Hey, I hadn't even seen the new top 500 was in progress. God, this is going to be sleepless nights. Tossing and turning I wiggle in my sleep... (name that band! how do you do these smiley thingies?).
Well, I have just added my Top 25 to the list, Bernie.
I was very ruthless and compiled an absolute SHORT shortlist… But that STILL came to over sixty tunes!! So it is quite difficult to cut it down to 25, but I am pretty happy with my final list.
The top two are the same as those in my previous submission for Maarten's list.
But overall, I have tended to move away from the Eurodisco-type sound into a more funky / soulful sound. A good example: I have replaced Munich Machine with GQ.
I have kept off the jazz and the early Seventies funk stuff and have concentrated mainly on '75 - '79, with the bulk of my choices coming from '77 - the year I got into disco music, and, naturally, the year that holds the best memories for me.
Bernie, are you going to publish individual member's lists, so we can see what people have picked? Or do you object if we post what we have listed directly on the Board?
Thanks for giving us the chance to compile our top 25 once again! I certainly enjoyed compiling mine and am looking forward to the results!![]()
If it moves - funk it!!

OK, my initial list covers 92 selections from around 5,100 tracks in my collection (according to my database).
And now for my next trick... selecting 25. AAAGGGHHHH!!!!
What is interesting is that I have several styles, such as
- something that I call 'real' disco (uh oh here we go with labeling): Voyage, Cerrone, Gino Soccio, Silver Convention, Lipps Inc., Nightlife Unlimited, etc.
- something that is best described as 'smooth disco' (huh?) - Change, Gregg Diamond, TS Monk, Starpoint, Mtume, Norman Connors, etc.
- classics such as Chic, Donna S, etc.
How do I make a sensible list out of this jumble?? Perhaps I need to work under several names/ISP's hahaha. I'll get to the smiley thingies later - I need to chop and edit and re-edit and change my mind a hundred times! Give me a break (name that singer!)

Jim--
Just wanted to tell you that your list is my favorite of all the ones I've read so far! I'm sure I'll be posting at least a few of the same songs!
\"...a once in a lifetime feeling that returns every week...\"
oh no! i'm going to have to stop reading everyone's list...it's reminding me of too many other songs. as i'm compiling my list, i was using what i have as 12 inch singles. but now i'm seeing other possibilities. how could i forget:
pockets- come go with me
gladys knight- baby don't change your mind
donald byrd- dominoes
and anyones version of "always there" like side effect or ronnie laws.
The list I submitted is:
1. My Forbidden Lover - Chic
2. I Want Your Love - Chic
3. Rock With You - Michael Jackson
4. Murder On The Dancefloor - Sophie Ellis Bextor
5. So You Wanna Be A Star - Mtume
6. From East to West - Voyage
7. I Don't Want You Back - Ramona Brooks
8. Never Can Say Goodbye - Gloria Gaynor
9. The Real Thing - Brothers Johnson
10. Cocomotion - El Coco
11. Ain't No Stopping Us Now - McFadden and Whitehead
12. Give Me The Night - George Benson
13. What 'Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin' - Stephanie Mills
14. Perfect Love Affair - Constellation Orchestra
15. What Am I Gonna Do With You? - Barry White
16. Young Hearts Run Free - Candi Staton
17. Under Your Spell - Phyllis Hyman
18. Lady (You Bring Me Up) - The Commodores
19. I'm Coming Out - Diana Ross
20. Stomp - Brothers Johnson
21. This Time Baby - Jackie Moore
22. He's The Greatest Dancer - Sister Sledge
23. You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine - Lou Rawls
24. Runaway - Loleatta Holloway
25. Cosmic Girl - Jamiroquai
I want to thank maarten for having called my attention months ago to the re-release of the 1980 Mtume CD with that great track "So You Wanna Be A Star", which I included in the above list. So maarten that makes 2 votes for that. I like jazz_pilgrim's list very much because it has "Young Hearts Run Free" and "Cocomotion" just like mine. I also like "Let Me Show You [the Way to Go]" by the Jacksons (1976) and "You Know How To Love Me" by Phyllis Hyman (1979), but they didn't make my list.

