my ALL-TIME MUSICAL HERO, Roy Ayers|!!!

    But which track?

You Send Me - Roy Ayers (Nice memories with that one!!)

I hope you enjoy the list as much as I did in compiling it!!

Like the list my man; Nice variety of music. Especially like 'You send me' a fave slow jam of mine. I'm curious to see the 'A' list Blax is going to come up with before I come back with the 'B's. Be on the lookout.

    Gentlemen,

I love your lists!! My fave song in Sammy's list are: Aurra's and Afterbach's tracks.

Arpeggio's........hmmmmmm...I dont know, it sounds a little "strange" to my ears (I'm very polite today, huh?)

Jazz list: I like Patti Austin's track and Azimuth's (of course).
The other tracks, I simply dont know!!
Including that slow jam by Roy Ayers.
Anyway, thanx for not include the "Doo Bee Doo" song. Whew!

    My list is the following:

    Circles - Atlantic Starr
Dancing In Outter Space - Atmosfear
Rolling With The Punches - ADC Band (suggestive, huh?)
Tom The Pepper - Act One

Geez, this is a tough job....oh, yes...to finish my list:

    Phases - Cannonball Adderley

Hey guys, that alphabetic rule is really hard!! I spended a lot of time to post my list. Anyway, I hope you like it.

    Peace

Well Blax, it may have taken you a little time, however, you came through like a thoroughbred. I must admit, I like the Atlantic Starr track. Strangely enough they did not cross my mind even though I played 'Touch a four leaf clover' over the weekend. I like the funk infusion with the ADC Band too. Then you went to Cannonball Adderly, I see I've got my work cut out for me. So without further delay, here's my comeback list using the letter 'B':

    Dazz - Brick
    Happy people - Brass Construction
Say you love me girl - Breakwater
    Too tough - Angela Bofill

and if these four weren't enough to finish you, then I'll hit you with:

On the beat - The B,B&Q Band

Ha, can you guys deal with that? Not sure if you can. I tell you, my problem is not finding five songs or artists, but to decide what five to go with. :???:

Well done, Blax. A great choice.

Particularly impressed by two of my firm favourites which regularly get worn out on a Friday night – Atlantic Starr and Atmosfear! I also thought about choosing the ADC Band – glad that somebody else did!!

And Sammy – there are a hell of a lot of “B”s to choose from – and yours is out of the top drawer – as always! Brick, Breakwater, Brass C, BBQ Band – 4 trax that I love.

So it’s my turn … what to choose?

Tom Browne – What’s Goin’ On
Donald Byrd – Love’s So Far Away (could have been all of them!!)
David Benoit – Love Is Like A Samba
    George Benson – The Ghetto

And the killer cut… one I haven’t played for ages.
When I get mean, as you know, I always go for 1977!

Gary Bartz – Music Is My Sanctuary

    THAT’LL DO NICELY!!

Poor old Blax, whilst he’s busy catching up on the “B”s, Sammy and I , I guess, will already be working on the “C”s !!

    Take care!!

Sammy, of course you dont have problem to choose the tracks of your list. You are the FIRST to do it.

    Jazz is the second.

    And I am the last!!!

Let me see what I can do with the songs that you left to me.

    Let's go:

B.T. Express - Do It Till Satisfied
Blackbyrds - Lonelies For Your Love
Banda Black Rio - Miss Cheryl
    Kurtis Blow - The Breaks

    And to smash you,

    Bar-Kays - Hit And Run

As you can see, I hit you (hard).....and now I must run. As fast as I could!!

Let me start by saying, nice challenges gentleman. Jazz, I like the infusion you always give with the Jazz flavor. Some nice ones too; Tom Browne, love him especially my favorite 'Thighs High'. I knew you were coming with Donald Byrd so I left him alone. Gary Bartz, wow, haven't played him in years. Blax, you came with some gems too. I like the way you threw in 'The Breaks', took me back to my college days and you know how I feel about B.T. and The Blackbyrds so right on time. Now, Blax made a valid point in as much as I always get to go first. So I suggest we rotate. In other words, the next round Blax starts off followed by Jazz then myself. Then when we get to the 'D's Jazz can go first and so on. This way the battle is fair and the true warrior will step to the forefront, me!

Well, Blax, as the professor, I think you have just graduated!!

I love Kurtis Blow and "The Breaks". Interestingly enough, my favourite version is the "Go-go" Instrumental version - do you know that one? BT Express - if I hadn't been in a jazz mood, I may well have gone for that. Blackbyrds - you picked a track I don't know... Gotta look for that one

But your last group - The Bar-Kays - who were they again??

So,it's back to the Blaxcave for your "C"s ...

With your rota, Sammy, (FIX!! ), it appears that on the "Q"s AND the "Z"s, you will be first, Blax second and me last!! Better start planning now ..

I'm reserving Q - "The Voice Of Q" and Zulema and Zapp and Frank Zappa [he MUST have made a disco record

    Dear jazz_pilgrim!
Certainly even FRANK ZAPPA did a disco-record
called "Dancin´Fool" and I love this thing,
because the lyrics are more anti-disco. Try
to combine this stuff with Ian Dury, Lene
    Lovich, David Bowie´s "DJ"...also Marianne
    Faithfull´s "Broken English" and M.
Then you create a complete strange NewWave-
    DiscoSound.
