Re: So how big is yours? (Disco record collection)

    My collectioin is fairly modest.
I have about 400 vinyl LPs, 300 12" disco singles, and about 50-60 Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs(MFSL), Nautilus, CBS Masterworks half-speed mastered LPs, and 1 direct-to-disk LP. My piece de resistance, is a my 10 disk set of MFSL Beatles, and a factory sealed unopened copy of MFSL UHQ(Ultra-high quality)Beatles Magical Mystery Tour LP.

In all my years here I've never seen this thread before!! The focus of my collection is 1976-1979 and I have a few thousand 12"s and LP's. There are quite a few 'doubles' and in the case of Evelyn Chamapgne King's Shame - a quintuple!! My CD collection is more eclectic with around 1,000 (although I did have a fair few stolen during a recent burglary)

My music collection is small by the standards of this group:

888 vinyl albums/45s of which 241 are disco (27%) and 340 CDs of which 97 are disco (28%).

My vinyl albums were boxed up for 11 years due to lacks of storage space. Way back in 2001 I took them out just to make sure that they were all in good shape, and they were. I used to make cassettes from my vinyl so they are all in excellent condition. Never owned any pre-recorded cassettes or 8-tracks.

I cataloged them using Microsoft Excel and Access. It was a tedious process. I entered them first into Excel, then exported that info into Access giving me a good database.

Wow, this is been an interesting thread to read and one that seems to have continued over a couple of years.

My collection consists of the following:
    • 3000+ Albums & 12" singles (lost count at 3000)
    • 500+ 45" singles
    • 350-500 CD's
    • 2500 mp3's on my external hard drive
I put all of my vinyl into storage about 2.5 years back when I had to move in with friend due to not working. Everything is stored in standard 2 cubic foot cardboard movers boxes.

As for insuring my collection, I had to pay a little bit extra to include it as part of my overall policy. Their only request was to provide them with a list of the collection and they would cover replacement value if I ever had to replace them (which we all know would be virtually impossible nowadays).

I'm cataloguing everything in access and entered about 6000 titles up to now.
My big problem is that I had to move from my old house to a bigger one because my house was flooded with vinyl. I plan to set up a "temple" room dedicated to music. Hope this will be soon.

Any tips on cataloguing in Access? I need to get mine in order but I pull groups of them out for djing and neglect to reorder them.
Last count I had 1500 or so (we counted one pile and eyed the rest) but probably have around 2000 now as I have acquired a couple friends' collections.

45's? Not sure, how many fit in those 9" boxes? I have about 6 of those. Not many 45's because I only started collection in '96 and didn't have much use for the short players if I could get something on LP or 12".

I need to get rid of a TON of the electronic stuff I have, so much junk in there.

As Nicky mentioned somewhere that he was re-organizing his collection, I thought it would be fun to start a topic on collection size, and how to store it. Or anything else related to the issue of where to leave all our stuff, or negotiate with loved ones about more space requirements.

To kick off, my collection holds about 1,200 vinyl's (LP is the majority, but there are also about 450 12"s and perhaps 75 7"). In terms of CD's we are roughly at 1,400 now, broken down in singles (about 500), and the rest of them regular CD's (including double/2CD sets).

The records are stored standing in a cupboard that holds just about what I have. The CD's are in cheapo IKEA cupboards that hold 200 each. This means that there are now growing stacks of 'fallen-out-of-favor' CD's across the house.

I have both albums and CD's sorted by artist and/or producer. This is becoming a real pain in the you-know-what. What to do with Michael Jackson or Frank Sinatra who were both produced by Quincy Jones, who also has his own releases. I think I am going to have to go alphabetical as well!

I also have a database but it is still rather incomplete with regards to vinyl.

My wife has no problem with either the amount or growth of this collection. Even though her musical taste is more pop/rock/jazz. One factor is that she is 9 years younger than I am so she missed 'da days' completely! Her hero's were Wham, Duran Duran and she still loves Deacon Blue!

    So what's your story?
I store my precious records in groups of how valuable they are to ME. My treasured records by Paul Sabu, my Prince bootlegs with Miles Davis and George Clinton, Led Zeppelin, Carole King and Fleetwood Mac bootlegs, my "Charlotte's Web original animated motion picture soundtrack" (which I have a picture disc copy of), my long out of print funk albums by the Sweat Band, Fatback, Parliament, War and others. They're always protected from the sun and dust, and don't even THINK of asking to borrow them. I mistakingly bragged about these at work and one of my co-workers asked to borrow one (and he asked in front of other people). Against my better judgement I lent it to him and he left it on a shuttle bus........

Re: So how big is yours? (Disco record collection)

I never counted how many records or cds or cassettes I have, but they keep growing in number. I can estimate I have approximately 9 metres of 12"/LPs, 1-2 metres of 45s, about 200 tape cassettes (most of them are tape copies I made of the vinyls I have, something I've been meaning to switch over to minidisc). Roughly 3-4000 cds. VHS tapes and dvds, way too many (thousands).
I ran out of space ages ago, however I had a new attic to populate (the worst environment to store them, I know...) and I designed and built custom cupboards to maximize the use of space.

Btw, has anyone ever noticed George Segal's vinyl collection in his hallway in the Streisand movie "The Mirror Has Two Faces"? When Jeff Bridges goes to his place frantic after Babs wants sex from him, it can be seen very neatly tucked away in a bit bookshelfy thing, however I kinda criged at it because about 1/4 of the record sticks out (discoloration etc, argg).
