I purchased this; it arrived Saturday and listened to it yesterday. Some real gems on this that I didn't know, especially on the first disc. Tom seemed quite enchanted by the Romance LP cuz they seem to appear on every disk!!! Some of the mixes are quite off at the beginning (not quite "trainwreck--but noticeably "off") and then later in the 4th disc ("Souvenirs" comes to mind)....but still fascinating in his approach from very mellow tempos to gradually increasing to more and more high energy and then a cooldown at the end (that's the Troc way also)...and he played Patti Jo's incredible "Make Me Believe In You" almost at the very end...and closed with a lovely version of "Here Comes The Sun" by Nina Simone. That was perfect.

    And kidz it's CHEAP!!!! :D :D :D :D (ya knows I likes it CHEAP!!!)

I agree the mixes are a bit off. Most tapes that I've heard of 70's dj's don't have the smooth mixing style of today because of the live drummers on the old records.

I have never mixed records on a Thorens turntable (assuming that is what he was using) but I can imagine it would be very difficult especially with the records mentioned on the list. Drums slow down, then speed up again and go back and forth. Hell it would be very difficult to mix some of those records on a Technics turntable complete with slider pitch control so I can only imagin what it must be like with a non slider pitch turntable.

The track listing shows a DJ who either (a) didn't want to know too much about BPMs and styles or, (b) a DJ who deliberately tried to 'mix it up', just for the hell of it IMO. Nothing wrong with either, as this was just before Disco became ultra, ultra programmed.

I think it prooves, to some extent, that nearly all jocks were much of a muchness back then, in terms of ability and programming skills, even the famous ones.

If there were any DJs who did long (16 bars or more), smooth, accurate mixes before mid to late '79, then I've yet to hear them. It's very interesting to look at the old Disco tracks with an accurate real-time BPM counter. To maintain two tracks in sync, a variation of maybe .4 of a BPM is just about O.K. in the short term(depending on strength of on/off beats and more importantly, the hi-hat accents being used). Most older Disco 12" mixes can fluctuate by anything up to 3 or 4 BPM over an 8 bar segment, sometimes over the course of only 2 bars!!

When I first started mixing back in the seventies, I used Garard tuntables without any pitch controls. I didn't have a problem mixing without pitch control because I used my thumb to slow down the tempo; Also, as I mix today I did so then harmonically!

There seems to be a misconception that in the mid 70’s turntables with Pitch control were not available yet, the original Technics 1200 series was widely available, Radio and many early clubs used them, they were expensive but were considered the best by many club Djs even after the 1200 MKII servo lock control model first became available some time in the early 80’s, but as I remember by far the most widely used Club TT in the mid to late 70’s was the second generation of 1200’s (the one in the right) which although still expensive was now more affordable, this 1200 model disappeared for a couple of years ( and became very expensive and scarce) but other inferior models with pitch control substituted until the MKII returned in the early 80’s.

If by ’78 Studio 54 was not using TT with pitch, I don’t know why, all I can say is that by ’78 beat mixing was done all over , all Miami clubs I visited and worked at had TT with pitch, I still own two Marantz 6300 I got back in ’77, this model has Pitch controls and I used them for DJing for years.

actually many of us didn't like the MKII when they first came out, and prefered the old knobs, some other TT made by Technics had a wheel in front for the pitch control, talk about pain in the butt

A Pic of Lou Divito in Chicago, shows he's playing "Boogie Boggie Oogie" so that makes it 1978 at least, he's using the original 1200, 8) cool,

Hey Quinny look what he's doing with his fingers to control the pitch... I guess I wasn't the only one employing this technique at the time as you think

I agree. Pitch control TT were definitely available in the mid 70s and most of the professional NYC deejays that I remember had them. However these were club deejays mixing live at parties. The concept of selling mixed compilations came pretty much after disco had died out.

    Missing Track -Found ??

Hi Guys, Not having heard the CD's...(although I would like to purchase them)
    Could the missing track be

Dance Dance Dance by Charlie Challels ??? on Ariola

It is listed in The 'Top LA audience response records' charts in January, and February 1976 - and ONLY seems to have appeared in these charts (Why ONLY LA ??) (Mission for MARKEEEEY!!)

If anyon'e got this track maybe they could comment on the sound, and hopefully we can nail this particular issue ??

See further up in the thread. The song was ID'd as 'I Love To See You Dance' by Finished Touch, a motown release if I recall correctly. Sounds like James Gadson on drums.

AFAIK Jim Burgess was doing flawless long mixes prior to 79. Ive only heard tapes of him from the 80s but in one he does an overlay of the whole of Tavares - dont take away the music over 'Make that feeling come again', both of which are pre 79. That said Burgess was an exceptionally skilled mixer

    Dear Friends:

I wanted to thank you all for the good words along the way here. It's such a long time ago and I don't even know what was on that tape that everybody is talking about. But I do appreciate being remembered.

And that Sylvester track that appears to be different is different but I don't really remember where I got that one from. I am sure that it was unreleased ... something I may have gotten before it hit the market.

    Sincerely,

    Tom Savarese :icon_razz:
