Given that I wouldn't ever guess one of your lyrics quizzes (a language barrier, probably), I come with a similar idea that don't know about language barriers: a sample quiz.
It goes like this: one person names a specific part of a well-known song and the others have to guess which record is sampled on that bit.
I will begin with an easy one: the first four bars of Massive Attack's "Protection". They come from a real classic... and of course, it's forbidden to check out those small-written sample credits!

Well, I guess it would help if you've ever heard a record by Massive Attack to participate in this quiz. That leaves me out!

Well, I've got all the Massive Attack CD's. I'm listening to "Protection" (vocals by Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl) BUT I have no idea what song is sampled. And, truthfully, I've looked at the credits and I don't see any sample listed for that song.

Nano, am I nuts or what???!!!

He might be talking about one of the remixes. I don't know the group, but CDNow lists 5 remixes + a 7" edit. I played the sample they had of the lp version, sounded like Des'Ree on bad 'ludes'.

Marky, I told you not to look!
Yes, I'm talking the original version and maybe it's not credited, but I'm sure where that beat belongs. I'm talking of the backbeat that begins the song and stays during all its length. But just the drum! You can hear it alone in the first four bars of the song.
And Jeff, you can check CDNow for that matter.
Maybe you guys need a hint?

I don't see any guessings so here's a hint. Now, you were playing for a Motown CD collection but now the prize is a tape of the opening ceremony of the USA soccer World Cup of 1994 (disco value: at some point Diana Ross kicks a penalty and sends the ball off the field ).
The bit sampled is featured at the very beginning of the original song, which is a real classic from the mid 70's. Now, these guys of Massive Attack play it a bit slower and with a little echo. But it's the same drum track.
Maybe you need the name of the drummer... it's Jabo Starks.

OK, this is not working so I will give all of you a last hint. Now you're playing for a worn-up Laura Branigan T-shirt.
This same track was sampled by EnVogue in their song "Never gonna get it".
Still NOBODY guesses what I'm talking about?

Nano, all I know is that Jabo Starks did play drums to James Brown in the early, maybe mid 70's. :???:

    That's all I know.

    Peace

You're right on track, Blax. Now you have to compare the first seconds of "Protection" with the beginnings of old JB tracks. Or wait until tomorrow...

OK, I'm tired of this ****. The song is...

    (drum roll)

    "The Payback"!!!!!!

Yes buddies, listen to the beginning of James Brown's hit, just the first drum bars, then drop it and put the first drum bars of Massive Attack's "Protection". Yes, I'm sure and pride myself on my ear. Of course you can comment but from looking at this thread I don't have many hopes...
