    *****

In 1977, The New Marketts did a disco version of the theme to the wild TV soap opera .... Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman 8)

The writer's credit of this tune is : B. WHITE

Now I know of only one B. White .. .... is it him ??? :-?

    *****

Hmmmm..... as I think of the swirling strings that start off the intro .... I'm willling to bet it is ...... 8) 8) 8) 8)

Found this on the site www.classicthemes.com

[not to be confused with the composer of the pop disco anthem,
"Love's Theme", Barry White was the pseudonym of a British
composer who wrote for production music libraries; his piece
was undoubtedly chosen to play up the parody, since it was
a typically lush pseudo-sophisticated library string THEME]

    Composer: "Barry White"
[pseudonym of Robert Charles Kingston] (ASCAP)

There is a different version on West End by "Sounds of inner city", produced, arranged and conducted by Vince Montana.

I never heard the original TV show's theme song. Was the Sounds of the Inner City version based on the same melody, or was it an original? I really enjoy their Mary Hartman Mary Hartman cut. It's essentially the Salsoul Orchestra, but under a different name. The vocal version is strangely very short (3 min) versus the instrumental's 6 minutes.

There is also a 9-minute version (with vocal) on that excellent French series, Soul Collector Vol. 3. But I didn't know it was the Salsoul Orchestra "in disguise"!

Here's a link to the amazon.fr listing with audio samples:

    http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/

Great selection of tracks. I might get it just for the Mary Hartman cut.

Vol.2 has a 14 minute plus version of Love Is The Message(!!) - I just listened to the audio sample, and some guy did a remix of LITM by looping sections of it. Definitely sounds 'artificial'.

The Salsoul Orchestra made some of the absolute worst Disco records, didn't they? This being a prime example. It's also a very good example of a record being made for a 'home' market that doesn't have any relevance in others. Back in '77, we wouldn't have had any chance of knowing what it referred to, or of seeing the TV show on our own sets?

Tracks like this are one reason why I have a love/hate relationship with Salsoul Records and don't rate their output as highly as some. Souinds like the guys were in bored to death, automatic mode when they played on it.

I don't like everything that they put out, but I enjoy the Mary Hartman track, and I was too young to watch the show when it was on. The lounge-singerish vocals are cheese, but the instrumentation (i.e. instrumental version) is great. At least I enjoy it. Too each one's own, I suppose. :)

Well, this was a fun number for those that enjoy the more "Disco" sound of the day, not *only* the more "funky " end of Disco, the instrumental was the popular side, although I don't recall any clubs playing this one.

This "Theme" song was very popular in the USA as I have a *third* disco version of the theme performed by "The Deadly Nightshade" on Phantom records ('76) very different from Salsoul's.

AFAIK musicians made music for the local (US) market first, if it spilled over and found an audience abroad , better.

Do you think Manu Dibango wrote Macussa for the USA market?

Do you think that the funksters of America were thinking of the UK funk scene when they sat down to write a song?

By The Deadly Nightshade 3:43 on Phantom records 8)

Swerzer .... in the middle of the 45 .... there is a brief drum break where a female with a sort of New York accent calls out " Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman " sounding more like Lily Tomlin doing her telephone operator than the more expressive actual "MARY HAAAAARTMAN " TV version .
This is the only vocal in this scaled down 2:56 version ...

I have the 12 " with the longer version , .... but it is sealed  ...

Parts of "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" remind me of Salsoul Orchestra's "Chicago Bus Stop." It's too bad the vocalist sounds a bit like Robert Goulet, but then that kind of voice rather suits the lyrics!

I'm listening to THE NEW MARKETTS entire album ..... I'm enjoying it ! Instrumentals .....centered around organ and guitar both electric and accoustic .....unknown names to me .... not your usual disco suspects here ... out of Hollywood ....but distributed out of ....Sherman Oaks !!! :-o This album includes a much more subtle disco version than the more famous one of The Twilight Zone Theme , here called OUT OF LIMITS

Quinny : The Salsoul Orchestra made some of the absolute worst Disco records, didn't they?
..... isn't not liking :-o:-o:-o The Salsoul Orchestra akin to not liking The Sound Of Philadelphia ....since that's where it came from with musicians interchanging between the two ????

Boy Quinny .... at this rate , you're soon going to be down to about four or five records of preference !!!!! :-o

Some songs coming from PIR are also very mechanical, repetitive and formulaic.

On the same volume there is a 5:58 mix of «Happy people» by the Temptations (the lp vocal and instrumental versions pasted together).

I recently found a vinyl copy of this, or at least it has the 14 min time listed on the cover , it says Edits by the "cuco" on Rated X records looks like a boot to me, also found an almost identical one by 'Special edits by Mr K' (kavorkian?) they are kind of interesting but after awhile they get tired.:-? Stick to the original 8)

Love Is The Message is another record that makes me wanna wretch and doesn't it sound remarkably similar to the Three Degrees Take Good Care Of Yourself in places? That was another record that left me feeling 99.99999% less than exhuberant. Philly had some of the absolute crassest records.

"mr. k" is danny krivit. his edit of LITM is the good version, not all cheesy and blah like the original, a more funky workout with keys edited in from a fela kuti track (maybe "water mek no enemy"? i cant remember!). its definitely the best version of the track, by far.

and how can someone not like philly international? "only the strong survive", "don't leave me this way", "was that all it was", "aint no stoppin us now", "bad luck", "the love i lost", etc. its definitely one of my favorite labels for disco.

This is definitely not the same track that Sounds of The Inner City recorded, but it's just as nice!

Re: Mary Hartman .... Mary Haaartman !!

thanks, DiscoFunk !!! I have the Sounds of Inner City version of the theme as well as the Deadly Nightshade version. Am lacking the New Marketts version

Nevertheless, for those of you who didn't get a chance to see this syndicated super-silly soap spoof back in '76 .....the first 25 episodes were released on DVD not too long ago (and after the majority of posts on this thread were originally written).

(btw, If I admit I own the Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman Board game .....does that make me super-scary ???:icon_biggrin:)

I have to give the nod to Vince Montana's full-bodied Philly interpretation
