    DJs/Dancing

When dancing do you prefer the dj to stick to bpms and give a set a more polished sound or do you like djs who are kind of random and give a more raw feel to a set? OR does it not matter at all?

I think its good to start of with some slower bpm stuff, then get to a high bpm when everyone is really dancing and keep it that way for a while. I imagine its good to do a slower period again to give people some time to catch their breaths, and then hit them again with high bpms.

Thanks for the info... I happen to agree with what you said 100%. I think it would be harder to create the atmosphere a dj was going for when the bpms are so random. I think I will try to dj a party for my friends and use the bpm technique. Mind you, I've never dj'd before and would be doing it with mp3s (I know!). But, I think it would be fun and my friends only know the disco songs that are overplayed. So, it could be fun for them, too. Thanks again.

all your friends like disco? If not, I wonder how they'll react... this could be interesting.

More adaptive in other words better crowds can handle and apparently want to dance to a all kinds of bpms during a set. Last week in Paris I kept the count at c 120 - 122 for a half an hour ( Metropolis: Miss Manhattan, Hubert laws: Chigaco Theme, Disco Dub Band: For The Love Of Money, Sergio Mendes: Superstition etc ) and then brought on Jorge Ben's "Taj Mahal", the fierce original 1976 lp version. The ultrafast beyond-bpms break caused the dancers to twitch and shake as if trying to shed their skins, hands in the air and whoops all around. So - if you got the crowd, give them the bpms!

Of course a clever DJ (like me   ) would maybe take a crowd up and bring 'em down several times within a set. I nearly always used to start in the low 100's take it up a few BPMs at a time to 130 or so, bring it down a tad to the low 120's and then maybe take it up again, before slowing it right down. It was easier BITD 'cos there were certain records that were either 'hits' or 'hot' and they could be anywhere within the BPM spectrum. They would have just as good an effect on the dansefloor as non-stop high BPMs, so it was possible to hit 'em with a slower BPM record, but crucially still maintain a very positive vibe. I for one would far rather listen or dance to a jock who did that, than one who just maintained a non-stop high BPM buzz for sustained periods......BORING!!!!

    Hey everyone,

Thanks for all of your input on this. You have all given me great ideas. And efunk, to answer your questions... No. All of my friends are not into disco. Mostly, they're only familiar with the hits on the compilation CDs (I know). But I have hope that I can turn them on to "real" disco. They're all really artistic types who like to find beauty in everything. And, for me, disco is probably the most beautiful (expressive) music form I've ever heard. I think the music speaks volumes. And I want to convey that in my set. Do you guys have any suggestions? Also, for those who were djs BITD, do you find it hard to meld Eurodisco with Souldisco (I made that up). I can't find a balance. It's always one way more than the other.

I recently.... around 2 years ago... did a spot DJ at a local club where I got young 20-25 year old peeps to dance to these songs... and they loved it!

People's Choice - Do It Anyway You Wanna
Andrea True Connection - More, More, More
Marvin Gaye - Got To Give It Up
    Chic - Le Freak
SOS Band - Take Your Time (Do It Right)

that I can remember... normally I do things on spot and just mix without trying to do the same thing week to week.

I'll never forget the energy level as they were having so much fun... I probably could've played anything that night... One of my most powerful shows ever.

Bryce: Unless you want to open a REAL can o' worms, it might be better to list what you're thinking of playing and we give our opinions. Otherwise all you're gonna get are impossibly rare selections from the the big dick brigade that hang around here. I could tell you a whole raft of great underground records, but many of them ain't on CDs and even the vinyl is difficult to get hold of at a sensible price. I could, but I wouldn't.......just in case you're a jock who's looking for a quick fix to instant Disco cred. Ain't I mean?

Prepared to get real you are obviously prepared to spin vinyls, and to look into that "can of worms" mentioned in an above post up there - anyone seriously considering dj-ing will want to spend endless hours hunting rare records, and to know what the desirable titles are in each genre. To meld Eurodisco with Deep Disco you need to possess confidence and the right records - try using Disco Circus by Martin Circus as a bridge from a deep/soulful sound to something more euro like Crocos Dance by Revelacion.

Its not too hard but normally a case of taking records that wouldve been big/played on both scenes like 'Love is in you', or a lot of Sylvester stuff
