Ralph Carter "When You're Young And In Love"

Hey guys I'm new here. I have been on forums only for a couple of months and I am still surprised at how many thing there are to learn. Disco music has always been my favorite type of music even though 80s and Italo Disco is what I have grown up with and will forever hold a special place in my heart.
There is not other kind of music that makes me feel the way I do when I listen to Disco.
The reason I am here is because 3 days ago I finally watched the movie "Broadway Damage" which I had bought alone because the trailer has as background music this superb disco track by Voyage "Souvenirs", which I still ask myself how I was able to find out what it was since it's not credited in the end credits. Anyway, after the movie is over, lo and behold this ab fab Disco track begins and I'm up and dancing like a madman because I also recognize it's a remake of the track I know from The Marvelettes (Motown) "When You're Young And In Love". Not only was I surprised at how fantastic it all went along, but also at how marvelous the Disco base was. OMK it was ages I was not to f positively surprised!!! I paused and rewinded (lol) the dvd to check who sang this masterpiece and only after I found the 7" on ebay did I read and realise why the name Ralph Carter was not new to me, he's the boy in the 70s tv show Good Times. Anyway, I foresee a whole lot of my salaries will go to ebay etc now that I have found this bottomless pit of info-forum and will discover all new disco tracks that are obscure to me.
    Ciao guys!!

Wow thanks Marky!! While I'm here, can I ask if someone can direct me to (if there is one) a really great disco collection series that includes obscure tracks like these/those who never turn up on disco compilations that always carry the same tunes? I'd love to have somewhere to continue my collection, and even though I dont0 like compilations I admit in this case it's a good idea. This Best Disco In The Universe is all out of print at the moment :(

There's a series called 'Best Disco In Town' by Hot Productions, and Volume 2 has the 4 minute version of the track.

If you like that track, he did a whole album 'Young and In Love', which included his other hit 'Extra Extra'.

We can't forget this ...... when Marky rocked the disco world with this seemingly unlikely chart topper :o ....... "EXTRA, EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT" ......Ralph Carter's followup to : " WHEN YOU'RE YOUND AND IN LOVE "

Many fully expected the classic smash "MIGHTY HIGH " ..... by the Mighty Clouds Of Joy to dominate the top for weeks , when this surprise spoiler blocked that from happening .

The bombshell chart as it appeared :

THE DISCO COMPILATION CONSENSUS TOP 40 + 3

    Chart #66 (volume 2/ #4): January 24, 1976

    ***********************************

    1) EXTRA, EXTRA (Read All About It)- Ralph Carter
    (Mercury 45 disco version (retail)/ DJ only 12" promo (clubplay)/ (60 points/ charts ABCDEF)

    8 weeks on the chart/ Last week: #1 (2nd week @ #1) (+/-0)

    ***********************************

    2) MIGHTY HIGH - Mighty Clouds of Joy
    (ABC LP) (56 total points/ charts A_CDEF)
    8 weeks on the chart/ 1 week @ #1/ Last week: #4 (+2)

    3) THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC - The Softones
    (Avco 45) (55 points/ ABCD_F)
    6 weeks on the chart/ Last week: #6) (+3)

    4) SPANISH HUSTLE - The Fatback Band
(Event LP (retail)/12" promo) (45 total points/ charts ABCD__)
    4 weeks on the chart/ Last week: #5 (+1)

    5) "THE SALSOUL ORCHESTRA" LP (All Cuts) - The Salsoul Orchestra
LP tracks: 1) SALSOUL HUSTLE; 2) GET HAPPY; 3) CHICAGO BUS STOP; 4) YOU'RE JUST THE RIGHT SIZE; 5) TANGERINE; 6) TALE OF THREE CITIES; 7) SALSOUL RAINBOW and 8. LOVE LETTERS
    (Salsoul LP) (40 total points/ charts ABC_EF)
    12 weeks on the chart/3 non-consecutive weeks @ #1)/ Lastr week: #12 (+7)

..... ( it bears noting that this song's amazing chart performance occurred during a particularly dark period for the compilation charts ..... when there was the quickly hushed payola inquiry scandal  ..... )

Ah remicks, the proof is in tha puddin' ...placement on 6 charts nearly always trumps placement on 5 charts!! Granted, "MIGHTY HIGH" was screwed by the Billboard charts, it should been #1 for at least 4 or 5 weeks, IMHO. But one chart or another kept not charting it...so it lost out to lesser competition like "EXTRA, EXTRA" & "SPANISH HUSTLE". I only report the facts. :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

It's worth noticing something else within the fine print of Marky's charts:

    17) WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG AND IN LOVE - Ralph Carter
    (Mercury/ 1975) P: Reid Whitelaw/Norman Bergen; W: Van McCoy; "A Tom Moulton Mix"
Timing: 2:30 (45); 5:04 (disco version); BPM: approx. 127 bpm
    Pop: #95; R&B: #37; Disc-o-la Fortune 500: #263 out of 500
45: A) When You're Young and In Love; B) (disco version)
    *COVER: originally a hit for:
    Ruby & The Romantics (#48 R&B in 1964)
    The Marvelettes (#23 Pop/ #9 R&B in 1967)
    The Choice Four (#91 Pop/ #45 R&B in 1975) ( this version produced by Van McCoy )
later charted by Stacy Lattisaw (#91 R&B in 1979)
Disco superstar Van McCoy wrote this Number One Disco Tune over ten years earlier ..... way back in 1964 !! 8)

Guess he never could have dreamed this would some day become a huge dance tune . .. and hit #1 . Even in 1975 , during the disco era, Van produced an updated version by The Choice Four as a .... ballad .

I bet when Ralph Carter's version came out just months later Van must have thought
    " Doh! Why didn't I think of that !! " :P

McCoy actually had a habit of re-recording the same song with different artists. Choice Four recorded Walk Away From Love, which McCoy then turned around and made a big hit with David Ruffin. So he could have easily done an uptempo version of When You're Young And In Love. Maybe he thought artistically it sounded better as a ballad?

I have the CD greatest hits for The Choice Four, which has both tracks. Here's allmusicguide's description, which has the audio samples for the two cuts:
