Can you post a clip of the track?
Maybe it's 'New York' by The Nuggets?
Disco Funk
I asked this question previously, but perhaps it got lost, buried in another thread. On the terrific Savarese mix set CDs from 12-31-78 now selling on disc is a track I've never heard before. Can anyone identify the "New York City" track with lead vocals by a singer sounding very much like Marlena Shaw? A chorus of male vocalists chant the title. I know there are at least two of us forum members wondering...

I also would like to know since I don't remember this song at all, many good tracks in this set some I never heard like "Boogie fund" by Solar Flare and others I didn't pay to much attention then like "Is there a place for me" Harold Melvin Blue notes with Teddy on the lead...
I have the five-disc Savarese set at home, and I love it very much! One song I'll also throw in is the starter, "Since You've Been Gone (I've Been So Lonely) (any guesses to the artist and actual song title?). This is a lovely song, although it can also work for a morning music set.
It's definitely not the Nuggets track. The vocalist sounds eerily like Esther Phillips of 'What A Diff'rence A Day Makes'. Perhaps that will help someone ID it.Originally Written by Mixmachine
Boogie Fund is a great track. I discovered it on Ebay a few years ago. I only bought it because it had philly production credits. It took me a while to get into because I found the vocalist weak sounding. But it's catchy. Too bad no LP from that group. 'Is There A Place For Me' is a pretty cool dance track from HM's 'Blacks & Blues' album, in case anyone wasn't familiar with it.

Could you post a sample of it as well? It might help with the IDingOriginally Written by Saint Trocadero

If you take another look at the Ebay listing for this set, you'll find a modified listing of the tracks courtesy of Barry Walters and Jerry Bonham! :D Track 2 on Disc 2 is "New York City Dream" by Black Diamond.
We think the first track on Disc 1 is "Since I've Been Gone" by Webster Lewis (from his 1976 "On The Town" album).
The track still unidentified is the "Dance Dance Dance" cut on Disc Five, Track 7.
wow, Thanks Keefelc, Black Diamond, I've haven't played this since I bought it in 1978 :o

Thanks for the ID. I didn't know Black Diamond before hearing it on this Savarese set. I wonder if the female vocalist is credited on the label? We hear similarities to Marlena Shaw, Esther Phillips, perhaps Laura Greene. If anyone with the 12" could check...
We owe all thanks to Barry and Jerry for unravelling the mysteries of the Savarese set! :D I'm just glad I was corresponding with Barry the other day and, by sheer luck, he happened to mention the set.
I too heard the similarities to, particularly, Esther Phillips! Mixmachine, have you been able to find your copy? Can you please let us know the vocal credits (if any are listed)?
I dug around the net for more info on Black Diamond and saw at least one release on the French Carrere label credited to Black Diamond featuring Tara Schaft. So I guess she's the vocalist.

Keefelc, unfortunately the LP (scanned above) doesn't have any info on the label or cover, if there is a 12" I don't remember either and I'm yet to sort through and alphabetize a crate full of imports in my warehouse, “New York City Dream” always sounded familiar to me (off the cd set) so since this LP is still in it's original wrap almost new may be I used a 12", who knows, although I don't recall either any local 'vibe' for this record and most likely didn't see to much local action with the glut of records coming out then.Originally Written by keefelc
This LP was produced by Luigi Ojival and this copy is out of Canada; but no mention of the vocalist.
The cuts in this LP (both sides) are mixed (edited) into the next and "What now my love" is another great cut off this lp, here she really sounds even more like Esther Phillips.

I got the Black Diamond record. The vocalist is not so good. She's french trying to either sing in english phonetically or just in broken english. The songs themselves (i.e. the backing tracks) are alright. It's a shame each side is only 11 minutes long! More like a 12" single than an LP.

Oh yes, I keep forgetting to ask. What is the quality like on these CDs? Are we talking about hi-fi stereo recordings? Scratchy vinyl? Other than the fact that they are mixed, hopefully by Savarese, are they worth the investment for an audiophile?
Disco Funk
I was going to post a long detailed review, but it should be sufficient to say that if you are looking for audiophile quality here then this set is not for you, on the other hand, for the equivalent price of a couple of drinks on a South Beach club you get to take a trip down Disco memory lane, in many ways this is not a perfect set, but I still enjoyed it.Originally Written by Disco Funk
Thanks a lot for that. I was surprised at how good sounding that Larry Levan CD at the Paradise Garage sounded, so I was hoping that the Savarese set would be of the same quality. But I guess the person holding the party, or even Savarese himself, didn't have good high end equipment for recording.

I still need to get that Levan mixed CD, last time I checked it was out of stock.Originally Written by Disco Funk
this sets are CDRs and as far as I can tell they were not processed for CD, the lack of track cues is my worse gripe, I'll play around later on with one and see if the sound can be improved, at least I know the 'hiss' can be removed and track's cue added.
