I agree. There has to be some reason for these types of threads to exist - otherwise, everyone is going to keep mentioning minor but semi-popular disco songs most of us are quite well aware of.
Well, the title of the song tells it all, besides, Jimmy "Bo"Horne is East Coast Disco (actualy Miamy Soul) and Dynasty is West Coast Disco. (SOLAR= Sound Of Los Angeles Records)
It was the first 12 Inch I bought, and every time after some years, the song apears on some collection album, and every time I like it again...!!
( one more thing, SOLAR productions were never very popular overhere in The Netherlands, they were only played in clubs...!!
The same in Belgium! Shalamar was pretty popular, the other Solar-acts weren't.Originally Written by Skywalker
This is a real good song. I like it a lot
What makes it special imo, is that this song is about DISCO, not about "I love you, do you love me"...etc!!!
HiGuys,
When I saw this record I thought 'this was TOO popular a record...the idea of the thread was to find Hidden Gems !!!
However, Upon researching ....it turns out that it was a bigger hit in USA on the R&B chart than the Disco/Dance charts (according to Joel W.)
And moreover, in the UK it was a Top 20 hit...That's why I was so tetchy about it being included. (Dynasty actually had bigger hits later in their career both in USA and UK.)
However, IDWTBAF WAS a classic disco sound, that's why it makes a lot of the retro CD albums on Disco.
I originally had it on 7" and loved it, but when I heard it on the 12" I wasn't overly keen at first as it seemed too drawn out.
It wasn't till later in life I discovered the possibilities of the 12" version, with it's myriad breakdowns and different instrument leads.
It has a terrific bass 'expedition' moving through all sorts of patterns, and the chix sung chorus with the parallel piano tinkles and end claps is very catchy...However the best parts are the breakdowns...IS IT BLONDIES' HEART OF GLASS in the background ??...the percussion throughout is very good, and the strings lift the song just when needed.
As a 'Freak' record it is emminantly playable.
IT was certainly a different sound that the West coast had compared to the East, West seemed to be more singalong (Whispers, Shalamar,) but with some wicked hooks and musical swing.
A good choice after all......I await the next with bated breath......
Well, it's me again!
How about Fox The Fox- "Precious Little Diamond" (Shep Pettibone mix) 1984.
What makes this one hit wonder special to me is that this duo came from my hometown, Groningen, Netherlands.
Bert Tamaela had a minor DISCO hit some years earlier with Boozy- "Dance To The Music" ( wich I have on 7").
It might be best to stay with one record for the week. So save Fox the Fox for Sunday when we start over again. Thanks.Originally Written by Skywalker
Well said Bernie.
We have to ensure those interested get a say on each record (Hopefully)
