I have an old catalog of dance mix tapes from a company I used to order from and there is a song on one tape called "Seaside Weekend" by Antenna. Is anyone familiar with this song? I've never heard of it.

I don't have the answer to your question, but I'm wondering what company's catlog you have.

I used to order mix tapes from a couple of different companies back in the '80s, which helped me get to know a lot of songs I would have never heard otherwise.

I have several tapes from a company called Techway, several from Elevator Music, and a lot of tapes made by a New York DJ named Jerry Armstrong. I think I probably discovered all of them through classified ads in The Advocate.

The catalog I have is from a company called Metro Mix. In their advertisement they used to have a picture of a bare chested dj and the caption "take the dj home tonight".

In fact the Dorothy Moore song "Just Another Broken Heart" is on one of those tapes.

I also ordered from Techway. The last few tapes I got from them were awful.

I've never heard of Elevator Music or Jerry Armstrong. I wonder if any of these companies are still in business?

I do have a couple of tapes from Metro Mix, but I was really disappointed with the quality; really bad mixes, as I recall.

The later tapes I got from Techway weren't so good either--some bad mixes there too--but their earlier tapes were really excellent. (Of course, 20 years later, the tapes themselves don't sound as good as they used to!)

I haven't seen any ads for Elevator Music in years; I assume they're out of business. As for Jerry, he died in 1992.

We actually became pretty friendly after I started buying his tapes regularly. He made several custom tapes for me and would even call and play new records over the phone for me! And he continued to be a DJ right up 'til the end; some of his last tapes had some really bad mixes because the neuropathy in his hands made it hard for him to control his turntables, but even with the bad mixes I still cherish the tapes.

    R.I.P, Jerry!

Jeff, do you remember which Metro Mix tapes you have?

I was sorry I never ordered the live Fire Island tapes. He used to do one almost every summer.

I'll have to check at home. I'm not even positive I still have them; I did some serious weeding out of my cassette collection last year.

It seems you've stumbled on to another piece of gorgeous sleaze, my friend. The song has the feel of Basia, but with a lighter touch. Ocean sounds, strong Brazilian Samba rhythms, airy female vocalist singing minimal lyrics, keyboards, soft guitars, all running over various degrees of reverb. Just enough to haunt, not annoy. If Boodikka or Jussi know this, I'm sure they would agree --- a touch of Lound Lizard heaven. This song, for me, was all about the early morning ATTITUDE, not the hard dance.

The 12", a French import, is on the Les Disques du Crepuscule label, # TWI 601. The year was 1985, it runs about five minutes (no time on label) and clocks around 92 - 94 BPM. The 'B' side has two, short pieces: "Naughty, Naughty", a ballad, and "Don't Think About It", a 'potential' dance song that I wouldn't have programmed.

Thanks for the info Nicky. As I mentioned, this dj used to do a live Fire Island tape every summer and this song sounds like the perfect summer cool down song.
