Bunny Sigler's 'By The Way You Dance' - How Many 12" Mi

I've been meaning to ask this for awhile, but I kept forgetting. I bought the Unidisc CD reissue of Bunny Sigler's 'I've Always Wanted To Sing...' This CD not only includes the original LP mix (7:22) of 'By The Way You Dance', it also includes the 9:13 12" mix which was also featured on one of the Salsoul Classic double disc compilations. The CD also includes the extended 12" version of 'Glad To Be Your Lover'. I've also got these mixes on vinyl.

But there are two EXTRA 12" mixes of By The Way You Dance, but where did they come from? They sound different from the official 12" release version. One is 8.37 and called a 'remix' and there is another is 9.39 and called '12" mix'.

I seem to only recall there ever only being one 12" mix out there. I believe there were two 12"s release, one with the song on both sides, and the other, which I have, has I'm Funkin You. They both have the 9.13 mix. So where did those two mysterious extended mixes come from? They're not 80s house remixes. They sound like they were done back in '79 as well. I know there was a Larry Levan version on a compilation disc of his remixes, but that one was more than 10 minutes long.

    Any ideas?

    Hey Guys

Any chance we can resurrect this thread? I am still trying to find out the answer myself.

This 12 inch version of "By the Way You Dance" clocks in at 7:20, but it doesn't list Bobby "DJ" Guttadaro as the remixer as on the 9:21 version:

There were two versions of this at the time — what was commercially released with a black label, and then there were white label promos, and some pressings differed from the commercial version, but the label info was the same. What I remember being told when I was turned onto this record was that you had to play to promo to see if the one you found differed from the commercial version. Then the version known as the Larry Levan mix surfaced later.

    Thanks Bernie.

So I may have found a few things on Discogs...

The 9:14 mix is the Guttadaro mix I assume—haven't had chance to play the original vinyl yet (short 7 seconds from what is indicated on original 12" @ 9:21? or was the original a misprint? just extra silence pre/post the track?)

The 9:40 mix looks like a Tom Moulton Mix, released on a Salsoul DJ Tools LP in 2001, entitled "original mix" and "a tom moulton mix." Not sure if this is a newer mix, or originally unreleased.

The 8:37 mix is found on a K-Tel German 4-LP Salsoul compilation (and on CD), however no remixer credits.

Having been released by Unidisc, I am sure they had all of these mixes lying around as alternative mixes never released (publicly at least).

I have no idea where the other versions may have originated, but if they were never issued anywhere else, well... let's just say it would not be the first time that Unidisc has unearthed vintage unreleased mixes. There have been several cases where they have, without any indication, put out long-lost mixes on their albums and compilations. One example I could give you is the Jim Burgess remix of Bionic Boogie's "Chains", for which there was considerable debate as to whether it existed at all. Turns out Unidisc had quietly put it on a nondescript compilation in the 90s, buried amongst a pile of largely unrelated material. Another is the 8-minute version of "It's All Up To You" by Andrea True Connection on their "Best of" compilation, which does not seem to have previously existed, even on promos.

Whether they do this by accident or by design, I have no idea.

    Barry,
I own the white label promo of "By the Way You Dance" and the label states 7:20 as on the black commercial label. I'll have to take a careful listen later to see if indeed it is 7:20 or the longer 9:21 Guttadaro mix. I'll also try and post it to the Disco Record's Vault.

    GroovinYou,
I have that Indigo release with the 8:40/8:37 mix on a 2 CD set: http://www.discomusic.com/cds-more/1090_0_3_0_C/
The version I have on the above CD apparently is not the Bobby "DJ" Guttadaro 9:21 mix as it starts with a guitar riff before it breaks into the main song, but it's doesn't appear to be the Larry Levan version.

The "claimed" Larry Levan version as it doesn't show a label...

    Here's a label showing 7:05 sounding different:

    The Bobby "DJ" Guttadaro version:

Re: Bunny Sigler's 'By The Way You Dance' - How Many 12" Mi

So I just checked what I have — the black label 12" with the 7:20 version on both sides and a matrix number GG-403-A-1 on both sides, and a white label promo also labeled 7:20 on both sides, but with a clearly longer mix on both sides with the matrix number GG-403-A-10 on each side. Although neither side credits Guttadaro, I'm assuming that's the Guttadaro mix on both sides; it timed to around 9:13. Clearly there were some mix-ups with this record.

Thanks Bernie and Sfbeary for taking time to pinpoint the info. Yea I cannot find any reference to the 8:37 version anywhere accept that Indigo release. And the 9 min Tom Moulton version, not sure if that was a new mix done for the DJ tools release, or just one of unidisc's unearthed mixes.

    Barry,
Thanks for the additional info on the matrix number. The white label I have has a matrix of GG-403-A-1 like the commercial pressing. Makes you wonder why they just didn't issue it on a new catalogue number to avoid confusion.

I was very disappointed by the cd "I've Always Wanted To Sing..."*(including the song "By The Way You Dance (I Knew It Was You)"). Not his best work.*IMO, there's is a sub-category in the world of disco/dance: the so-so song with too many mixes that can't really rescue it (like*"By The Way You Dance" but also*Diana Ross "Lovin' Livin' and Givin'" or "Pops We Love you").