It's always interesting to see what people pick. Thus far, I see very little of what I'd pick. No value judgement there, just different taste. My problem lies in that I want to pay homage to the early years and those who pioneered DISCO-BUT my fave dancing years came later. So can I leave out The Trammps or Andrea True to make room for Space and Rick James? It's impossible.
The Troc years for me were mid 79 through 83--so there are so many that deserve mentioning.
I've been thinking about playing everything for a little "Dance Test"- BUT , do I really have the time? Hmmmm. Maybe, I'll just put everythng in a hat and pick that way. Or sit this one out. (AND BITCH later, of course). NO I can't do that. I've seen "Cocomotion" listed several times already!!!! DANGER: WILL ROBINSON!!!!!! I MUST STOP IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Well, I picked a mix of what were my personal faves and what I felt were the most "important" tracks. On 2002-08-01 12:20, markydefad wrote:

Well, "Masquerade" is my fave El Coco track, but that's not even danceable, so no go there. Afrodesia is next, but it wasn't a single, so few others are likely to vote for it. Of my three remaining faves under that name (Mondo Disco, Let's Get It Together, and Cocomotion), I felt that Cocomotion was the best pick because of the great bass line, unusual chord progression and structure, and besides, it's a lot less repetitive than the other two.I've seen "Cocomotion" listed several times already!!!!

But Graham,
"Cocomotion" STILL has those cheesy, inspid, annoying, cooing, baby-talking vocals!!!! ARRRRGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!

I swear this musta been early Kathie Lee Gifford (when she was still Kathie Lee Epstein) and her sorority sisters, Buffy & Muffy, who supplied the vocals. "YES", it annoys me that much!!!!!!!!
This had to be before she did the more sophisticated "Only My Pillow Knows" song, right?

Not everybody can be as good as me!!
Seriously though, I agree with you about the difficulty of narrowing down the choice to 25! I picked out a lot of tracks from my favourite dancing year - 1977 - plus some other of my dance classics. I am very happy with my list - It is 100% ME!!
I have treated this list as Top 25 Disco Trax only (I have been very strict!), and not my all-time favourite music.
My all time Top 10 (everything) would read as folows:
Roy Ayers - Running Away
El Coco - Cocomotion
David Ruffin - Walk Away From Love
Donald Byrd - Dominoes
Lonnie Liston Smith - Expansions
Willie Bobo - Always There
Maze - Joy And Pain
William DeVaughn - Be Thankful For What You've Got
Pharoah Saunders - Got To Have Freedom
O'Jays - I'll Never Forget You (1967)
Looking forward to seeing your list, Marky! I like the diversity of the tracks that people pick - otherwise it would be boring!

Jeff H: I didn't see the 1986 cut-off reference prior to my submission, but I consider that arbitrary, because there were no real disco songs during 1985 and 1986, but there were some real disco songs after 1993. "Murder on the Dancefloor" and "Cosmic Girl" use real violins, real guitars, real bass, and are just as disco as anything from the '70s. I consider them valid submissions but if Bernie tells me to substitute those two with something else from the original disco era I can do that. Do what you want, but I don't understand why you would want to carry on the anti-disco attitude that disco is dead when it's clear that there are some non-sampled, non-electronic songs from recent years which can be considered pure disco (other examples: "Canned Heat" by Jamiroquai, "I Don't Understand It" by Ultra Nate, and "Should I Let Him Go?" by The Company - real violins, cellos, and violas on all those too.) They are more disco than the techno "I Feel Love" from 1977 or the Hi-NRG "Boogie Woogie Dancin' Shoes" from 1979 or just about anything after 1981. Someone else submitted "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper, but that's not disco. Maybe some of the new disco songs don't measure up, in some folks' opinion, to the disco songs of older times, but at least someone out there is making this sort of music, and to cut it off at 1986 without restarting it at 1994 is like telling jazz lovers they have to tell their favorite jazz songs from the 1930s-1960s and can't include anything from after that period because it wasn't the "prime" of jazz (according to Wynton Marsalis and the "Jazz" PBS documentary), even though swing had a modern "revival" and jazz continued in many forms. If you want disco to be dead, then go ahead and ignore the latest material and let heavy metal, trance, and rap rule the day. JussiK told us some weeks ago that he likes "Murder on the Dancefloor", and I do too.
Why not? It was a great 12".On 2002-07-31 20:09, paul wrote:

Arguably the greatest 12' single of all time if you also include Erotic city. Fortunatly I have the 12" versions of BOTH on CD! and not from NapsterLet's Go Crazy?
Delight peaked at #14 on the Disco chartI even have trouble with Rappers Delight but well, it was a club favorite during the disco era. Oh well, as they so in So Cal, whatever dude!
Discosavvy,
I think many of us haven't heard these new Disco songs. Since Napster disappeared and LA radio went Mexican--I have no way to sample this stuff. I've seen the good reviews, though. If I see a CD by that Sophie Ellis whatever chick, I'd pick it up.
I'm always curious. I've just been BURNED (disappointed) soooo many times that I'm reluctant to buy CD singles anymore. The remixes always SUCK and I feel I shoulda just listened to the single version on the regular CD and accepted the fact that THAT was the definitive version. The remixes are only gonna deconstruct what I liked to begin with.
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
markydefad: It's good to hear from you again, and I welcome anyone's opinions. You are absolutely right that it's hard for most people to find out about what songs sound like until after they're purchased. But sometimes there are short samples at online stores around the world so I often rely on those before I make a purchase. I used AudioGalaxy for a few months and that helped also, especially when I was researching which songs from 1980 and 1981 are disco-styled and which are not. Also Sophie Ellis Bextor has an official website where her videos and songs can be heard. I don't like all her songs, and I agree with the person who said that "Groovejet" can get tiring after a while, but "Murder on the Dancefloor" is a winner and is a fully original composition rather than a sample of an old disco song. I also agree with you that remixes usually aren't so hot and that the originals are best. I didn't like the remixes of the songs by Jamiroquai and Sophie as much as their originals. But some remixes work well, like the remix of JLo's "Love Don't Cost A Thing"; the original was boring, but the Full Intention remix was more catchy. It was really refreshing to hear that remix, as well as Groovejet, in the midst of all the robotic techno and trance stuff many of us despise. It caught me by surprise the first time I heard it, I think in August 2001. I got the same feeling in 1998 when Cher's "Strong Enough" became a pop hit for a week and actually got some radio play; I was thinking: what happened here, someone revived disco? And that caused me to look for more songs like that, and thru extensive research, listening, and buying, I've found a lot of songs made after 1993 that could be called disco. Brits get to hear these songs on top 40 radio a lot more than Americans. I have the results of my research posted on the Web but Bernie has a rule against posting URLs within messages, so interested parties can explore the address at my signature.
Jim: I love "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun?" too, but most people don't consider it to be disco-styled. By the way, I see you listed "Last Dance" by Donna Summer, which is a good song. Did you watch "American Idol" on FOX TV the other night where female singer Ryan Starr gave a rendition of it? The audience got on their feet and had a great time.
D.S.,
Ryan performed "Last Dance" on Tuesday but got voted off Wednesday, so go figure. She be gone.
I'm liking this show a lot. Didn't see the early shows, but I've watched since they narrowed it down to 10.
I don't know the names of the contestants off the top of my head but my faves are 1) the black girl who sang "If I were Your Woman" --she's always great. 2) white chick from Texas who sang "Don't Play That Song" and " A Natural woman" 3) black chick who sang "Ain't No Sunshine". The others are mostly good (the 2 guys are iffy) BUT not gonna win, IMHO.
Anyone else watching this or "Big Brother"???
I love them both!!!!

Marky--
I have watched American Idol occasionally but never for an entire episode: I get disgusted by the sound of so many young women trying to sound Just Like Cristina. What hath Mariah wrought?!!The guys are even worse: all that faux-sensitive boy band crap.
My favorite has been Nikki McKibbin (sp?), since she doesn't seem to be trying to copy The Latest Thing and just rocks out in her own old-fashioned way.
\"...a once in a lifetime feeling that returns every week...\"
Jeffy,
Nikki is interesting BUT as SIMON SAID after her Pat Benatar "Heartbreaker"--it was a decent copycat performance. I do like her though. She just need to pick the right song and give it a unique spin. Doing a note by note copy of Pat Benatar ain't gonna win that contest. I was amazed that Justin (the teen dream) scored so low, but he WAS NOT up to covering Donny Hathaway's "Some Day We'll All Be Free". Big mistake. He should do a (?) Peter Frampton song and cool the cutesy scream-begging ****.
The 2 black girls are beautiful and classy, though and the Texas chick has a really soulful voice. The worst thing is those dweeb tool hosts!!!! Ghastly!!! Ryan Seacrest is rumored to be a queen, BTW.
