African Queens? Sir Alec? She spinned it and they loved it

Any doubts that "Romeo and Juliet", "African Queens" or "Sun..I Love You" by Claudia Cardinale would not make a young trendy crowd dance like dervishes for 6 hours non stop were finally laid to rest last weekend in Paris. First consider the venue: the inside of the Nouveau Casino looks like a vast cocoon made of rusty neo-cubist iron panels, decorated with baroque chandeliers and further illuminated by massive old lightning devices from operating theatres. On the cinema-size screen above the stage, an endless shifting series of images and details from classic and obscure 70's disco albums, a close-up of the moustaches of Tom Moulton, Amanda Lear striking a pose, laughing, screaming faces of unknown hedonists, the spirit of Disco. Then the people began arriving in all styles, colours, ages and sizes, flamboyant gay guys in latest clubwear, a 50-something disco queen displaying a pair of still dashing legs leading into stiletto heels, girls who begin to boogie once past the door. And on the stage, dj Aicha, spinning the VINYLS like an angel from disco heaven in feverish overdrive, working the decks with infectious energy, never missing a beat as she sequed from a chorus to a massive break and on and on to faster and faster bpms, violins from the Trident studios, drums pounding and voices rejoicing. The camera crew from MTV London was there, shooting the capoiera-style dance displays, a small Japanese woman in a sequined Prada dress doing a wild 60's style go-go, and the cool party pros of the upstairs lounge. As the action heated up and the air of the space became thicker with smoke the dancing figures, the mirror balls and the lights seemed to morph and form a caleidoscope of all things disco - I narrowed my eyes and flashes from peak hour 12 West, Paradise Garage and Le Camarque of Nice bursted forth from my brain. Truly, Aicha's party was the proof: spinned right, non-commercial real underground disco has lost none of it's power. It will live forever. And it's not about yesterday, it's about today - people came to me and enthused how they had never heard music like that before, wonderful melodies instead of an endless robotic electro beat, they wanted more. And luckily, Aicha will do more. Be prepared.

Remind me NEVER to go to Paris, in search of the perfect beat.

I realise you're an enthusiastic type Jussi, but do you have to be quite sooooo gushing? Your description of this little soiree nearly made me choke on my cornflakes.

    I agree! 8) :D

Most encouraging... sounds so extravagant .... ......could it really ever be as much fun once again ?? I guess it depends on the moods and attitudes of the community that perhaps rises up around it ..... that's how it happened before.
Maybe the young are ready to put away those game boys and take back the night once again ..... 8)

( Quinny I'm thinking maybe you just accidentally choked on your tie once again .... you simply must sit up straight at the breakfast table ! :P )

Remicks, you never wear a tie @ breakfast ? OMG, I thought you had class :o

Quinny, why don't we have a little rendez-vous in Paris, mmmh. I promised I would visit Aïcha and Jussi and in April the big funfair starts over there. So we have a few rides at my expense and then we go Disco on the soundz of Sir Alec, African Queens, Cerrone and all the other stuff you like so much!

I'll come and pick you up with the Brabus at the Station. So you can feel how it's like to ride a real automobile :P

Aïcha, Jussi, keep up the good work and play those vibes till the break of dawn!

Don't have to go to Paris for the perfect beat, Quinny mate. Aicha will be in London next week for Herbal, for 3 nights in a row no less, and I'll tell her to look for an ex-dj from Torremolinos in a faded "Blues and Soul" t-shirt sweating in a corner, praying to god as "African Queens" blasts from the speakers, trying not to dance, trying not to give in to devil's music, trying so hard, and failing :-)

I am going to try and get down there tomorrow & check it out. There are quite a lot of Soul, Funk & Disco events this weekend in London. According to Herbal's website she is only doing the Saturday show !!

It will be fascinating to see how a London crowd takes to the music she plays, which is 'right out there' Disco! Hence the reason I want to go! Any idea what time she is on?

She told me she'll have the middle time slot. What that means only the Herbal will know.

But early in April keep an eye for MTV Switched On's disco special with Dimitri of Paris and Aicha. Your's truly just might also make an appearance, blinded by the lights, demonstrating with Ms A how to do the latin hustle...

I just know should they keep the dance display in my humiliation will be unbearable. I have been reduced to that level once before in Italian tv a couple of years ago, trying to get Fiore Argento, the incredibly glamorous daughter of famed horror director Dario, to follow the steps live on air. That was the only thing I could think of to avoid having to do the Disco Karaoke the producers had envisioned me to host, without telling me in advance of course. Refusing to sing along to I Will Survive I was later in the night thrown out of the dj booth, without my salary, to find my own way back to the hotel from the Olympic Village at 4 in the morning. Next day, I found out they had not paid for my room, either...the delights of being ripped off by the mafia.

