With summer finally coming to London for this weekend at last, it's time to trundle out the BBQ and put on those summer soulful ballads - especially those wonderful duets - for that perfect summery soulful atmosphere!!

What an old smoothie I am!!

Some of my favourite duets of all time are:

Jean Carn/Al Johnson - Back For More
Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway - You Are My Heaven
Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway - Where Is The Love
Roberta Flack/Peabo Bryson - Tonight, I Celebrate My Love
Patti LaBelle/Bobby Womack - Love Has Finally Come At Last
Altrinna Grayson/Bobby Womack - (No Matter How High I get) I’ll Still Be Looking Up To You
Tammi Terrell/Marvin Gaye - Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing

and my pick of the bunch....
Teena Marie/Rick James - Fire and Desire

Feeling in the mood for a R-E-L-A-X-E-D Friday night??

If it moves - funk it!!

Seriously, I have a whole list of these at home. "YES" I have made several tapes of nothing but male/female "duets".

How about me and Ricardo for "See You In Court." Ok, just keeping it entertaining.
Hey, what about Steve Harvey and Cedric The Entertainer doing "Secret Lovers" on "The Steve Harvey Show." Oh, you guys missed that one huh.
Let's go with Teddy Pendergrass and Stephanie Mills for feel the fire. Oh, oh, oh, what about Teena Marie and Rick James for the slow jam I've having a mental block remembering.
    Find them and destroy them!

A few years ago I made a tape of "Love Duets". Miss Livvy & Miss Sarah from work daily pulled photos of our clients for our submissions and I provided tapes for them to listen to as they worked (mostly 70's & 80's R&B/Dance stuff). One day Miss Livvy requested a "Love Duets" tape as a change of pace and suggested a few songs. Hmmm, interesting, I thought. I went home that evening and compiled a tape for them.

    "LOVE DUETS - THE BALLADS":

    Side A:

    1) ENDLESS LOVE - Diana Ross & Lionel Richie
    2) IF THIS WORLD WERE MINE - Luther Vandross & Cheryl Lynn
    3) TONIGHT I CELEBRATE MY LOVE - Roberta Flack & Peabo Bryson
    4) THE CLOSER I GET TO YOU - Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway
    5) WITH YOU I'M BORN AGAIN - Billy Preston & Syreeta
    6) YOU ARE EVERYTHING - Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye
    7) YOU'RE A SPECIAL PART OF ME - Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye
VERY SPECIAL - Debra & Ronnie Laws
    9) BABY COME TO ME - Patti Austin & James Ingram
    10) ALL I WANT IS FOREVER - Regina Belle & James "J.T." Taylor
    11) I JUST CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU - Michael Jackson & Siedah Garrett
    12) SET THE NIGHT TO MUSIC - Roberta Flack & Maxi Priest
    13) HOW DO YOU KEEP THE MUSIC PLAYING? - Patti Austin & James Ingram

    Side B:

    1) FEEL THE FIRE - Teddy Pendergrass & Stephanie Mills
    2) FIRE AND DESIRE - Rick James & Teena Marie
    3) IS IT STILL GOOD TO YA? - Ashford & Simpson
    4) EVERCHANGING TIMES - Aretha Franklin & Michael McDonald
    5) YOU DON'T BRING ME FLOWERS - Barbra Streisand & Neil Diamond
    6) TOO MUCH, TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE - Johnny Mathis & Deniece Williams
    7) ON MY OWN - Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald
LOVE IS - Vanessa Williams & Brian McKnight
    9) CAN'T WE FALL IN LOVE AGAIN - Phyllis Hyman & Michael Henderson
    10) STOP, LOOK & LISTEN (TO YOUR HEART) - Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye
    11) MAYBE - Roberta Flack & Peabo Bryson
    12) REUNITED - Peaches & Herb
    13) LOVE ALL THE HURT AWAY - Aretha Franklin & George Benson

If ya look at the titles carefully, you'll see it traces the evolution of a love affair through a breakup to a reunion. Awwww.

Note: The songs that seem like commercial pap were requests.
The songs you love were my ideas.

Oh, and there's more, but I can't find the list I made for another more upbeat companion tape. I'll have to keep looking.
    That's enough for now.

Nice subject. I think we should also do one for 'ballads' so not necessarily duets. I have a ton of favs in that category.

Most of my most favorite duets have been mentioned so sorry for the non-original doubles:

    - Marvin Gaye/Diana Ross - You are everything
    - Donna Allen/Howard Johnson - Perfect timing
    - Nicole McCloud/Timmy Thomas - NY eyes
    - Gregory Hines/Luther Vandross - There is nothing better than love (who else knows this song - it is beautiful!)
    - Patti Labelle/that singer from LTD - Love is fire, love is ice (HI Boodi!)
    - Peaches & Herb - Reunited
    - Patti Austin/James Ingram - Baby come to me
    - Patti Austin/Luther Vandross - I'm gonna miss you in the morning

OK - I can't hold it back - my alltime fav slow jam is "One hundred ways" by James Ingram. I used to sometimes fill in for Don The Dark Diva, an American DJ, who did a show called "Mellow moods" on WAPS in Amsterdam. And I loved to do those 2 hours of mellow music, and I have kept some of the play lists. One day this might become a separate topic...

Sadly Don died of aids - he was a wonderful (radio) personality.

Yes Paul, I forgot about "YDBMF" its a very pretty song. Do you know the name of the song Aretha Franklin and Michael McDonald sang together back in the 80's? It is also another favorite of mine.

    Delight,

The Aretha/Michael McDonald duet was "Ever Changing Times" (1992) which Burt Bacharach & Carole Bayer Sager produced and cowrote with Bill Conti.

Incidentally, the "Delight Has Spoken" post was a highlight of my week. _

Thanks guys for your wonderful suggestions! There were quite a few gems that I had forgotten …

    Hustlebaby:
You mentioned some really great duets there. How could I forget “Too much, too little, too late” and “You Don’t have To Be A Star”?

    NickNack:
I agree with you. Anything by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell is fantastic!! And I also forgot “Come To Me”. Another great one! And I am a great fan of Jerry Butler, too!

I have an obscure Eighties indie soul duet on US 7" with Jerry Butler. I will check it out for sure at home tonite - but it sure is a great duet!

    Robbie:
I loved your three love tunes “Your Love”, “Endless Love” and especially “Saturday Love”!! And as for Roberta Flack’s voice in “The Closer I Get To You” – she is almost singing like a nightingale! So pure!!

    Marky:
I enjoyed your list very much – especially “If This World Were Mine”
“is It Still Good To Ya”, “On My Own” and “Love All The Hurt Away”!
Your theme to the CD works very well, I think. Great idea!

    Maarten:
Glad you like the thread! That track by Timmy Thomas and Nicole McCloud is one of my favourites as well. I dig that one out quite often!! I’d definitely would like too hear some of those ballads playlists, you mentioned. Great idea for a new topic!!

    Superfly:
Despite having all your favourites already mentioned, glad you managed to squeeze in Dennis Edwards and Siedah Garret with Don't Look Any Further!!
    A truly great song!

    Thanks all!!!
