    Song in Saturday Night Fever

I've been trying like hell to find out the name of the song and/or artist of the song played when Tony and Annette are practicing in the studio. No luck. And it's NOT in the soundtrack. I've also tried looking for Saturday Night Fever fansites or imdb. There aren't any lyrics during the clip in the movie.

    Any help is most appreciated.

If you're talking about that instrumental piece, I've been trying to figure out that one for years. I'm hoping its a track that was released, on not some incidental music that David Shire made but never included on the LP. I don't think they even credit that rock guitar track you hear playing during the fight scene and when someone sticks an eight track tape into the player in the car.

You're thinking of the scene where Tony and Stephanie start off in the smaller studio, and then they move to the bigger dance studio, and spin around at the end of the scene. The Annette and Tony dance scene is early in the movie (probably first 1/2 hour) and I think it was the first time Tony dances with Annette after talking or learning about the dance contest.

I can't tell you the DVD minutes mark because my girlfriend borrowed my DVD, but it's the scene where Tony is where a tanktop and practicing with Annette, (NOT Stephanie), and he's saying, "1, 2, 3. 2, 2, 3. 1, 2. 1, 2, 3. Good." Annette also says, "Jesus, Tony, it's only dancing!"

    Song in Saturday Night Fever

I found out there was an uncredited song in Saturday Night Fever that could possibly be the song in the "Tony & Annette" practice scene. In the practice scence, Annette says, "It's only Dancing". The song is called, "Second Lowdown" by Toto. It was produced by David Shire. There was also another song in the movie by David Shire called, "Barracuda Hangout". I hope this helps.

Second Lowdown - that could be it. Too bad it was also produced by David Shire according to one website. And it wasn't released by Toto, the guys who played on the first Lowdown AKA Boz Scagg's Lowdown. Barracuda Hangout is the one with the rock guitar solo.

I wish they would reissue the SNF album with the unreleased incidental music. They could squeeze more songs on a double CD re-release. They should also include the 7 minute Stayin Alive from the 12" and the alternate mixes of More Than A Woman (strings in the second verse) and How Deep Is Your Love (louder, distorted guitar in the intro).

    Disco Funk:

Why is it "too bad" that David Shire also produced it?

It shouldn't be Barracuda Hangout because I'm assuming that refers to the guitar music played when Tony and co. are fighting with the Barracudas.

Second Lowdown. I wonder if that's out there somewhere?

on the subject of SNF music: I have a little secret

to share regarding hard to find music aired on TV. I got the idea from "Charlotte's Web", a film with music I loved but never could find in my area. After I bought a stereo TV with input and output jacks on the back, I learned to run an audio cable from the back of the TV into a recording device (a cassette recorder in the olden days, probably a computer now). I could then make audio recordings of anything on TV or VHS, including the musical portions of movies and award shows. These recordings became quite precious to me, especially if they were never commercially available anywhere else. Sure, the quality may not have been great, but it was better than not having the music at all. A good example is TV theme songs: I love Aretha Franklin's electrifying vocal on the theme song from "A Different World", and I'm sure this is the only way I can have it since it only has one verse and I doubt if it will be released commercially. If many of you like that selection from SNF, this is one way you can enjoy it ....

I appreciate the tip, but the song is literally only a few seconds long (though it was certainly enough to inspire me to want to buy the whole song).

Because that means it wasn't recorded for consumption outside of the film. If it had been a Toto production not directly connected to the film, it would be out there on a Toto's greatest hits. The only way one can hear it is if there is a bootlegger out there who got access to the David Shire sessions tapes.

Maybe they (Shire and the film producer(s)) were worried Boz Scaggs would sue if it sounded too much like his Lowdown. I've read that Scaggs was approached and asked to have Lowdown included in SNF, but he turned it down. If that did happen and then the producers of SNF go ahead and use Scaggs' same session musicians and record a track that sounds like Lowdown, I could see them suddenly be worried that Scaggs might sue them. Hence, the short musical sequence (we can't tell if it was supposed to sound like Lowdown from it either) and no credit at the end of the film.

Did anyone ever track down this elusive song? Or at least find out more about it?

Re: Song in Saturday Night Fever

i have a question in regards to the music used for the dvd on the bonus :
the VH1 produced 'behind the music' documentary. There is an extra cut used as background music that is repeatedly played on the documentary. I looked at the credits and it didn't have any track name nor artist.
It is a very symphonic sounding tune reminiscent of the Philly sound with some brass now and then?

Can someone help me with this, is this some track from the disco heydays or new music written especially for this doc???
    :icon_eek:
    thanks in advance,
    Pat

I keep checking to see if anyone discovers the song described in the original post.

Thought I'd give this old thread a bump instead of creating a new one. It's the song that Tony and Annette are practicing to about 30-33 minutes into the movie.
