I wonder if anyone has particular favorite moments in disco songs? Like a few seconds that might give you a chill or goosebumps if you were listening to it undistracted? A couple of mine are:

In Musique's "Summer Love Theme" instrumental, (from "Keep On Jumpin'" album), 5:37 in, right when it switches from the break back to the instrumental chorus but in a higher key.

France Joli's delightful high note of desire (ah well, you know) near the end of "Come To Me".

    Hello Usagi!

I think everybody has favourite moments. Mine are too many too mention, but I will list 3 or 4 disco songs which encompass what I like best in disco-music:

    1 - MANHATHAN LOVE SONG

    king errison & mike theodore

    2 - LE SPANK

    le pamplemousse

    3 - AFRODESIA

    el coco

    4 - DANCING IN PARADISE

    el coco

What these songs have in common is the lush orchestration or perfect string section arrangements playing against melodic keyboards. In the case of Le Spank (which has no strings), the full version has wonderful horn solos.

Many disco songs of mid to late 70's are like that (very long suires with orchestras, keyboards, horns, instrumental breaks, lots of percussion...) The producers of the time had maximum freedom to do whatever they liked.

That's why I don't have admiration for any disco singers, but I like a lot disco producers. RINDER & LEWIS are my favourites, but I also love a lot CERRONE, D.C. LA RUE and VINCENT MONTANA.

    Bye Usagi

    Take care

Wow, I have lot of goosebumps when I listen at "Summer love theme" by Musique. But there are many more, just right now I remember "Let the music play" by the Maestro.

But still a have a thrill whenever I listen at "That's the way of the world" by EWF.

I think this is the most positive effect the music could give.

    Hi guys

I know it isn't disco music properly, but I get crazy whenever I listen to:

    1 - SURRENDER

    2 - TWILIGHT WORLD

3 - WHO LET THE LOVE OUT ?

All 3 songs by a perfect pop group from the 80's: SWING OUT SISTER

    Anyone here likes them?

    Bye

    Paulo,

I'm a big fan of Swing Out Sister also.

    My faves would include:

    Twilight World

    Communion

    Am I The Same Girl

    Everyday Crime

    Breakout

    Notgonnachange

La La Means I Love You

& Fever (not the Peggy Lee classic, but a cut I found on their "Best Of" Collection import CD).

Anyone know if they have any plans to release anything new???

I miss the old days of SOS, Lisa Stansfield, Basia, Everything But The Girl, Brand New Heavies, Incognito, etc. releasing new stuff on a regular basis; how about you?

Marky, are you familiar with the Anthem Mix of Basia's "Drunk On Love"? That thing is SICK, I love it! I'd also recommend the remixes Justin Strauss did for Basia for "Promises", especially the Samba mix.

    Hello Marky!

Great to see your post. Swing Out Sister is alive and well. They have just released a new album called SOMEWHERE DEEP IN THE NIGHT, but as you know, the majority of 80's groups have been forgoten in the 90's (apart from Madona and Michael Jackson). Swing Out Sister have been releasing albums on a regular basis, but they are only released in Japan.

    The discography is:

    1 - IT'S BETTER TO TRAVEL 1986

    2 - KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD 1989

3 - GET IN TOUCH WITH YOURSELF 1992

4 - LIVE AT THE JAZZ CAFE 1993

    5 - THE LIVING RETURN 1994

    6 - SHAPES AND PATTERNS 1996

    7 - FILTH AND DREAMS 1998

8 - SOMEWHERE DEEP IN THE NIGHT 2001

Their music has changed a bit from the initial hi-nrg influenced pop to a sophisticated jazzy sound which includes complex strings and horn arrangements, but it is still very very beautiful.

Please marky check their site http://www.swingoutsister.com

You will find a biography, discography with the 12" remixes and a nice message board which I visit. It would be great to have you also there as a memeber since your postings are interesting to read.

    Thank you and take care

One moment that immediately comes to mind is the "ooo-oo-oo-ooo" background vocal bit in Marlena Shaw's "Touch Me in the Morning." For some reason it strikes me as a really haunting and atmospheric touch to the arrangement. Another fave is the transition after the first vocal parts in "How Much, How Much I Love You" by Love and Kisses, where the orchestration abruptly drops away, leaving the bass line and simple 4/4 beat, which are slowly joined by bongos and the slowly returning strings. The interplay between the strings and the bass line is marvellous.

There's just too many to mention... lessee...

    - The string refrain at the end of "Afrodesia"

    - The part about halfway through "Make That Feeling Come Again"

    - MacArthur Park: "There will be another song for me..."

    - Opening strings to "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You"

    - Bridge towards the end of "Blue Steel" just before it kicks into the final refrain

    There are so many more...

    Hey usagi,

Lke graham said, there are too many to mention. Right now I'm really digging on how well the strings were arranged in Loving Is Really My Game. I just love the way strings are infused into the music. I'm no music expert but is this part of what they call syncopated rhythm? Anyway I love the whole song in general and it in many ways to me represent the best of American disco.

In the middle of the extended version of Marlena Shaw's Love Dancin' when the bassline comes in, and the guys sing, "Love dancin'."

The intro to Lime's Babe We're Gonna Love Tonight.

In Gino Soccio's Dance To Dance where the women sing "Music feels so good. Music feels so right. It just keeps me dancing till the morning light." Then "It's killing me" repeated several times. Then "Music takes me high."

In Dan Hartman's Relight My Fire when Loleatta Holloway's vocals comes in.

The string section solo in the middle of Destination's Move On Up.
"Because there's music in the air."

I know exactly what you mean.

The strongest moments I've have exeprienced where in Alfie Khan Sound Orchestra's "Illegal Toys" when the galopping percussion ends and the strings start to play (happens 3 times in the song).

Another one would be the remix of Kikrokos' "Jungle D.J." by Jim Burgess @ about 3"35'.

    Re: favorite disco song moments?

I have just "disco"vered this forum, and this is my very first post.

I'll have to go with the beginning of "We Close Our Eyes"....when it cuts from the intro into the horn blasts, starting the song. It SLAYS me every time!

I just want to say I have spent the last 2 weeks reading...and reading....and reading things on this board. I have read so much that my eyes become bleary and I have to shut down the computer.

There is so much knowledge of this genre of music posted here. I once thought I was quite knowledgeable about dance/disco music. I now know I am but a novice. I have really enjoyed being here, reading the boards, and listening to various mixes and songs posted. Currently I am listening to someones mix I found on the Sleeze/Morning Music entry...it starts with "Like an Eagle", includes "Knights in White Satin"...and that's as far as I have gotten. Wonderful mixing, and a great set of songs. Whoever you are, I tip my hat to you, sir!

You will be seeing more posts from me....be assured!!!!

Thumbs up Re: favorite disco song moments?

I agree there are just too many to list up here!

But one's that come directly to mind with that goose bump factor....

The breakdown in the middle of the 12' version of Inner Life - Ain't No Mountain High Enough - when everything just stops and the synths start playing WhooEEEee!...violins come in, ...tomtom drops,:icon_eek::icon_eek:

The hook from Norma Jean - High Society - music and lyrics ....:icon_cool:

Machine - There But For The Grace of God....what can I say, the whole damn song, strong lyrics wicked synths, awesome arrangements....

    Re: favorite disco song moments?

To complete the discography from a previous post, Swing Out Sister also released Where our love grows in 2004 on Shanachie in the US. It was very Fifth Dimention inspired and had many complex string and horn counter-melodies. Burt Bacharach even had a songwriting/sample credit. It's actually my favorite of all their releases because it has a unique sound original sound which runs throughout the LP.

My all-time favorite part of any disco record is the breaks in Cymande's "Bra" and Crown Heights Affair "Dreaming a dream", the ending on the 12" version of McFadden and Whitehead's "Aint no stoppin us now", and the long flute solo in Brick's "Dazz".

I always liked the fadeout on Teena Marie's 'Behind The Groove' with those freaky-sounding synth sounds. I'd really love an extended version of the 12" so it lasted a bit longer. Another personal fave moment is the string build-up just before the first 'love meeee' on Cerrone's Love In C Minor. Bliss. Oh & when the strings come back in on Relight My Fire after the 'swirling' break near the end. I also like sudden changes of key; the best bit of many Stock Aitken Waterman tracks is the total change between the verses & choruses; the contrast is striking IMO.

    Re: favorite disco song moments?

The first 3 moments that come to mind for me are:

The Letter (Amii Stewart) when her voice morphs into a saxophone solo during an extended high note...I had never heard anything quite like that before or since. It's true recording magic: masterfully done.

Whatcha Gonna Do About It (Rozalin Woods) When she taunts you with a repeated (almost menacing) chant of "whatcha gonna do about it!"

You're the Fire (Cissy Houston) The high energy electronica intro that starts the song out is quite different from the more soulful body of the song. It's electrifying! And that Michael Zager could make the whole dichotomy work together is pure artistry.

I have very many juicy&appetite moments in disco. But the first what coming in my mind, when I’m unswerving in this post, is the moment when the base begins to play in CERRONE’S PARADISE. I mean exactly very-very beginning when bass syncopates the dialog between drums and funky-rhythming guitar and then, in the end, making glissando. How wonderful to listen all this on “something there and far like echo-sounding” strings-panorama! How the bass pulsation is drawing the main figure of the composition and driving all the time further is very near to myself thinking in arrangements, because I’m baseman too!!!

Hundreds of uplifting, happy segments in Disco, Funk and the like, but one that puzzles me, 'cos it still affects me in the same way after 30 odd years (and there's absolutely no reason why it should, really) is......

Towards the end of Jimmy Ruffin's Tell Me What You Want when the backing singer(s) sings the lines, in a rather strained manner "Don't worry, Don't ya' worry baby, set your mind at ease". It ALWAYS brings on tears of sheer unadulterated joy.

Lou Rawls- One Life To Live.
The whole song is just so full of emotions. Great voice, melody and harmonies and meaningful lyrics.

Ullanda McCullough - Bad Company 2:15 - 2:20 into the song (7inch version). Listen to it and tell me if it doesn't make you shiver...

One of my favorites (far too many to list them all here) is near the end of Cheryl Lynn's classic "Got to be Real" where she shreaks: "Soo-hoo, soo-hoo, soo-hoon, I got to have you baby!", extending the word "soon". Oddly, some versions of this song don't have that vocal line on it (the version of the song on my copy of her debut album doesn't have it, the version on the "A Night at Studio 54" does have it). She sings that line like her vocal cords were on fire. I'm amazed at how confident she was on her debut album and in case you didn't know it, that's her female vocal ad libs on Toto's "Georgy Porgy".
