Take the family to a Yankees baseball game at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
Mrs. Headlamp has finally persuaded me to put my hands in my pockets and take her and the Sidelights (4 kids - 3 teenagers & 1 7 year old) to New York City. Looks like we will be staying at the Pennsylvania Hotel :o and coming in mid-April.
So, a question to all who know NYC. Sure there are the tourist guides - but where can we see the real New York. Good places to visit, eat, hang out and hear some decent music? Also I will definitely want to check out some second hand vinyl whiile I'm there.
I'd also like to see Brooklyn & Coney Island when I'm there but haven't got a clue as to what/where's safe I just think doing the Empire State, Guggenheim, Macys hanging around Times Square for 2 or 3 days is like sitting in Leicester Square in London, going to Harrods and seeing Buckingham Palace it doesn't give you a true flavour of what London's all about.
Any suggestions, ideas will be gratefully received.
Thanks
R

Great suggestion Discoman .
Reserve tickets now for a David Letterman.... or better yet ..... a Saturday Nite Live or Conan O'Brian taping .
I am a big pizza devotee .... and without a doubt ..... one of my all-time favourites is John's Pizza in the Village ( still there?) ..... should be a winner with the kids .... the place ain't nothin' fancy .... but one time Rob Lowe was at a nearby table ....
The Staten Island ferry is cheap ... and a round trip ride is a great way to kick back and view the city.
I've never been to Ellis Island .... but on my next trip .... that's on my list .....

Thanks for the suggestions so far!! Keep 'em coming - I will want to spend an afternoon in a second hand record store - I know there's a big one in Brooklyn, but are there any others? The missus also wants to go to Harlem - not to gawp but to shop and eat 'soul food' - are we being naive Brits even thinking about it or is its reputation for being dangerous an urban myth?
Harlem has had the reputation of being a tough neighborhood and that reputation was not undeserved. I'd check it out and if all's well then I'd visit Harlem and try to catch a show or two at the Apollo Theater. :D

I know most of the record spots in Manhattan. I am in New York at least once a month. I am assuming you are looking for mostly 70's and 80's DISCO right? If that is the case it can be very time consuming. Definitely only for those who are interested in going through stacks and stacks of old records. Most shops do not open until after 12pm. How long are you going to be up there? You are going to need at least 1 day set aside just for record shopping.
Absolutely - mainly 70's, and yes going through stacks of vinyl is a real passion! We are going to New York for a week so (relatively) plenty of time to browse away - will probably time it so that the Missus goes to Woodbury and I can stay in Manhattan. :lol:Originally Written by Spellbound
Let me try to get the addresses of the decent vinyl shops so you will not waste your time at places not worth stepping into. Then you can go to Mapquest.com and plan your trip according the addresses. All are accessible by subway as far as Manhattan is concerned. The NYMTA should have a map of the entire subway system online. You should be able to get off at one station and have all of the shops within walking distance of each other. I usually walk everywhere and take the subway only if I am traveling from one borough to another.
go to "the thing" on 1001 manhattan ave in greenpoint, brooklyn.. off the greenpoint ave stop on the g train.all records are $2 and mostly 12"s... it is the best place to really dig.. and there is a ton of disco..it is getting more picked over, but there are like more than 100,000 records..
a1 or sound library if you want to spend money..
vinyl mania can be a good spot.. rock and soul or dance tracks for classics (bootlegged or maybe not)..academy in brooklyn can be ok as can bleeker bob's and kim's video... and gimme gimme can be ok, but you have to figure out when it is open..
If you are going to toss out store names to him like that at least be more specific as to where they are located. He has never been there before so all those store names mean nothing to him and will only confuse him. You are going to have him running all over the city. A city he is unfamiliar with that can be unsafe in certain areas especially for someone who has never been there before. If I remember correctly he would prefer not to leave Manhattan.
Give me a few days to gather store addresses together so you can go over to Mapquest and plan your trip in advance.
I really appreciate the efforts. Many thanks Spellbound & Speculator...I looked on Google maps and the Brooklyn record shop is just over the bridge!! We'll be staying at the Pennsylvania so not too far (I guess)....I imagine that NYC is a bit like London, you don't want to be walking down Coldharbour Lane in Brixton at 2am equally you wouldn't do the same in Harlem, but both are probably relatively safe during the day!
I'm looking forward to seeing this info as well Spellbound....I may be visiting NY for the first time myself at the end of March so this is very timely! :)Originally Written by Spellbound
