Name that 1976 (jukebox) tune :

    *****

Let's try some serious trivia here .........

Records use to get played alot in jukeboxes . Jukebox operators kept track of each record's # of performances .

For the year ----- 1976 ------ The Music Operators Of America announced their :

----- SOUL RECORD OF THE YEAR ON JUKEBOXES -----

    and :D :D :D ----- it was a disco tune !!! :D

Which one from 1976 got the most jukebox play ?? :-? ( hint : whatever first came to mind ...think again ... that's not it )

    ?????

Thinking wayyyyyy back to the jukebox we had in our high school cafetera, it's got to be one of these two:

    Love Rollercoaster - Ohio Players
    or
Play That Funky Music - Wild Cherry

...but Love Rollercoaster was out at the first of the year so I'm thinking that it would have got the most plays in 1976! (Man, did I get tired of hearing that song every day at lunch.... )

I think it whould have been Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry because of the double take on the lyric, back then people would have played it for the shock value !

How about "Best of my love" by the Emotions?
A second guess could be "Disco Lady" by Johnnie Taylor.

Welcome to the board famdam !! :D

"LADY MARMALADE" could be the correct answer ...... if we were naming the top jukebox soul song of 1975 ..... because that's when it came out ( I don't know if it is the right answer for 1975 either ... however  )

LADY MARMALADE was the # 40 disco song for 1975 :

    40) LADY MARMALADE - Labelle
    (Epic/ 1974) P: Allen R. Toussaint; W: Bob Crewe/ Kenny Nolan
Timing: 3:56; BPM: approx. 117 bpm
    Pop: #1 (1); R&B: #1 (1); Disc-o-la Fortune 500: #71 out of 500
    45: A) Lady Marmalade; B) Space Children
CD Availabilty: "Lady Marmalade: Best of Patti & Labelle"
    A= 77; B= 4; C= 61; D= 98; F= 13; Total points = 253
    13 weeks on the chart (12/7/74 - 3/1/75)/ 9 weeks in the Top 10/ Peak: #3 for 2 weeks

The above according to Marky's compilation charts .... which as a new member here you probably don't know about , but may want to :-? :D

These particular guesses are on the right track in a certain way:

    Rick Dees
    Wild Cherry
    Andy Gibb
    The rest of the Gibbs
    Abba

In fact, I'd say the Wild Cherry lyrics would make a very good clue ......
    ............."play that funky music _____ ___ "

    :-? ??? :-?

Im thinking those people are white artists!

Could it be David Bowie's Golden Years first released as a shortened single in November 1975 and then as the full-length song in 1976.

White boy eh? Well then it must be the Bee Gees You Should Be Dancing!

Just looking at number one Billboard pop songs around September of '76....
You Should Be Dancing topped the chart on September 4, Shake Your Booty topped it the next week followed by Play That Funky Music at the top for the next three weeks...then A Fifth of Beethoven and then Disco Duck!

    Such a glorious time....sigh...

I'm still leaning towards KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND. But another band has come to mind as a possibility AWB(AVERAGE WHITE BAND) PICK UP THE PIECES I know it cam out late 1975 so it could be possible it was the most played Jukebox song for 1976.

is the soul song that got the most play in the jukeboxes for the year 1976 according to those who kept track ..... !! :D

so .... while not as out there as Walter Murphy , ..... .... this particular tune by KC & Co. .... was not a likely immediate consideration ........
