James Brown : The Original Disco Man

    *****

    :o :o

I just got the single of this ... ( I honestly was never before familiar with this song  ) as I replay it for play # 8.....
I now cannot wait to get the album ....... 8) 8)

This is fun Paul Jabara-ish, yet still funky stuff (It's raining men, y'all )!!! Loaded with lots of tricks and whistles .... constant cheers and crowd noises ... shake your tambourines soul brothers .... yet all grounded by a prominent bass line .....
I keep expecting Disco Tex to join in ( perhaps the Sex-O-lettes are present , but I can't tell if its Kenny Nolan :P ) Sometimes it sounds like Barry Manilow doing back-up...about to break into "just like Romeo & Juliet" .....

James Brown ' s presence is just right ... & reverbed and echoed to perfection. I like his stylizing in this ....

I keep trying to think of what song I'd mix it into ..... probably Gary's Gang KEEP ON DANCING

I'm not kidding .... this is cleverly fun, disco playfulness: not sterile , 1979 run of the mill formula stuff .. like I was dreading ..... you can hear some of the future in this mix too ... not entirely a throw -back sound ....

If James Brown didn't enjoy this project ... too bad... I hope he did more fun than he now wants to admit .... sure sounds like he did !

    Who knew ? :-? 8)

Well said! I love this song too; I can hear it in my head now "..he's the original.. bona fide original.. original disco man.. (you got the funk!)" :) . I know I've said this before, but I really enjoy the album too.. "Star Generation" is another fave of mine, especially when it goes into that Gino Soccio-ish electro break in the middle..

I'm glad someone shares my enthusiasm !! :D on this one. I wondered if anyone else could possibly agree ....
I've looked forward to coming home and hearing it all day ....

When I first put it on ..... I really thought I was just going thru the motions .... I bought it ...give it it's mandatory play ..... before filing it away ..... but then I was pleasantly surprised by this number ... and was hooked !

--- I always love it when that happens ... preconceived notions shattered to pieces ..... and.... a new fave to enjoy results ..... :)

I'm quite caught off guard by how playful and festive this piece is. If I played this cold to somebody .... I can just imagine them saying "Wait a minute .... is that James Brown I hear in there ???? "
And maybe James Brown hated it .... but I hope not and I doubt it ..... because I don't think he'd stand for putting his stamp on something that he couldn't at the time get behind ....

This 45 is long 4:38 but I'm hoping the LP version will be even longer .... ??

Disco Funk ... this makes James Brown the Original Johnny-Come-Lately-Disco Man !!!! :P ....

and this tune is disco delightful with some lovely piano tinkering..... cow bells .... hand claps ..... but .... still no strings !!!!

Yeah he certainly sounds convincing on this album.. I can imagine him maybe hating it afterwards, but not during the recording.. Or then again, maybe he's just that good.. Whatever the case, I stand by my enjoyment of this album :)

"..Original Disco Man" is a little bit longer on the album.. The copy I have here lists 6.55 as the timing..

Two and a quarter minutes more of this song ..... 8)

As for Brad Shapiro .... I see he produced Kokomo and Brandye in '76 ..... did he do anything else worth seeking out ??

BTW Disco Funk ..... I found a single he and Dave Crawford produced together ....

NOBODY'S FAULT BUT MY MINE ( Otis Redding) by Arthur Conley
a sort of Temptatation's BALL OF CONFUSION sounding tune ....

There must be a close knit group within this .... as Dave Crawford worked with Jackie Moore very early on .... and later Brad Shapiro worked with her in 1980 .....

Thought it timely to pull this forward and maybe someone might add comment ... :icon_confused:

I've come upon the album a couple of times since but (foolishly) wasn't willing to match the price. Hoo-wee , it's going to be expensive now , isn't it ......

and is that a great cover ... or what ! :icon_cool:
