1950's Horror Movies

Years ago they used to show a lot of 50's era horror films on Saturday afternoon. I became hooked on these as a child and couldn't wait to see what was going to be on next week.

Two I remember are "Not of This Earth" with Beverly Garland (she now runs a hotel). It was about an alien who wore dark glasses and when he removed them he had no eyeballs and you would die if you looked into his eyes. The other movie I recall was "The Hypnotic Eye" which was about a hypnotist who hypnotizes women to disfigure themselves.

I eventually discovered disco and my 50's horror movie watching fell by the wayside.

Any fans of these movies or 50's horror in general?

I recently discovered two great ones on DVD that I never saw before, the original 1963 production of "the Haunting" directed by Robert Wise, a much more effective version than the remake without the help of any special effects wizardry, just terrific camera work , and "The Night of the Hunter" with Robert Mitchum and the only film directed by Charles Laughton, this one apparently was hardly played at all on TV and shelved because of the taboo subject matter, especially for 1955 and thereabouts, this one is creepy, specially Mitchum, I read Laughton was so widely criticized that he went into deep depression :o and never directed again, now is considered a masterpiece by many fans of the genre.

I also enjoyed watching the original uncut DVD version of “Cape Fear” (62) , although in this case the 1991 Scorcese/De Niro/Nolte version is just as good, in some ways maybe better, also discovered the original “Manchurian Candidate” another film that was shelved for decades and I never saw before, this one is well done and begs to be watched a few times.

Growing up everything on tv was crap to my parents. Well they watched it but I couldn't. Everything I watched was pre-recorded on VHS. And I do mean EVERYTHING!! My favorite things to sneak and watch from under the pool table in the livingroom while my pops was hanging out with my mom was Alfred Hitchcock. I knew when that music came on out there it was my cue to make my way under the pool table and lay silent and still just to get the **** scared outta me. All the so called horror movies they make nowadays is real crap. I still love the old horror films. Who beats Boris Karloff as Frankenstein? He even creeped me out being the voice of The Grinch in the original Dr. Seuss's How The Grinch Stole Christmas. No actor nowadays scares me beyond the role he or she plays in the film.... 8)
