The term "gay disco" refers to the music played in the gay clubs from the early to late 80`s... It really "kicked in" around 1982/1983 when the sound that emerged in gay discos/clubs started to be termed "Boystown/HI-NRG".... I believe it was called "gay disco" as this new genre of dance music originated and was predominantly popular in the "underground" gay club scene only. During 1984/1985 many of these "gay disco" records became "crossover" pop hits and appeared in the UK national pop music charts and were also played in more commercial club venues as well... By 85/early 86 STOCK/AITKEN & WATERMAN adopted this sound and marketed it to a wider, mainstream audience - by this time the term "gay disco" seemed to have disappeared....
Hope this answers your question...
