I've always liked Formula 1. Attended the 1976 Monaco Grand Prix - front row seat at Ste. Devote. Spent 5 days there. Jimmyz at the Monte Carlo Sporting Club was spinnin' Barry WHite when I walked in. Place was packed. Had a ball and did I get F-U-C-K-E-D UP!

    Niki Lauda won.

Watch "Grand Prix" Frankenheimer's 1966 Formula 1 epic, it's still the biggest thrill I've ever gotten in the movies.

It's shaping up to be one of the most exciting seasons for ages - moving the Melbourne Grand Prix to now was the work of genius!! Much cooler condistion leads to greater unpredictability hence the race we saw! I feel sorry for Button though - he sacrificed points so that he could get a new engine without penalty for the next race. Now moving to Europe it should really 'hot' up!

Seems like Schumacher isn't too happy the way the season is developping coz' Ferrari is already building a new car for him which will enter the race at Imola/Italy.

I think if Schumi has a failure like last year he won't be on the starting grid in 2007 anymore!

    Re: The BIG F1 Topic!

Tuesday July 11, Frankenheimer's "Grand Prix" is being released as a two disc Special Edition DVD. "Grand Prix" is the biggest thrill I have ever gotten in the movies. I know, I've said it all before. It's an incredible time capsule of Formula 1 racing in the mid '60s. All of the races take place on the OLD European tracks: The original Monaco circuit, Zandvoort, Brands Hatch, Clermont Ferrand, the REAL Spa-Francorchamps (9 miles of public roads through the Ardennes), and Monza including the banking, which I believe is steeper than Daytona. The banking was built for a combined Formula 1 - USAC race in 1961(?) and not used again until reopened for Frankenheimer to film on. For the roots of Bernie Ecclestone's Formula 1 watch "Grand Prix" it will give you a deeper understanding of the modern version.

Discoman, thx for the tip. I've been waiting for that DVD release for many years now. That one will get a special place in my closet, next to Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" :-)

Same here. When I was a child my dad took me to see the 70mm version of Grand Prix and the molecules in my brain changed for good. Those split screen images, the surfaces of the cars and the yellow interior of the bar near the beginning of the film made me a cinephile for life.

    Re: The BIG F1 Topic!

It made me a Formula 1 fan for life.:-D As a kid I would read the sports car magazines ("Road & Track") for it's reports on the European races (Rob Walker and Henry Manney) and was already a fan when I saw "Grand Prix". Well now...that movie just completely scrambled my brains because it was the first time I saw and heard my heroes as they really were. I've watched countless races on TeeVee since - even went to Monaco for the '76 race. But after all of these years the event I remember most was watching poor Bandini's crash on ABC's "Wide World of Sports". I've never gotten those images out of my mind...
