Barry White fans: Try Dave Crawfords "Millionaire"

    *****

If you, like me , think Barry White and Gene Page took disco /soul to a much higher, ultimate place , one all unto its own ....if you think the blending of Isaac Hayes styled wah wahs with soothing yet unrelenting strings a la the Love Unlimited Orchestra is a listening experience somewhere near nirvana ........ If you, like me, have been hungering for even just one more of those luscious, sweeping LUO compositions.....
Well, I want to acquaint you with something :
Here's a tune you ought to check out ....

On Dave Crawford 's HERE AM I album (1977) , he closes out with a song called MILLIONIARE .

It is supersweet . This is not just some flimsy poor man's substitute either. This is imitation born of unlimited love....
or Love Unlimited , if you prefer .......

It certainly does have a Barry White tinge to it. I prefer the version Crawford cut with The Mighty Clouds of Joy on the Kickin' album.

If you want to check out stuff that sounds close to if not exactly like the Love Unlimited Orchestra, because the backing musicians are the same, check out Hang On In There Baby by Johnny Bristol, and that Gene Page LP 'Hot City'. Gene Page also produced a few Stanley Turrentine albums, and they use the LUO rhythm section (e.g. Ed Greene on drums; Ray Parker and Melvin Wah Wah Ragin on guitars, etc...) too.

I'd only argue that "tinge" doesn't fully describe the close resemblance .... This to me sounds like an homage ...

I want to take a moment to thank you Disco Funk .... in this last year or so .... I've finally allowed myself to revisit an era that was a great part of my life .... and I'm getting a big kick out of sorting thru my music, adding to it , re-relistening and rediscovering.

And you have really been helpful in educating me about various things ..... pointing out the relationships of certain artists and projects ... the musicians involved .... on and on. I find all this fascinating .

This is so different from during the day . Back then, I didn't really give a rats ass if Wah Wah Ragin was on a song .... if Tom Mouton mixed it ..... or if it was on Casablanca. All I had time to do was approach a stack of unheard records ..... give a song a spin ... well, not even that .... drop the needle on it here and there ... and if that song didn't jump out at me .... it was on to the next ....

Quite different from what I'm doing now . ... listening from a very different perspective ... much more leisurely .... and most importantly --- I 'm not determining if the particular song I'm listening to is going to fit in with my current playlist or not . Quite a different approach ....

And now suddenly ( yet slowly ) there are so many times I'm realizing .... " so that's why I like that particular song" .... or " so that's who's voice is in the background" ... or "so that's the instrument that's carrying this song " ...... on and on ....
    Most enjoyable

And now I'm currently enthralled by one of many I've recently uncovered .... MILLIONARE by Dave Crawford. When I first played it , the song , or the lyrics rather, seemd familiar to me .... so I was just assuming that back then , in 1977 , .... I'd heard it a little.
Then , leave it to you to point out the song is on a Mighty Clouds Of Joy album . That 's where I've heard it !!!
Thanks ! This is exactly the kind of tip I appreciate from you .
I can't wait to dig it out and compare the two ! :)

Glad to be of help. I guess I approach music as a bit of a scientist. I analyze it, know what sounds and musicians I like, and then pursue the songs based on that criteria. That's why I'm such a huge fan of the Philly Sound - because I find that they guys from that city consistently churned out first class dance and soul music.

Like six degrees of Kevin Bacon! :)

Being able to analyze music and know who plays in what way, and what producers uses what sound certainly helps in identifying unknown songs. At least, that's what I've found. But it also adds to the excitement of coming across another record featuring a favorite group of musicians. Even if I haven't heard the record, I can get an idea of what it will probably sound like.

I wasn't around during the disco era, so perhaps my appreciation of it as someone on the outside looking in might have influenced my desire to dig deeper into the workings of the old songs, learning more about the people who made the music, and how they influenced the disco sound as a whole. I know that sounds like a whole lot of b.s., but I wonder if I was a DJ back in that day if I'd care really about who was the drummer, guitarist, mixer, etc... Possibly not.

Cool! I'm glad you're able to find as much pleasure in listening to and analyzing music as I've been doing.

No problem. I really like the Mighty Clouds of Joy version because the vocals are much better. Plus Earl Young's drums are crisper and louder in the mix. It sounds like Crawford used the same backing track, but modified it slightly for his version by adding on other instruments. Enjoy!