Being in the position of having head her exquisite selections, let me offer my personal suggestions for a "Les Rythmes Interdites - Disco for The Sophisticated Savage" style cd Aicha should be putting out. A tune I'd love to see included is her Viandro record - this is absolutely what rarified gourmet cheese is all about, a seduction scene with a great little sax driven melody and huge amounts of moaning and screaming. Then "Magic Mandrake" :"Oh, you wonderful mannn, if only I could hafff you, you would turn this citee into a rose-scented gardennn" ( spoken with a French accent thick as ripe Camembert). Third choice: "Put Yourself In My Place" by TJM - could not get that out of my head and was still humming it in the taxi to CDG.

Aah! The SAAR Band, a Quinny "HOT SHOT" BITD. Notable for its rhythmic similarity to Roy Ayers' Running Away, Peoples Choice Jam, Jam, Jam among others, aaaaand yes, those very druggy sounding female spoken parts which are a hoot. Were they French, Belgian, French Canadian or even German. I always thought they were maybe a radio big band offshoot (SAR radio?), but no-one seems to know anything about them.

I could not dream more better : a night spinning with a "name" like Dimitri from Paris or sharing a real disco moment and magic with Mister Jussi Kantonen, who's a very honourable member of the today Disco community ?

Jussi and I will spin this summer, the saturday 5th August at this fantastic place, Nouveau Casino which is, as we know now, Paris best sound system to spread the Disco sound power : strings, instrumentals, killing bass drum, latino or afro percussions and chorists... hedonism, camp, hustle..

Any planned holidays this summer? You come from other European country or beyond ? Wanna hear real Disco sound in OUR way (vynils, NO reedits, No fake, No todays "nu" disco, no "expected" disco or anything this way). Lets start another fantastic voyage in Disco era and culture, Disco heaven is not far with us !

No 'mainstream' Lord, no 'electro' Evil, only "dancing angels" (we are first !) living for the passion of Disco, collecting and sharing our love for the music and movement.

    Disco will never die !!

Aïcha, I can not open your mails (for a strange reason they're bounced by my security router).

If you contact me, try Discobumpercars@hotmail.com or Discobumpercars@aim.com first :D

Unfortunately, I still can't join the party. Time is just not on my side these days. I even had to quit with the Belgian "Boogie Nights" crew :(

But, someday, somewhere in autumn/winter I could pay you and Mr. Jussi a visit.

Coz' I know your party is my party :icon_exclaim:

Good luck to da both of you and till....????

It is great to hear that today's generation likes the kind of disco that always makes me happy and transports me into a different dimension. Last night, I played a custom-made CD with the following tracks:

GIVE ME LOVE/LOVE IS HERE/LOVE IS THE ANSWER-Cerrone
I FOUND LOVE (NOW THAT I FOUND YOU)-Love & Kisses
KNIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN/IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT/KNIGHTS IN
    WHITE SATIN-Giorgio
    I LOVE AMERICA-Patrick Juvet
    PLEASURE ISLAND-Paul Jabara

and Part One of another CD....

    CHASE-Giorgio Moroder
    DANCE, FREAK AND BOOGIE-Nightlife Unlimited
    THE BULL-Mike Theodore Orchestra
"Everyone knows the real reason why you got that part it was the time you spent on that casting couch"--Antoine Merriwether
"Excuse me, Miss Thing, but both of us spent time on that couch"--Blaine Edwards

Euro Euro Eurodisco guy !! My best part of this Cerrone LP face is "love is the answer" especially when girls are singing in the beginning "looooove is such a good thing, feel it, feel it all around youuuu" - Costandinos is THE disco man i love : got always one Costandinos in my record bag. At a party i DARED to play Judas Ischariot Suite... Moroder, belolo & Morali, well Pick me up and dance !!

Well, there ain't no stopping us now! The Divine Miss Aicha is set to preside over several dj booths here in Finland as well, during the month of July. We'll make rooms shake. Drums will pound, vocals will be fierce and strings will splash out in violet, gold and green. Of the four venues, the most prestigious/notorious belongs to the DTM, the largest mixed/gay emporium in the nordisc countries. Surfaces glimmer phorescentendly, light sources glint off a multitude of mirror balls, drag queens shriek and stairways lead up to labyrinths. " a glamorous overdose of Disco hysteria". So anyone, if you're in the vicinity Friday July the 14th come and submerge yourself into a world of music, tastes and textures that build up to an universe of pure disco sleaze.
