    Paging Dr. Buzzard ......

    *****

..... "A pair of Haitians in the Bronx, Stony Browder Jr. and his brother Thomas (who renamed himself August Darnell), formed Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band in 1974 with singer Cory Daye as the centerpiece. Her voice was light and limber, given to tripping scat rather than roars and moans, and the group's music was an effortless blend of big-band swing, jump blues, show tunes, and Caribbean boogie ......."

I love Dr. Buzzard and Cher Chez le Femme. I always found the combination of that tune and Cory Daye's voice "intriguing" (for lack of a better word). She reminds me of the adventure or mystery or enticement of a newly met dance partner and a one night stand. Maria Mulduar and "Midnight At The Oasis" had a similar effect though no where near the same degree as Cory Daye.

    Corey Daye

Man, what a beautiful voice. It's hard to believe that voices like hers dont go further, another example is Taylor Dayne, I feel she should be bigger than Mariah and Whitney. But As for Corey......."Tommy Matolla, lives on the road....." Got those great sounds in my collection also with "Green Light/ Pow Wow....."Gonna have a pow wow, pass the peace pipe"...........

Dr. Buzzard had a short run. Their first album in 1976 was superb. The 2nd album in 1978 was good. But the 3rd (1979) and 4th (1984) albums were disappointing. Only the first has been released on CD.

    Paging Dr. Buzzard.....

Here's a website I found regarding August Darnell

    http://www.rainmanrecords.com/cgi-bin/rain/index.html

Spinning off from the acclaimed DR. BUZZARD's ORIGINAL SAVANNAH BAND, band leader AUGUST DARNELL, created KID CREOLE AND THE COCONUTS to tour, and tour they have! The band's presentation, both audio and visual, radiates from the stage. The style is pure-we're having a party and you're invited! Dressed in zoot suits and variations of Barbarella, they blend Geroge Clinton and basic funk rhythms with big band, swing, pop and soul songs. Their creation of the conceptual character Mimi and Kid Creole's search for her became the basis for a Granada TV special broadcast entitled, "There's Something Wrong in Paradise" Kid Creole and the Coconuts are ready to dazzle their worldwide fans with a new show and CD. With a catalog of Top Ten Hits in England, TOO COOL TO CONGA continues a tradition of outstanding music.

Whoohoo! I just bought a vinyl copy of Cory and Me. Admittedly, I only heard Pow Wow a couple times on radio stations BITD but listening to it in full system sound, Pow Wow WOW! What a floor-stomper!

This is just one of many albums that I've bought in the past week from one of our biggest used record/cd stores that's closing it's doors after 25 years in business. The album is in A-1 perfect condition and paid 90 cents. :D

Sad the store is closing but happy for the added treasures.

Green Light was the other big hit from that record. Both of those 12 inch singles got heavy play in clubs, and on the radio in NYC in 1979. Good stuff!

As far as I'm aware, she did the female vocals for the whole of the first two albums, which I have. So the answer is almost certainly "Yes".

My CD of the first album was released in late 1988 or early 1989. I purchased it in 1989. The CD notes that it was digitally remastered in August, 1988. (BMG/RCA catalog# 1504-2-R)

The song "Cherchez Le Femme/Se Si Bon" is such a sad song that it makes you happy! I realize it doesn't make sense. Listening to the lyrics will tell a sad tale (one the the lyrics "He's got no woman and no home!"), but the song itself will make you happy since it sounds nice. The song itself mixes in with disco along with jazz and Latin music making it an easy song to listen and grooving to the melody. It would be something that Gloria Estefan & The Miami Machine would do during the 1980s.

I could swear that back in '76 I heard longer versions of "Cherchez Le Femme" and "I'll Play The Fool" on the radio. I haven't heard them since and have never read any mention of them on this site or anywhere else. A case of faulty musical memory on my part I'm sure. Dr. Buzzard was a brief brilliant flash of talent and originality. The first album was a true classic. We are still discussing it 30 years later.

The CD was still sort a big deal back in '88. The record companies were very slow in releasing their catalog stuff on CD. I bought my first CD player the year before. Maybe this Dr. Buzzard CD was released later in overseas markets. What label were they on in the U.K.? I don't know if they were a big nationwide hit in the US or just big in places like NYC & LA.

There were rumors going around at the time that RCA wanted to hide the fact that Dr. Buzzard first became popular among gay clubgoers. They felt it would hurt sales in the broader disco market which included a lot of staight ethnic males. (Politically incorrect translation: RCA was worried that any kind of a 'gay' association would hurt sales among Hispanics, Italian-Americans and African-Americans.)

In 2002, I attended SAE(School of Audio Engineering) in New York City. The Head of Academia and my main teacher was Jim Bonnefond.

If you look on Dr. Buzzard's first album, Jim was the Associate Engineer. This was his first job as an engineer. He was given the title of Associate Engineer (as opposed to Assistant Engineer) because band producer Tommy Mottola(who later went on to head Sony Music and marry Mariah Carey) and album producer, Sandy Linzer, felt Jim had made very big contributions to the recording sessions.

Jim went on to be the Head/Chief Engineer for Kool and the Gang, working from the "Ladies Night" album through all their 80's stuff ("Celebration", "Fresh", "Get Down On It", "Joanna", "Big Fun" etc).

When I would talk to him about the "good 'ol days" he spoke with pride about doing the Dr. Buzzards album. As for his work with Kool and the Gang, he felt great that this group could make the transition from a '70's group to follow up with even greater success in the '80's. Not many musical acts could do that and he was an essential part of that transition.
