Jussi, I noticed a review on French amazon that made mention of a documentary on French TV last Christmas about the same subject. Have you seen this, too? It's called Les Années Palace.
The book is called ”Le Palace – Remember” and it's by Jean Rouzaud and Guy Marineau ( Hoebeke press) . Le Palace was a Studio 54 with genuine style, artistic vision and a sense of the baroque and the theatrical, as opposed to just being a mecca or past-it celebs acting like snots under expensive lightning effects. The book illustrates the legendary masquerades regularily presented by the club like The Venetian Ball and other sumptously staged theme soireés attended by the likes of Paloma Picasso, Andy Warhol and Amanda Lear, as well as masses of fun loving Parisians of all kinds - no ugly scenes of rejection, picking and choosing at those doors. You get to see flyers, posters, designs of the interior, pictures of the djs, record sleeves, and page after page of outlandishly dressed revellers. Exotic scenemakers like Mercedes Rubirosa and Farida (who at one point appeared on a Yello record) plus global luminaries such as Grace Jones, Divine, Jean Paul Gaultier and even Roland Barthes are pictured posing and laughing. Well, Barthes is actually seen staring at something off frame but that's what you'd expect from the philosopher. There's lots of risque outfits and nudity. Magnifique totally essential stuff, but why is it all only in black & white?
