What years do you equate disco to be invloved in? In other words, what years do you believe it started and ended? I used to call what I now know to be hi-nrg, disco. Well, a few friends (disco heads) of mine corrected me on this all too common misunderstanding. Well, what are your thoughts?

Actually, this is not a misunderstanding I still consider Disco almost any danceable music from 1972 through the mid 80s.

Just as Rock has Doo Wop, heavy metal, glam, alternative... Disco has Hi-NRG, ItaloDisco, freestyle, early house... They are branches off the Disco tree. Disco is dance music. Dance music is Disco.

I kinda go along with Bernie. Others, especially from other countries will I'm sure vary this by two or three years.
    Find them and destroy them!

I didn't think of it like that when I posted that question. How very true!

    Dear Friends!
I think, we all know, that Disco never died,
but it wasn´t so massive anymore, because
of some ugly politics in the US. If you
are watching the Scene in Canada or Europe
(esp.Italy), there was a complete other
    story.
Disco is so much like PhillySound, Munich-
    Disco, SpaceDisco, LatinDisco (not Italo-
    Disco!), BlackDisco or DiscoFunk, DiscoJazz,
    DiscoSwing, etc. etc.
It can be compared with HouseMusic from
    DeepHouse, AcidHouse, Techno, DiscoHouse,
    FilterDisco, LatinoHouse, ItaloHouse,
and so on. The only wrong thing with House
nowadays is, that the development stopped
and the last trends were FilterDisco and
    Electro(esp. in Germany).
The difference between House and Disco:
1)Disco has been lived with all the power
    of the people.
2)House is like Voyeurism of today.
Now the DJ´s are so into mixing, that the
most of them play mostly instrumental ver-
sions, and that is really boring. It is
sometimes a real exciting feeling, it the
    mix doesn´t function!!!

I would reckon about the same.

I would start from around 1970 with James Brown's "Sex Machine" and run through until the mid/late '80's.

I would say the last disco record that I bought was Harleqiun (sic) Four with "Set it Off". A massive record that I consider bridged the gap between the past and the future, and appealed to both crowds....

    Sirius,

This is exactly the same what I think!!!
Today, house try to recycle disco, but in general the result is a pretty boring "boom boom beat"!
    IMHO, of course.

    Peace

I always thought that the disco era went from 1974 to about 1981-82. But I know that disco paved the way for all dance music to come since then.

Proper, and I mean really dancefloor oriented disco music spanned from 1976 to 1982. Before this point the music could only really be called danceable R&B and after that things changed and the 'dance' sound came along.

Before 1976 not everything played in hip discos was r'n'b, there was latin-type stuff like Barrabas & Euro stuff like Crystal Grass.
