And all this time I thought it was because Diana's hair was too big for the both of them to be in the studio at the same time. :)

Finally I found the answer :D :D :D
Ross was pregnant with her first child during the time of recording in early 1971, and Gaye refused to stop smoking his marijuana in the studio when she was around.
And all this time I thought it was because Diana's hair was too big for the both of them to be in the studio at the same time. :)

According to Marvin's biography by David Ritz, he was as big a diva as her by then. Plus she was married to his boss/brother-in-law Berry Gordy. So it must have been pretty stormy in there...
However, Marvin shows in the book his appreciation for Diana (which he mentions as "Diane" on purpose). For example, envying her sense of entrepeneuring and career-making (he saw himself as pretty bad at that).
Diana and Berry were never "married"--but her first child Rhonda was fathered by Berry. Her first husband was Bob Silberstein and they "pretended" Rhonda was his child, even though she looked exactly like Berry Gordy. Later, Miss Ross revealed that, in fact, Berry was the father. Silberstein fathered her two other daughters, Tracee & Chudney (what were they thinking with that name?? did they mean "Chutney"??? was she inebriated on Indian cuisine??). :-? :o :-? .and then Miss Ross had 2 boys with Norwegian shipping magnate, Arne Naess, who fell off a mountain and was killed after he divorced her.![]()
Wow Marky. I didn't know that. I just assumed their long affair was public and legal (in photos they seemed to be always together).
Guess their parting ways didn't affect Berry's state so much then :)
