Man, if you're gonna start a thread about who is and who isn't rumored to be gay in the music industry, I hope it doesn't get too heated!

I wouldn't be surprised if Van was gay. It doesn't ruin my appreciation of his music any less. I imagine most of the members of Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes (even Teddy P) were gay or bi. Or even members of vocal groups like The Temptations and The Stylistics. For sure the lead singer of the Dynamic Superiors was gay. Luther was rumored to be gay. Johnny Gill supposedly was/is Eddie Murphy's lover.

I could go on and on, but I don't know if this topic is too hot for Disco Music.com.

But since you have opened a bigger can of worms .... oh what the hell :P ---- heat this damn website up a bit :P :P ....

Spill the beans DF .... what in the world makes you suggest that the entire Harold Melvin clan (most of ) was gay .... and also The Temptations ???

I don't have any direct evidence. Well, with Harold Melvin, I saw an old clip of them singing Bad Luck on some show and they were doing some really effeminate dancing. I know that may sound like a pretty weak clue, but I've also worked with many gay co-workers and worked in the big city, so my 'gay-dar' is pretty accurate. Its not an exact science, and I've been surprised many times to find out certain people were gay and I didn't even realize it.

The Teddy P thing has been floating around, and some have said he got into that car accident while getting hot and heavy with a man. The Tempts - I'm just throwing it out there. I just assumed some of them may have been gay.

Recent artists like Queen Latifah and Missy Elliot have been rumored to be gay. They even say that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett are gay. Just because someone is gay doesn't mean they don't get married and have children. Robert Reed of Brady Bunch fame married and had a child in the 1950's, but the marriage ended a number of years later. And while he's not music related, they say Tom Cruise is gay. I've heard that rumor for well over a decade now, so when I saw him go mental over Katie Holmes, I knew it was just an act.

Anyway, I'll let other people throw down some names because I don't want to be the only one saying stuff.

Whats this about labeling people as gay
    and straight again
    I am sure both
Teddy P and Luther had a lot of female realtionships
that doesn't mean that they never had realtionships with men

but going as far as saying that they were seeing the same sex on an exclusive basis is a bit far fetched
back at the time of Disco people cared less about labels
Today everything is back to the Freudism
the concept of homosexuality didn't even exsist before the 1800's

I mean some people get attracted to people the character regardless of what gender this person carries on the inside and on the outside

some people here are in dire need to read some
    queer feministic philosophy

this is pure gay militant reviosionist bullshit!!! , and a fine example on how gay militants try to high jack and own up "Disco" music to this day, just because Gays played R&B music in clubs doesn't make it "Gay Music". Rockers didn't like Disco because they were not into dancing, dressing up or spending big bucks on fancy drinks and cover charge, and Disco was destroying their hippie "Rock world", tha's all. And the use of the word "Suck" in the "Disco Sucks" backlash had nothing to do with gayness, it was a common term used in every day life to express dislike or disapproval at the time. Any other interpretation is modern revisionist BS desingned to accomodate political Agenda's of the past and present.

Ps: Your average Rocker didn't even know of the existance of Gay Discos, especially in the mid west, this was at the time (mid to late 70's) a deep subculture out of sight and hidden in the Warehouse distrits of big industrial cities phenomenun.

Oh, come on! That's some story to have come up with. I know that lots of guys hate to wear suits and ties but I didn't see them band together, throwing their dress-up clothes onto a football field and setting them ablaze. And keep in mind, that gays were not the ones to label disco as 'fag music' or 'music for queers'.

And 'gay militants'?! In the 25 years that I have been out, I have yet to see anything that resembles a 'gay militant'.

I’m sorry to hear you think so, as I assure you my opinions are based on first hand real life experiences and not on revisionist books or online articles. You’re obviously one of the millions of victim of a well coordinated campaign that long ago began to twist the “facts” with future political gain in mind.

Maybe the words of one of biggest promoters of the “Disco Suck” campaign will change your misguided views???

“ I gotta to be honest with you, it wasn’t so much about the music as it was about the life style, the whole white three piece suit thing. In my mind when I think about what Disco demolition was about, it was about eighteen to twenty four year old disenfranchised Rock guys like myself not wanting to have to look like that to get laid.”

Steve Dahl (organizer of the Disco Demolition night)

Quote Taken from a Rolling stone article

    www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/pageid/rs.Home/pageregion/single1/id/6294549+disco+sucks+news&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=2]Rolling stone article[/url]

Even the club drugs of preference were different, Rockers liked qualuds (sp) and grass while Disco heads prefered Blow and speed pills.

And keep in mind, that gays were not the ones to label disco as 'fag music' or 'music for queers'.
Disco began to be considered gay music by many around the early 80’s as “High energy” music was almost exclusively spun in the ever increasing number of Gay clubs, because some of the *old* high BPM count Euro Disco of yester year was still played in this clubs some of this music was also dubbed "Gay disco" by the youngsters that came of age during the 80’s.

hey, it takes two to tango right? besides is the least I can do to set the record straight (no pun intended :P ) since this exclusive association of Disco Music with gayness is so prevalent in today's society that I hardly ever tell anyone I was a DJ to avoid the arguments and the rolling eye balls.

I know this is hijacking a hijacked thread, LOL!, but going back to the Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes thing, I think I discovered what made him suddenly go 'ga ga' over her. Around the same time, there were rumors of him and Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 being an item. Sure, they could have just been rumors, but if you remember how Tom Cruise behaved, it seemed like he was trying really hard to look like he was in love with someone of the opposite sex. In other words, he was over compensating. To make things even more weird, 'Katie Holmes' is an anagram for 'Tom Likes A He' (I didn't come up with that). Nicole Kidman is also rumored to be gay, and her long time friend Naomi Watts is more than just a friend. They say a picture says a thousand words, and you can see in these ones they seem to be more than just friends just from the body language:

this is pure gay militant reviosionist bullshit!!! , and a fine example on how gay militants try to high jack and own up "Disco" music to this day .....
.... I don't understand . Who are these "gay militants" and what's in it for them to " high jack disco" .... as you put it ????
just because Gays played R&B music in clubs doesn't make it "Gay Music".
true! ... tell that to the "disco sucks " crowd .
Rockers didn't like Disco because they were not into dancing, dressing up or spending big bucks on fancy drinks and cover charge,
    ..... that's funny ..... from 1976 thru 1979 they did exactly that ...
and Disco was destroying their hippie "Rock world", tha's all.
    that's true !!!
And the use of the word "Suck" in the "Disco Sucks" backlash had nothing to do with gayness, it was a common term used in every day life to express dislike or disapproval at the time.
I never thought about the choice of the word "sucks' .... but now that you bring it up .... ya, the use of that particular word is really suspicious too !!!
Any other interpretation is modern revisionist BS desingned to accomodate political Agenda's of the past and present. ..... What agenda gets accomodated by this exactly ?????
nope ....the straight clubs were just as popular as the gay ones until late 1979 when word spread like wildfire that disco was for fags ..... you know , ... like those Village People guys. ( I think the Village People's high visability played into this a lot ) And that's when there was this mass exodus from the clubs.

Or .... if we're to have it your way Mixmachine .... suddenly all the straight guys that had been going to the clubs , all woke up in 1979 and said , "Wait a minute ...what the heck am I doing , going to discos ??? I just remembered ... I only like rock music !! I'm a rocker !! Disco sucks !! "
    :P

Ps: Your average Rocker didn't even know of the existance of Gay Discos, especially in the mid west, this was at the time (mid to late 70's) a deep subculture out of sight and hidden in the Warehouse distrits of big industrial cities phenomenun.
Exactly ...and at that stage ... when they were ignorant of such things ... disco was cool with them .... that is until word finally got around about such things as those big city fag clubs .... in 1979 ...again just like I originally said .... .that's when the word got put out by the anti-disco crowd that pssst... disco was fag music

I wasn't stating here that disco music was gay music. That's a different discussion for a different time. I'm stating that in 1979 there became the perception that disco music was gay music. ( An intentional perception fueled by the rocker crowd )

    Big difference ....

Well .... you only have the uptight , narrow-minded , straight , "disco sucks" crowd to thank for that !!!

To try to blame hillbilly behavior on "gay militants " .... now that's revisionist BS :P

    And ...
I agree , those assholes and their ******* offspring , still exist in today's society to this day !

Only in the U.S.A. fellas, only in the U.S.A.

Outside of the U.S. Gayness wasn't ever part of the Disco equation.
