I use "nonwoven" material. It's a kind of soft "synthetic paper" . It leaves no residues and is quite cheap. (Sometimes sold as cloths to wax cars etc. but also in bigger packings for industrial cleaning purposes)
Is there a certain type of cloth that could be brought from a fabric store by the length that could be used to clean records?

I just go ahead and wash the things (if they are dirty when I get them) in the bathtub with soap and water. I quickly dry them off w/ a towel before the label gets screwed up.
believe it or not, I actually get a lot of records out of the dumpster behind the thrift shop. These thrift shops throw away a lot of good stuff!
