I usually use fairly inexpensive book cases with adjustable shelves although I try to stay within 42" width so the shelves don't sag so much.
may I ask what most of you are storing your albums in these days? I have an enclosed "album case"; it's about 4.5 feet long. I've sat a turntable, mixer, CD player and cassette recorder on top of it, and I keep my most frequently played (and most valuable) albums in it. But after 20 years it's falling apart and I think they stopped making these after CDs became popular. I'm aware they still make entertainment centers that hold albums, but most of them only hold too small an amount for my needs. Suggestions? And before suggesting something extravagant or expensive, please keep in mind my name has a definite purpose...

What I would do is just get more bookcases custom-designed for this purpose. I have this problem with my cds. With cds I would like to have shelves wrap around the room with very little space between shelves. I have several bookcases and it works very well. Even the cd shelves do sag just a bit so maybe having an 8 foot long shelf may not be the best.
Sauder had the best cd storage units but the Oscar units are not made of real wood and are not specifically designed for cds only. Thus there is some room between the shelves.
