i am heading to Europe starting this Thursday and would love to know as to good record stores in the cities i mentioned, especially those with cheap dusty bins full of 1980s r&b and club music...i am especially looking for the following...

CoolNotes -- your love is taking over (1986)
Kadenza: the 1982 album on PRT and the 1984 one on Calibre(???)

thanks...with well tidings and kind regards,

    kelvy

    Some suggestions for London:

    1. Find Berwick Street in Soho - it runs south off Oxford Street (east end). There is a good choice of second hand record shops in this street - I go there often ... Then go east on Oxford Street, turn left(north) into hanoverr Street - there are some shops in this street

    2. Take a tube to Notting Hill and go to Record & Tape Exchange etc in the area..

    3. One of the biggest 2nd hand shops is Beanos in Croydon, South London (East Croydon is 20 min away by train from Victoria or London Bridge)(my part of town). Beanos is tucked away behind Surrey Street market at the junction with Church Hill.

When U arrive, get an A-Z map book, and you will have no trouble finding all of these

    Happy hunting!

    Kelvy,
    in Paris try those:

    - Samad Records: Rue Saint Martin (near to Centre Pompidou). Ask Samad and tell him you're my friend, he's got the best behind the shop...
    - Crocodisc: 40, Rue de l'Ecole
Those two are the best but bring with you a lot of €

If you are in Paris on Sunday or Monday try the Marchè aux Puces: Porte de Clignancourt, there's a big market where you'll find everything, but pay attention to the wallet.

    in Rome just go to:
    - Metropolis Rock: via Cavour, about 60000 records in stock, mostly Eurodisco, but pay attention, there's a lot of garbage.

Kelvy, good trip, see you in Rome...

another good spot in Paris is "Chez Youri". it's on a small street called "Rue D'Argout" in the "Les Halles" area, not far from Samad.

At Port de Clignancourt, when you go towards the market (follow the crowd !) from the metro, pass under the motorway bridge, and you will have 3/4 ways of going into the
market, take the most left one (that runs alongside the motorway) walk
straight until you find 2 or 3 stands.
They mostly sell new R&B, H.Hop, some (good) house and a few funk/disco
things (@ Momo's place, a nice guy with Glasses), you can ask for other
places there, there are a few.
In general you don't find that many good, old records, but there are much
more things to look around as well.

In Amsterdam, one place to go is De Platenkoning (The King Of Records)

Also, check out "Concerto" on the Utrechtsestraat (try and pronounce that!). This is very close to the Rembrandtplein. They sell 2nd hand vinyl and CD's.

    Concerto BV
    Utrechtsestr 52-60, 1017VP Amsterdam

    Fax: 020 - 6278084

Here is a link to Dutch search engine "Ilse" with a link to all record stores listed in Amsterdam. Have fun! Note: copy/paste the link, don't just click it. Use the '>>>' at the bottom to view more pages.

Probably not worth your time are the markets such as Albert Cuyp (unless you are into ethnic food/fresh produce/cheap rip-off name brand apparel), or Waterloop Plein (junk yard sale/antiques/2nd hand clothes). But you can always give the latter one a scan - merchandise changes on a daily basis.

In London, try also the market at Camden Lock and the shops around this area. I found some nice gems there when I lived in London many moons ago! But definitely check the other addresses - I used to spend most of a Sunday there and found great stuff.

Kelvy, I have also posted a reply in Jussik's report on London, recommending that you go down to Brighton (on the coast) for a day - less than an hour by train from Victoria and the record shops are within one minute's walk from the station!! Full details are in Jussik's thread ...

If you have the time, I would DEFINITELY recommend Brighton!!!! IMHO, better than London ...

Back in '91 my girlfriend and I went to England for two weeks. Since she had been there before she insisted that we also go to Brighton for a day. Well, what a day it was-a record convention was going on!!! Didn't even know it till we passed by the convention center and I begged her to go inside. She agreed and we both spent about two hours. Found a copy of the Disconet remix of Lay All Your Love and Prince's Crystal Ball bootleg LP. Wasn't aware of the other used shops in the area, but I did find plenty in London at Music and Video Exchange. Must go back one day.
