1978
*****
Ah, the ending of another summer .... and Billboard's R&B chart still reflects the tunes that were playing from our cars' rolled down windows on those agreeably warm evenings .... amongst them the many disco artists that were getting radio play at the moment .
Here's a review of some of them and their positions on Billboard's Soul chart that week :
#4 ----- Donna Summer
#13 --- O'Jays
#18 --- Kool & the Gang
#20 --- Isley Bros
#28 --- Barry White
#35 --- Crown Heights Affair
#40 --- Tavares
#59 --- Brass Construction
#67 --- Carl Carlton
#82 --- The Temptations
#87 --- Enchantment
#95 --- Fatback Band
SO .... the question is ..... It's the summer's end we're thinking back on here .... September 4th 's the date .....
..... but , from what year ???:-?
???

1978

1978 ---- A great summer with some great disco .... 8)

*****
1982

Another vote here for 1976.
ok remicks, i got it. you want me to pick a year out of the two i said. i 'll say 1976.
*****
no famdam .... just me editing myself ... nothing directed at you ! :D
But I will say this , since I'm here
.... of the years now guessed ....
1976 , 1977 and 1982 ...one of them is correct ...
and don't forget ... I have a reputation for being a sly puss !!! :P :P

still want to say 1976. i believe they charted that summer. i don't think it was 77 because the temptations left motown that year, but 82 could be possible because of their reunion album.

Would it change your mind famdam if I mentioned that on this same chart, Aretha Franklin was far above the rest here mentioned .... sitting pretty at #1 ??? :roll:Originally Written by famdam

Aretha Franklin did have a #1 for 5 weeks in 1976 for Giving something him something he can feel. Not sure of the weeks though.

OK.
But then there's this:
September 4th and Aretha Franklin is at #1 on the soul chart . 8)
Meanwhile also sitting pretty at #1 that same week ..... but over on the disco chart :
Yaz .....

Howard Johnson
Gap Band
Odyssey
Rick James

Yes, Remicks sly you are! Definitely a great summer that year. I was a dj at a club on the jersey shore during the summers of 1980-1985. What a great time that was!

Anybody that could hold a gig for six years straight had to have been damn good ! 8)
What kind of club was it ? Please , tell more !! :D

unfortunately the first year it started out as a fad country western bar due to the release of Urban Cowboy. I orginally got hired as a everything girl(cocktail waitress, bartender, carding at the door). The owner told and manager told me they had bigger plans for me. By mid-june they were not happy with the other girl dj they hired. one night i walked into work and the next thing i got a crash course with the turn tables and the rest was history. the first year the my first three sets were country/western in between the bands sets. The fourth set was oldies, sixth motown and tsop and the final set was all the best disco and dance tunes. Thank God the second year they changed the format and it became strictly dance(disco, tsop and motown). I swore if I had to listen to any more country for 9 hours(8pm-5am), I would lose my mind. don't get me wrong I'm greatful it got me my start, but i am by no means a fan of country. I grew up part of my life in Philly. Came from a family who loved tsop music, motown and soul music. And to add to that my aunt was an original bandstander. So dance music was in the blood. I guess my bosses were happy with me. they bent over backwards to keep me. the original booth was on the stage behind the band. the second year they built me a huge booth that overlooked the whole club. also they had me go on roads trips to help choose the bands that would play there. and give me an unlimited budget for equipment and music. just had to ask and I got it. I probably would have stayed until they sold the club a few years later but i got married and started to raise my family.

You really had a great set-up famdam! 8) A nice booth , good bosses and especially the money's no object part !! The clubs that were happenin' did have that attitude ....
How many nights did you spin ?? What were the hours ?
Did you belong to a pool ?
And ..... did you get to keep your music library !!
*****
i was paid from 8pm-5am. out of the 9 hours, i spun for about for about 5 hours. 1/2 hour between band sets and straight through from 3am to last call at 4:30am. Wasn't part of a record pool. Being a summer resort area for Philly, New York & Jersey some artists would give us their records to get play time like they did for radio stations to get airtime. A few of the other djs and I took care of each when we went shopping. Once of us usually went on a weekly run for new tunes and take each others list. We pretty much had the same format so we would get extras of stuff we would find that we thought each other would like. Since most of the music at that time was out of New York and Philly we had shopped for our tunes in some great record stores throughout the tri-sate that catered to djs. Usually we had the stuff as it was just coming out on the shelves. As to my collection, the club bought the vinyl and allowed me to by doubles of what i wanted to keep for myself(awesome, huh?).

Famdam ..... You had one of the most impressive set-ups I've ever seen !!
So your job was to keep the crowd happy and groovin' between the live sessions and then afterward. I think that'd be a fun gig ....
Until 4:30 am + too ..... so drinks were served that late there , the bar served until 4:30 ??
Is this a continuous in- house band playing each time .... or did you bring in touring acts ??
Very generous owners ...."oh , and buy yourself a copy too ! " 8)
Now , please say you kept all those records ....

Monday nights was oldies night. we had a oldies band play everything from the 50-70's. the also had a elvis set. the rest of the week tues-thurs we would have a different band. and on the weekends the better bands would play. usually once during the summer season we have a bigger band play. The Tramps played there a few times during their heyday! pretty much my job was to keep them on the crowd on the floor. the drinks flowed until last call at 4:30 when the last song was played. the customer had to be out the door by 5:00. it's not that way today. the clubs closed at 3:00am now. they were trying to push this in the 80's because of the noise laws. i remember the local neighborhood people calling in noise complaints to the police. so we were not allowed to keep our doors open after a certain time. i have almost all my music give or take are few (wear and tear). Plus my kids now teens are into a lot of the music. Especially when I hear some of their music that sampled stuff from then, they will hear me singing or inmitating the beat and say how do you know that. i say they ripped it from my time and to prove it i'll pull out the vinyl.

Hmmm .... I think I see the basic framework for a movie here : "MY MOM WAS A DISCO DJ ! "
The nerve of those light-sleeping neighbors......bothered by drunkards on the streets at 5:00 AM ...
Ya, noisy drunkards at 3: 00 AM is much better !!!
Congrats on your experiences famdam .... sounds really cool ....... I bet you could tell some stories ......
